USA Water Polo LD A S HI W C I M Y M R E E R V E E M A F F O L L A H G IN M IN IM TE W RNATIONAL S 2020 Year in Review Dear Members, Donors and Supporters, The year 2020 began with new hopes and promises for the International Swimming Hall of Fame (ISHOF). It evolved into challenges and reflections. Twelve months later, we are back to hopes and promises. This International Swimming Hall of Fame yearbook showcases the ongoing hopes we have for the future of the International Swimming Hall of Fame and the promises that a new aquatic center will bring to all of us. Although 2020 brought many things to a halt, including our induction ceremonies, the City of Fort Lauderdale continued with the construction of its new aquatic center pools, grandstands, and diving tower. The facility is on schedule to open in the third quarter of 2021. New locker rooms and aquatic offices will open in early 2022. We are still in the early approval process of upgrading our museum buildings and have grand visions for the future. Needless to say, we have been working hard during the Covid-19 pandemic. The year 2020 also brought ISHOF closer to its underlying mission of preventing childhood drownings when we acquired the Every Child A Swimmer trademark. With that acquisition, we renewed our efforts to promote “Learn To Swim” programs and get a bill furthered in the Florida state legislature that requires children to complete a national recognized swimming lesson program prior to being admitted into kindergarten. These efforts take time and money, and we appreciate those who donated to ISHOF to further that mission. With the hope of a 2020ne Olympics in Tokyo and a renewal of our Hall of Fame Induction ceremonies in September (MISHOF in Atlanta) and October (ISHOF in Fort Lauderdale), 2021 will set us on a bigger, stronger and a more defined path. We have never been more optimistic about the future of ISHOF than we are now! The concrete fountain slab for the grandstand and pool west end of the restroom filtration room was poured last week and this week a team building. We were there to select the color and textures for the dive tower and review the construction plans. The Kissimmee plant manager stated that the dive tower is a very complex structure with a high degree of difficulty, we definitely get the gold medal for most challenging design!     SWIMMER’S NEWSLETTER FOR PRINCETON TIGER AQUATICS CLUB Tigers are Back in the Pool! by: Aditi Pavuluri It’s been a strange past few months for swimmers across the country, and one of the few times in history where there have been no competitions or practice taking place. The Olympics were postponed for the first time ever, and competitive swimmers across the globe are wondering when they can start competing again. As of two weeks ago, swimmers have taken to the pool for the first time in months. To pass the time, they’ve been working out over Zoom, and doing as much work as they could while still socially distanced. By working on technique, starts, turns, and speed, the Tigers have been trying to get in as much swimming as they can to make up for lost time. It will be a fresh start for us, and a way to start using muscles that haven’t been awoken in months. And though we’ve been staying in shape, we might not necessarily have been staying in swimming shape. Getting back into the pool is something that every swimmer is having to experience, and know that we’re in this together. So right now is the perfect time to improve on something that you’ve been holding off on during competition season. Our perspective might have to change from “getting back to where we came from” to “how far we can go”. Take advantage of this new and unusual time to better yourself as a swimmer. Go Tigers! She is the most famous female swimmer of Roman legend. 216 A.D. - The Baths of Caracalla, regarded as the greatest architectural and engineering feat of the Roman Empire and the largest bathing/swimming complex ever built opens. Swimming in the public bath houses was as much a part of Roman life as drinking wine. At first, bathing was segregated by gender, with no mixed male and female bathing, but by the mid second century, men and women bathed together in the nude, which lead to the baths becoming notorious for sexual activities. 600 A.D. - With the gothic conquest of Rome and the destruction of the Aquaducts that supplied water to the public baths, the baths close. Soon bathing and nudity are associated with paganism and be- come regarded as sinful activities by the Roman Church. 1200’s - Thinking it might be a useful skill, European sailors relearn to swim and when they do it, it is in the nude. Women, as the gatekeepers of public morality don’t swim because they have no acceptable swimming garments.
