Nestled within a quiet enclave almost equidistant between the thriving villages of and Todwick is Bishops Stable, a large and extremely attractive barn conversion that has been stylishly modernised by the current owners. “For me I’d say it was the location that proved to be one of the main attractions when we came across this property sixteen years ago,” says Clare. “I work in , Sheffield and Nottingham, so being within easy reach of both the M1 and M18 has been a real godsend. However our immediate surroundings are peaceful and very rural, so we’ve been able to enjoy the best of both worlds.”

“The property began life as a farm building and was converted into a home in 1987, so when we came here fifteen years later it was definitely in need of a bit of TLC. Since then we’ve had the whole house renovated to a really high standard and it’s now absolutely beautiful throughout. We’ve been sympathetic to the style and sense of history of the building, so features such as the beautiful old exposed beams are on display, but it’s very much a modern home in every other respect. The layout flows beautifully and there’s a tremendous feeling of light and space throughout, however although each of the rooms is generously proportioned the house also has a really cosy feel. We’ve been incredibly happy here and I know I’m going to be devastated to leave.”

“The garden room, lounge, dining room and one of the bedrooms all open onto the garden, so there’s a really nice connection between inside and out,” continues Clare, “and the garden itself is just lovely. We stayed at Le Manoir au Quat’Saisons and fell in love with the gardens there and so took inspiration when designing our own. We’ve planted lots of lavender, there are pergolas festooned with roses and we also have a pretty pond and water feature. It’s a very attractive space and both peaceful and private, and in my mind it’s a standout feature of the property.”

“Todwick, which is within walking distance, is a lovely little village and caters for just about all of our day-to-day needs, and for everything else we can head into Sheffield,” says Clare. “We also benefit from really good transport links, and being surrounded by all of this glorious countryside means that we can go for lovely long walks. For us it’s been absolutely ideal.”

“When we bought the house there were eight bedrooms, but we decided to knock three into one to create a fabulous master suite,” says Clare. “It features huge oak beams and four stunning chandeliers, so as well as being a real retreat it’s also a very impressive-looking space.”

“The property as a whole has been a real haven for the past sixteen years and I know I’m going to be so sad when the time comes to leave,” says Clare. “I feel that we have transformed the house into a really outstanding home and I’ve loved living here.”
