Swim Across America exists to defeat these statistics and the good news is that every year, millions of Americans are beating cancer through advancements in treatments—many of which were fundedWe hope you will partner with us to invest in local doctors and researchers who are the pioneers in developing cures and new treatments to fight cancer. SPONSORSHIP Swim Across America (SAA) is a national organization dedicated to raising money and awareness for cancer research, prevention and treatment through PACKAGES swimming-related events. Since its inception in 1987, SAA has raised more than $80 million and leveraged an additional $200 million and currently has over 20 swims throughout the country. Recently, SAA was recognized as one of the original investors in Keytruda, the first FDA approved cancer treatment that specifically targets a tumor’s biomarkers. SAA St. Louis will hold our 6th Annual open water swim on Saturday, August 28, 2021 at Innsbrook Resort. Here are some key facts about Swim Across America St. Louis: ■ In our first 5 years, SAA-STL has raised more than $679,000.continuing a rapid growth in participation and fundraising. ■ More than 480 swimmers from all skill levels and ranging from ages 6 to 80 participated in the event. ■ Among those participating in the event were 5 College teams, including Mizzou, UMSL, Truman State, McKendree and Maryville, as well as many high schools and youth organizations. Many of them have been with us all three years. ■ 5 Olympians were in attendance and three Olympians joined us for a tour at Siteman Cancer Center, bringing joy to patients who had or would be receiving stem cell transplants. Olympians were also available for photo opportunities with participants. ■ Your local planning team consists solely of volunteers, some of whom have been personally impacted by cancer.     ABOUT SWIM ACROSS AMERICA Once Upon a Time... Swim Across America is the inspired sequel to a triumphant Run Across America completed by the two founders of SAA in 1985. This eight-month journey, which spanned the country from Boston to Los Angeles, raised over $1 million for cancer research. What makes this trek all the more remarkable is that one of the determined runners, a 22-year-old from Fairfield, CT, had lost his right leg to cancer a decade before. Following college graduation, these two childhood buddies embarked on their mission, making history in the process. Together, they instilled hope in all who fight this disease and heightened consciousness about overcoming this frightening diagnosis. It was in 1987 that Jeff Keith and Matt Vossler decided to bring their cause back home and transitioned from running to swimming for a cure. With a focus on raising money and awareness for cancer research, prevention and treatment, Swim Across America was chartered as a 501c3 nonprofit organization. And We Continue to Evolve! Since our inception, we have grown from a single event in Nantucket, MA, to dozens of events across the U.S. From New York to California, we are swimming across America. To date, Swim Across America has raised over $60 million for cancer research, prevention and treatment. Examining the boycott from an athlete’s perspective provides evidence as to how the boycott impacted the athletes. The interview also underscores how Glenn Mills was able to turn the boycott into something positive in his life. Biography Glenn Mills was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania on November 21, 1961; however, for the majority of his childhood he lived in North Ridgeville, Ohio. When Mr. Mills was young, one of his two older brothers, Kyle, was diagnosed with Osteogenic Sarcoma, more commonly known as bone cancer. Shortly after the diagnosis, Kyle died, which caused Mr. Mills to become more dedicated to swimming. Mr. Mills moved to Cincinnati, Ohio to train with a more superior swim team. Throughout his life Mr. Mills also lived in Tuscaloosa, Alabama; Cleveland, Ohio; New Paltz, New York; Stevensville, Maryland; and New York, New York.
