This document I hope will give people an understanding of my equipment and software that I have installed on the PC. The Operating System (OS) is primarily Linux Mint but also Windows XP. I still use W XP as I do not need to "upgrade" to later versions of Windows OS as Linux does all that I need to do cinematographer work.

OpenShot $0.00 OpenSourceSoftware Is a Linux editor, simpler for beginners. Imports and exports many different file formats. Writes to DVD ?????????????

MAGIX ~ $80.00 Is a Windows editor which I use on W XP suitable for intermediate people. Imports and exports a limited amount of different file formats, some CODECS can be obtained, some at a cost.

IskySoft ~ $50.00. Is a Windows editor suitable for beginners. Imports and exports many different file formats. Writes to DVD disc.

Movie players

VLC $0.00 OpenSourceSoftware Is a Linux and Windows application. It's considered the best and is a must to have installed. Has a lot of features, can capture from an analogue device, VHS recorder, DV Camcorder etc.

Video player $.0.00 OpenSourceSoftware A Linux application which is a part of the OS, is a simpler viewer than VLC.

XP Media Viewer Is part of Windows XP, basic viewer so one should install VLC.

Converters

WinFF $0.00 OpenSourceSoftware Is a Linux application. A very basic converter.

Handbrake $0.00 OpenSourceSoftware Is available for Apple, Windows and Linux systems. I use mostly just to crop out sub-titles and change the aspect ratio of a video. Of course the Video editors above can do this job. Has many other uses. wwww www wwwww

AnyVideoConverter $0.00. OpenSourceSoftware Is available for Windows and Linux systems. Converts video, still images and sound. Similar application as FormatFactory but a few times when converting a file has failed, as mentioned above, AVC does the job.

Audacity $0.00. OpenSourceSoftware Is available for Windows and Linux systems. A must have application to edit sound. Has about a hundred features so does a super job. Of course sound can be edited by video editors but not as good as Audacity.

Screen Recorders

SimpleScreenRecorder $0.00. OpenSourceSoftware Is a Linux application. Anything that can be viewed on a PC VDU (screen) can be captured.

CamStudio $0.00 Is a Windows application Anything that can be viewed on a PC VDU (screen) can be captured. But CamStudio has the great feature in that it's used to make instructional videos. One uses it to use/run an application and with voice narration to show how an application is used.

Check video and sound

MediaInfo $0.00. OpenSourceSoftware Is used to check a video file for much information if one is having problems with a video clip.

GSPot $0.00. OpenSourceSoftware Is used as MediaInfo but shows a lot more information about a video file.

VideoInspector $0.00. OpenSourceSoftware A Windows application which does a small job.

Image editing

The GIMP $0.00. OpenSourceSoftware Another must have is a Linux and Windows application. To edit still images only. It is on par with $xxx Windows applications. Video editors can do a small job.

Other software used to make paper work, brochures and so on.

Scribus $0.00. OpenSourceSoftware This is a DeskTopPublisher (DTP) which one uses to produce paper with artwork such as; Birthday cards, advertising pamphlets. I use it to make my DVD case inserts.

LibreOffice $0.00. OpenSourceSoftware Printing of instruction booklets and other items similar to Scribus.
