Vedoucí diplomové práce prof. PhDr. Petr Osolsobě, Ph.D. Anotace Diplomová práce „Imaginace a snění v anglickém romantismu“ pojednává o významu obraznosti a snění pro kulturu Anglie 19. století. Tyto pojmy propojuje s díly vybraných romantických autorů a pokouší se určit, jaký vliv mělo snění na romantickou imaginaci, a ta dále na tvůrčí proces. Otázka imaginace má význam jak pro obecnou estetiku, tak pro psychologii tvorby a umění. Zájem romantických autorů se opět přesouvá z čisté racionality k duchovním a spirituálním tématům a citovosti. Autoři přitom čerpají z tehdejších psychologických výzkumů na toto téma, mnohdy však také předjímají výzkumy moderních psychologů. Od imaginace často odlišují fantazii, někdy je tento rozdíl však nepodstatný. Podobnou úlohu mělo také snění, které je v podstatě nejhlubší formou imaginace. Práce rovněž zkoumá, jakým způsobem se téma snu objevovalo v romantické poezii. Annotation Diploma thesis „Imagination and dreaming in English romanticism“ deals with the meaning of imagination and dreaming in the culture of England in 19th century. It connects these terms with works of selected romantic authors a attemps to determine what kind of influence dreaming had on Romantic imagination and what influence imagination had on creative process. Imagination is important not only to general aesthetics, but also to psychology of creation and art. Interest of romantic authors shifted back to religious and spiritual topics from pure rationality. Authors are also inspired by contemporary psychologic researches, often they anticipated also modern reasearchers in psychology. They often distinguish the fancy from the imagination, sometimes this difference doesn’t play a role. Similar role was given to dreaming, which is a deeper for of the imagination. MAYS University College Dublin THE LAST ATTEMPT TO COLLECT Coleridge’s poetical writing, plays as well as poems, was in 1912. The 1912 edition, edited by Ernest Hartley Coleridge for the Clarendon Press,1 proved remarkably durable but mistakes and omissions have become evident; also, expectations con- cerning the way poetry texts should be presented have altered in the intervening years. In EHC’s edition, the poems were arranged in two categories: Volume I was made up of a main sequence of serious and achieved poems, and Volume II contained sequences of different sub- canonical forms and levels of achievement (epigrams, jeux d’esprit, metrical experiments, drafts and fragments). The effect of the divided arrangement was to relegate Volume II material to a category where it appeared extra, optional, ignorable. The less literary and the less finished were bundled away and excluded, the implication being that there are higher and lower levels of poetic activity and those which fail to preserve decent poetic reputation are best ignored. The old edition was put together at a time when poetry aimed to be poetic in a late nineteenth-century, high serious or at least magical kind of way, and times have changed. The canonical/non- canonical separation is nowadays more contentious than helpful, and the poems in the forthcoming new edition are therefore arranged in a unified chronological sequence. This synthesis of the images from the two poems occurs in the long letter Keats wrote to his brother and sister-in-law (February to April, I8I9), immediately after the first draft of 'La Belle Dame Sans Merci'. Miriam Allott, The Poems ofjohn Keats, rev. ed., gives the holograph variant 'sedge-buried· urn' (p. 508). 2. It would be more accurate to say that the poem is 'in process of' receiving critical attention. Earl R. Wasserman, The Finer Tone: Keats' Major Poems, devotes an entire chapter to it (pp. 6 3-8 3) in what I take to be the 'breakthrough', and the poem has recently been dealt with in some detail by Fran~ois Matthey, The Evolution of Keats's Structural Imagery, pp. I74-81. The almost unanimous preference for the earlier version need not be documented in detail. Of the critics I have read, only Matthey seems to favour the 'Indicator' version, for reasons which seem quite close to my own, as will be seen. 3· A survey, which is at least a temporary landing-place amidst the flood, can be found in Harvey T. Lyon, Keats' Well-Read Urn: An Introduction to Literary Method.
