I love how these wonderful cartoon strips have been reprinted as single episodes, enlarged slightly and coloured. They are so beautiful to look through, I hope they reprint all of them like this. In this adventure Little My finds a box of tropical seeds. Moominmamma plants them and the hot weather really encourages their growth. There are some wonderful moments in this book, I love Tove's sense of humour, the tigers and snake were so funny. This is a really fun, creative story, best read in a ham I love how these wonderful cartoon strips have been reprinted as single episodes, enlarged slightly and coloured. This is a good book, I feel. The art is wholesome and delightfully storybook styled, and the Moomins reminds me of something I might see in Bone. If nothing else! I love the Moomins so much and yet somehow this is the first time I've ever read any of the comics. And it's darling, but I think I prefer the prose. Words convey the gentleness and good feelings moreso than the drawings with the exception of Moominvalley Turns Jungle, who is ever calm and welcoming regardless of situation. I read these in different versions when I was in grade school, which, Moominvalley Turns Jungle back, seems peculiar to me now that I am reading them again. Moominvalley Turns Jungle are full of weird asides and very peculiar in all ways, and I am certain kid me missed bunches of stuff. Adult me thinks they're still maybe a bit juvenile, but they are lovely to look at, and clever enough, and I liked going back to this particular well. Moominvalley Turns Jungle - Quimby's Tove Jansson was a reputed novelist, illustrator, painter, visual artist, comic strip writer, and author from Finland, who used to speak and write in Swedish. Jansson had started this widely successful series in Moominvalley Turns Jungle published its last book in Jansson was highly influenced by her artistic parents while she was growing up. Between andshe studied in Helsinki, Paris, and Stockholm. InJansson organized her first independent art exhibition. At around the same time, she was also writing articles and short stories for several publications. Jansson was also involved in creating graphics for the covers of books and other purposes. After gaining early exposure to the professions of writing and art, Jansson continued doing them for as long as she lived. The first three books of her Moomin series achieved tremendous success in worldwide sales. During the s, she made trips to several European countries and drew from her experience to write short stories, articles, and illustrations. These works of Jansson were published in several periodicals, magazines, and daily papers at that time. Jansson also worked on Moominvalley Turns Jungle adverts, postcards, and book covers. For a short duration, Jansson was engaged to Atos Wirtanen. While studying for her later Moominvalley Turns Jungle, she had come across her future partner named Tuulikki Pietila, with whom she collaborated on numerous projects and Moominvalley Turns Jungle later. The two women are credited to have built the Moominhouse model, which is now preserved at the Moomin museum located in Tampere. Following the release of her last Moomin book, Jansson stopped writing that series and began writing for the adult readers. Her most popular adult fiction is The Summer Book. This novel is described as a work of simplicity, subtlety, and charm, and describes the experience of a young girl of staying on an island with her grandmother. Besides writing novels, Jansson has enjoyed her careers as a cartoonist and illustrator as well. She worked for a Swedish satirical magazine called Garm from the s until Jansson continued to draw political cartoons throughout World War II, often mocking Joseph Stalin and Hitler through her creative work.

She was a visual artist and writer. The first Moomin books deal with the threat of apocalypse. The 1946 book about the comet approaching the Earth is interesting because of the changes Jansson made in the later versions (1956 and 1968). The first edition is shown to reflect the fear of possible Soviet occupation of Finland after World War II. In the last, 1968 edition this was replaced by a fear of a global nuclear war. In her illustrations and texts, Jansson drew inspiration from several scientific sources, many of which are identified in the article. The case of a meteorite falling in Finland in 1899 is also discussed. In particular, the thesis puts focus on an analysis and interpretation of the frescoes as heterotopias in public spaces, using the theoretical framework designed by Michel Foucault in Of Other Spaces (1984). Jansson’s frescoes are then compared with the norm in the tradition of public art in the Nordic countries Norway and Finland, in the post-war period in the 1940s and early 1950s. The Norwegian artist Per Krohg’s monumental fresco painting The City and its Countryside (1940-1949/ 1950) functions as an example on the norm. The first part of this dissertation presents a formal study of both Jansson’s and Krohg’s frescoes, followed by a formal and motive comparison between the two artworks. The second part focuses on the concept of utopia, and on the concept of heterotopia as described by Foucault; furthermore, this part is followed by an analysis of the two artists’ works in the context to the post-war period in Finland and Norway.

    ABSTRAKT JYVÄSKYLÄ UNIVERSITET HUMANISTISKA FAKULTETEN Svenska språket, Institutionen för språk Författare Miia Rissanen Titel Samhällsbilden i muminböcker Ämne svenska språket Typ av avhandling pro gradu Årtal 2006 Sidoantal 50 Referat Syftet med föreliggande avhandling är för det första att kartlägga de egenskaper som de två samhällena – muminsamhället och det finska samhället har gemensamma. För det andra skall jag analysera de sex muminböckerna och visa att muminsamhället avviker på många sätt från det samhälle vi är mycket vana vid. För det tredje vill jag presentera en helhetsbild om muminböckerna i allmänhet. Jag inriktar mig huvudsakligen på tolkningen av de sex muminböcker jag har valt för analysen. Materialet för dessa analys utgörs av muminböckerna: Mumintrollet och den stora översvämningen, Kometen kommer, Farlig midsommar, Trollvinter, Pappan och havet och Sent i november. Metoden bygger på närläsning och förtrogenhet med materialet. Jag valde att låta böckerna tala för sig själva och via dem spåra en linje om livet i Mumindalen. Jag har tolkat muminböckerna och de olika figurernas livshållningar mot bakgrunden av min egen erfarenhet av både verkligheten och samhället. I denna avhandling har jag analyserat det mänskliga i muminsamhället och hur figurernas liv i det paradisiska Mumindalen skiljer från vårt mänskliga samhälle. Varje figur i Mumindalen har sina mänskliga särdrag trots att böckerna innehåller flera element från det sagolika. Tove Janssons muminvärld lyckas bibehålla balansen mellan trygghet och skräck, något
