  • The Health of Freshwater Fish Communities in Tasman District
State of the Environment Report The Health of Freshwater Fish Communities in Tasman District 2011 State of the Environment Report The Health of Freshwater Fish Communities in Tasman District September 2011 This report presents results of an investigation of the abundance and diversity into freshwater fish and large invertebrates in Tasman District conducted from October 2006-March 2010. Streams sampled were from Golden Bay to Tasman Bay, mostly within 20km of the coast, generally small (1st-3rd order), with varying types and degrees of habitat modification. The upper Buller catchment waterways were investigated in the summer 2010. Comparison of diversity and abundance of fish with respect to control-impact pairs of sites on some of the same water bodies is provided. The thesis may not be reproduced elsewhere without the permission of the Author. Breeding Systems and Rarity in New Zealand Myosotis A thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy In Ecology at Massey University, Palmerston North New Zealand. Andrea Mary Brandon 2001 Abstract Rarity in New Zealand My osotis was explored at several different levels for this thesis. Within the genus, there are many rare species, encompassing several different types of rarity, and many of these are considered threatened in some way. In addition, the genus contains species that exhibit a wide array of floral fo rms, each of which can be associated with a distinct form of rarity. The reproductive biology of selected Nelson taxa was investigated in several specIes covering a range of floral morphologies, including the previously unstudied brush blossom floral syndrome. Species were found to fall into one of two mating types based on the degree of herkogamyl exhibited by the flowers. Species with flowers that are herkogamous throughout their life, require polIinators to set seed while those that are not herkogamous at some stage during anther dehiscence, are self-fertile and able to self pollinate autonomously. All species studied were self-compatible. Considerable variation in seed production was observed under natural conditions for those species that required pollinators to set seed. For these pollinator-requiring species, local population density had strong effects on seed set, while population size had no effect.

  • Opportunities for Ecological Restoration in the Takaka Catchment
OPPORTUNITES FOR ECOLOGICAL RESTORATION IN THE TAKAKA CATCHMENT Philip Simpson Uruwhenua Botanicals Pohara March, 2008 Ko Philip Simpson taku ingoa Ko Takaka te awa Ko Pikikiruna te maunga Ko Te Tai Mohua te moana Ko Ara o te Pohara taku turangawaewae Takaka is the river Takaka Hill is the mountain Golden Bay is the sea Pohara Valley is where I stand VISION: To match the remarkable living environment of the Takaka catchment with ecological health, restored and maintained by community action. Cover: Robin Slow, "Nga manu o Mohua" He Writes "[Manu] were kaitiaki, guardians of places; they flew across the sky as comets brightening the sky, they haunted the dark places expressing warnings and danger, and they sang." The birds reflect ecological health. Who has seen a young kereru lately? The name “Golden Bay” is popularly thought to reflect the discovery of gold in the 1850’s. However, the Maori name for the district is “Mohua”, the name for the yellowhead or “bush canary”, and the bay itself is “Te tai mohua”. A distinctly yellow after-glow is a feature of most clear evenings, sometimes reflected in the sea, and this seems to be a far more evocative origin for the name “Golden Bay” - a direct translation from Maori identity. Revised March 2009 2 1. INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background This report was commissioned by the Tasman Environmental Trust (TET) in order to develop a strategic view of opportunities for the Cobb Mitigation Fund, on the advice of its Cobb Mitigation Fund sub-committee. The fund has been generated by Cobb Power Limited as mitigation for consent to operate the Cobb River Power Scheme for a 35-year period from 2001.

I have also studied karst and karst hydrology overseas and therefore have acquired a first-hand international perspective on the significance of the Te Waikoropupu Springs and its groundwater system. As a result, I have long been aware of the unique nature and importance of Te Waikoropupu Springs and so was pleased to agree to present evidence in support of their conservation when approached to do so by the Friends of Golden Bay. Qualifications and Experience 3 I have the following qualifications and experience: (a) PhD (Cambridge 1965) (b) ScD (Cambridge 1991) (c) Senior Fellow, International Association of Geomorphologists (2009) (d) Professor and now Emeritus Professor, School of Environment, University of Auckland (since 1972) (e) Member of Geoscience Society of NZ, NZ Geographical Society, NZ Hydrological Society, NZ Speleological Society, International Association of Hydrogeologists, International Association of Geomorphologists, International Union of Speleology.
