MATE - MUSEO MARIO TESTINO PRESENTS “GEOGRAFÍA DE LA DIFERENCIA” EXHIBITION BY THE PERUVIAN ARTIST PHILIPPE GRUENBERG

MATE - Museo Mario Testino presents “Geografía de la Diferencia”, solo exhibition by the Peruvian artist Philippe Gruenberg, which opened to the public on Wednesday, April 8, 2015.

Thanks to the partnership between the prestigious MATE and Delfina Foundation, Gruenberg participated in an artist residency program between July and September 2014 in the city of London. This new institutional alliance aims to promote cultural exchange between and the United Kingdom, allowing a Peruvian artist to perform an annual residency at the Delfina Foundation and then present an exhibition at the Museum as a result of its investigation. Founded in 2007, the Delfina Foundation provides opportunities for curators, writers and artists to develop their practice, explore cultural connections, and make collabora- tions with colleagues, communities and institutions. To date, it has received nearly 100 professionals in the field of arts over 24 countries.

In “Geografía de la Diferencia”, Gruenberg highlights the various configurations and construction dispu- tes territorial urban space and its place in the minds of citizens. The artist exhibits, among other pieces, a group of images documenting the transfer of the palm trees of an oasis in the desert of Ica to a private area in the bay of and a video of the community of surfers from Costa Verde and its environment.

In the artist’s words: “The city and its different construction processes, show us our own building process as individuals and collectively. The city defines us both as individuals, society and the right to decide which city we want, is certainly something worth fighting for. “

The exhibition “Geografía de la Diferencia” has been possible thanks to the support of Phorma Inmobiliaria and the company Multivisón. The entrance fee is S / .3.00 and hours are Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8:00 pm The exhibition will last until July 26 in MATE - Mario Testino Museum, located at Av . Pedro de Osma 409, Barranco.

Philippe Gruenberg

Born in Lima (1972), where he currently lives and works. He studied Economy and Philosophy at the Lon- don School of Economics and Political Science and later Photography at the Instituto Gaudí of Lima. His work has been exhibited in SUMMA Contemporary Art Fair, Madrid, Spain (2013), Miami Basel, USA (2013), the Contemporary Art Museum of Monterrey - MARCO, Mexico (2012), the Pinacoteca of Sao Paulo, (2011), the Lima Art Museum - MALI (2007), the XXV Sao Paulo Biennial, Brazil (2002), the IX Cuen- ca International Biennial, Ecuador (2007), as well as several other venues. He is a founding member and co-director of the artist-run spaces Galeria del Escusado, Lima (2001-02) and Espacio La Culpable, Lima (2002-08). The work of Philippe Gruenberg, although exploring different media other than photography, has focused on the construction of narratives and symbolic journeys revolving around the landscape, generally seen from an urban perspective and surrounding the building of public and local spaces of Lima.
