A Reversal in Perspective
INTRODUCTION A Reversal in Perspective A strange debate has been raging in Western democracies in recent years, one that raises a number of interrelated questions. Is the Shoah a unique event in the history of humanity, or is it just one out of the many genocides marking the bloody history of the twentieth century? Is this catastrophe to be understood in the sole light of the singular experience of the Jewish condition or in that of the universal experience of contemporary politics? What about the Armenians, the Gypsies, the Cambodians, and the Rwan- dans? Were they not struck by the same tragedy as the Jews? How much importance is to be given to the Jewish dimension of the genocide and how much to its universal thrust? In this debate, at fi rst sight academic, it is the assumption of the “singularity of the Shoah” that is on the hot seat. There are those who see the Shoah as an utterly unique event with the Jews at its center and consider comparisons to any other event a sacrilege. This thesis has been stated over and over again in the English-speaking world.1 Among its advo- cates are Elie Wiesel, who regards the Holocaust as “the ultimate event, the ultimate mystery, never to be comprehended or transmitted”;2 Georges Steiner, who locates the “qualitative differences between the Shoah and innumerable other examples of mass murder” in the “symbolic and meta- physical-theological realm”;3 Claude Lanzmann, who refers to the “obscene effrontery” of those who “deny the specifi city of the Holocaust and its impi- ous character by diluting or burying an exorbitant crime, of another nature altogether, in a question of universal evil”;4 and Paul Ricœur, for whom the Shoah is a “uniquely unique event” and its victims “delegates to our memory of all the victims of history.”5 All of the theologies of the Shoah that see a divine mystery in it subscribe to this viewpoint. -

The lineup consisted of six all-women punk and new wave bands (the Nixe, the Pin-offs, Pink Plastic & Panties,i the Removers, the Softies and the Broads) playing for a mixed gender audience. Similar to the Ladyfests two decades later, the main goal was to counteract the gender disparity of musical production (Aragon 77; Leonard, Gender 169). The organizers argued that: popular music is a men’s world as most music managers, industry executives and band members are male. Women are mainly relegated to the roles of singer or eye candy. However, women’s emancipation has also affected popular music as demonstrated by an increasing number of all-women bands playing excellent music. To showcase and support such bands we organized the Rock tegen de Rollen festival. -
Jews, Masculinity, and Political Violence in Interwar France
Jews, Masculinity, and Political Violence in Interwar France Richard Sonn University of Arkansas On a clear, beautiful day in the center of the city of Paris I performed the first act in front of the entire world. 1 Scholom Schwartzbard, letter from La Santé Prison In this letter to a left-wing Yiddish-language newspaper, Schwartzbard explained why, on 25 May 1926, he killed the former Hetman of the Ukraine, Simon Vasilievich Petliura. From 1919 to 1921, Petliura had led the Ukrainian National Republic, which had briefly been allied with the anti-communist Polish forces until the victorious Red Army pushed both out. Schwartzbard was a Jewish anarchist who blamed Petliura for causing, or at least not hindering, attacks on Ukrainian Jews in 1919 and 1920 that resulted in the deaths of between 50,000 and 150,000 people, including fifteen members of Schwartzbard's own family. He was tried in October 1927, in a highly publicized court case that earned the sobriquet "the trial of the pogroms" (le procès des pogroms). The Petliura assassination and Schwartzbard's trial highlight the massive immigration into France of central and eastern European Jews, the majority of working-class 1 Henry Torrès, Le Procès des pogromes (Paris: Editions de France, 1928), 255-7, trans. and quoted in Felix and Miyoko Imonti, Violent Justice: How Three Assassins Fought to Free Europe's Jews (Amherst, MA: Prometheus, 1994), 87. 392 Jews, Masculinity, and Political Violence 393 background, between 1919 and 1939. The "trial of the pogroms" focused attention on violence against Jews and, in Schwartzbard's case, recourse to violence as resistance. -
Professionalization of Green Parties?
Professionalization of Green parties? Analyzing and explaining changes in the external political approach of the Dutch political party GroenLinks Lotte Melenhorst (0712019) Supervisor: Dr. A. S. Zaslove 5 September 2012 Abstract There is a relatively small body of research regarding the ideological and organizational changes of Green parties. What has been lacking so far is an analysis of the way Green parties present them- selves to the outside world, which is especially interesting because it can be expected to strongly influence the image of these parties. The project shows that the Dutch Green party ‘GroenLinks’ has become more professional regarding their ‘external political approach’ – regarding ideological, or- ganizational as well as strategic presentation – during their 20 years of existence. This research pro- ject challenges the core idea of the so-called ‘threshold-approach’, that major organizational changes appear when a party is getting into government. What turns out to be at least as interesting is the ‘anticipatory’ adaptations parties go through once they have formulated government participation as an important party goal. Until now, scholars have felt that Green parties are transforming, but they have not been able to point at the core of the changes that have taken place. Organizational and ideological changes have been investigated separately, whereas in the case of Green parties organi- zation and ideology are closely interrelated. In this thesis it is argued that the external political ap- proach of GroenLinks, which used to be a typical New Left Green party but that lacks governmental experience, has become more professional, due to initiatives of various within-party actors who of- ten responded to developments outside the party. -

(Pindar) Water. There's too much of it, or too little. It's too salty, or too sweet. It wells up from the ground, carves itself a way through the land, and then it's called a river or a stream. It descends from the heavens in a variety of forms - as dew or hail, to mention just the extremes. And then, of course, there is the all-encompassing water which we call the sea, and which reminds us of the beginning of all things. The English once labelled the Netherlands across the North Sea ‘this indigested vomit of the sea’. But the Dutch went to work on that vomit, systematically and stubbornly: ‘... their tireless hands manufactured this land, / drained it and trained it and planed it and planned’ (James Brockway). As God's subcontractors they gradually became experts in living apart together. Look carefully at the first photo. The water has struck again. We're talking 1926. Gelderland. The small, stocky woman visiting the stricken province is Queen Wilhelmina. Without turning a hair she allows herself to be carried over the waters. -

2018 Geograph Autumn Vol 103 Party 3 AN INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL • 125 years of the Geographical Association • Twenty-five years of progress in physical geography • Geographies of mobility • Local practices in Fairtrade’s global system Geography Vol 103 Part 3 Autumn 2018 © Geography 2018 Geography Editorial Policy and Vision Geography is the Geographical Association’s flagship journal and reflects the thriving and dynamic nature of the discipline. The journal serves the ‘disciplinary community’ including academics working in geography departments in higher education institutions across the globe together with specialist teachers of the subject in schools, academies and colleges. Our role is to help ‘recontextualise’ the discipline for educational purposes. To do this, we enable readers to keep in touch with the discipline, which can be challenging but also immensely rewarding. Likewise, it is beneficial for university academics to keep in touch with the school subject and its changing educational context. Geography contributes to this process by stimulating dialogue and debate about the essential character and contribution of geography in the UK and internationally. The journal spans the breadth of human and physical geography and encourages debate about curriculum development and other pedagogical issues. The Editorial Collective welcomes articles that: • provide scholarly summaries and interpretations of current research and debates about particular aspects of geography, geography as a whole or geographical education • explore the implications -
