Gottschalk 1 Mary Gottschalk Cultures of the Middle East 220 Professor Abdelrahim Salih Final Paper Music in the Middle East The “Middle East” is a term to describe the areas of North Africa and East Asia, where there is a deep cultural history and diverse people, commonly grouped in this term for their cultural similarities. As with trade, information, and innovation, music and the arts moved and assimilated throughout the area. Music pervades the culture in aspects of religion, tradition, and entertainment, and differs according to various conceptions of music based within those religious and cultural ideals. This paper will discuss some of the similarities and differences in middle eastern music: in the instruments as they relate to location, conceptions as they are formed by Muslim doctrine, and traditions based in their respective time periods. Instruments / Place Musical instruments in the middle east range in the complexity, skill needed to play, and type. Broad classifications consist of percussion, bowed, plucked, and wind instruments (Touma 1996 109). A predominant stringed instrument is known as the ‟ud, which literally means “wood”, but it has many names and variations throughout the world (Miller and Shahriari 2006 204). The ‟ud, or al‟ud “…is a fretless, plucked short-necked lute with a body shaped like half a pear” (Touma 1996 109). Its history traces back to the eighth century BCE with changes in size and number of strings, and today is commonly seen with “…five „courses‟ of strings, a course being a pair tuned in unison” (Miller and Shahriari 2006 204). The lack of frets allows the musician to articulate fine gradations of tone, strumming with either a plectrum or fingernails over the middle of the „ud‟s body (Miller and Shahriari 2006 205). -

The Sound of Culture, The Structure of Tradition Musicians7 Work in Arab Detroit Anne Rasmussen WITH THEIR LOUD sound systems and lively dance tunes, Arab Amer- ican musicians bring to community gatherings an all-encompassing sonic environment that replaces the host culture with the home cul- ture. Night after night, performance after performance, they supply "the language of Diaspora" (Clifford 1994). While I have framed musicians as "curators of culture" and their activity as "art," they have continuously referred to the same as "work" (Rasmussen 1989, 1991). Their work, as they have told me time and again, is audience driven, and they are surprisingly compliant with the sometimes abrupt demands of their clientele. Although this way of performing cannot be reduced to a simple formula, several patterns are apparent in the careers of Arab American musicians that help explain why they tend to discuss their "art" as "work,"1 and these patterns have been in place for much of the twentieth century. -

Song and music at all times used to accompany man from the cradle to the grave and were a necessary accompaniment of all important family events. The most popular of the musical instruments were bagpipes, usually with violin, clarinet and cembalo accompaniment. Typical for pastoral soloist music were different types of fifes and horns, the latter often monstrous contraptions, several feet long. Traditional folk music has been at present superseded by modern forms, but old rural musical instruments and popular tunes have been revived in amateur groups of folklore music or during folklore festivals. MAINTAINING A MUSICAL TRADITION IN ARAB-AMERICA: AN ORAL HISTORY OF ABDEL KARIM BADER By Igor Nunes Houwat A THESIS Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS Musicology 2011 ABSTRACT MAINTAINING A MUSICAL TRADITION IN ARAB-AMERICA: AN ORAL HISTORY OF ABDEL KARIM BADER By Igor Nunes Houwat Abdel Karim Bader, a cosmopolitan oud performer and teacher, was born in the Arab world in the early 1920s and immigrated to the United States of America in the early nineteen seventies. This thesis is an oral history that explores Bader as a carrier of an Arabic musical tradition, tarab, through three topics: biography, pedagogy, and improvisation. Bader’s biography unveils a rich social and musical persona which is understood through the lens of tarab musicianship and values. He favors a pragmatic apprenticeship method, common to tarab musicians, that heavily relies on oral methods to transmit ideas, repertoire, and stylistic subtleties. Finally, Bader’s improvisatory thought is influenced by both his knowledge of Arabic music theory and his performance experience, and it is exposed through examples from my lessons and an analysis of a solo improvisation. I have been Bader’s apprentice since January 2010 and view this study as a contribution to a little-known facet of Arab-American identity and cultural practice. Arab Musical Instruments Arab Musical Instruments 'ud, tablah, qanun, nay, mijwiz, buzuq, daff From Fairouz; Legend and Legacy In every Arab country, one hear the same distinctive sounds; whether instrumental or vocal, the melodies are remarkably similar in emotive power, tonal range, and rhythmic drive. Although the practiced ear can recognize variations of musical style, as it can the dialects of language, which distinguish the spoken word from country to country, the sounds remain unmistakably those of the music of one people. The historical origins of this music, however, are extremely heterogeneous. Early Arab musicians borrowed copiously from the Egyptians, Assyrians, and Sumerians. Many of the instruments now used are direct descendents of those depicted in the wall paintings and carvings of these past civilizations. The distinctive quality of Arab music owes a great deal to the type of instruments employed. As ancient and traditional as the music itself, the present forms of these instruments evolved primarily in the eighth through tenth centuries, during that creative zenith of classical Islamic civilization known as the Golden Age. The English word lute, which derives from the Spanish laud, originally came from the Arabic al-' ‘Ud, literally meaning 'branch of wood.' Between the eighth and tenth centuries, the 'ud had only four strings; a fifth was added by Zitiab, the famous Andalusian performer, and a sixth later on in the fifteenth century. Shaped like half a pear with a short fretted neck, the 'ud is a six courses of two-strings instrument played with a plectrum - often a trimmed eagle's feather - producing a deep and mellow sound Virtuosos across the Middle East refer to it as 'the King of all instruments.' The tablah is a small hand-drum also known as the durbakke. -

MY PRAGUE—written by a former participant in the FIU Czech Study Abroad Pgm who returned the next year to Prague and wrote about her feelings A Gothic footbridge made of stone spans the broad Vltava River, linking five ancient towns together into Prague, the hauntingly beautiful capital city of the Czech Republic. West of the bridge is the Old Town; to the east is Mala Strana (the Little Quarter), a collection of crooked cobbled streets between the river and the castle on the hill. Strolling across Charles Bridge at twilight, the "City of One Hundred Spires" looks distinctly unreal, as dreamlike and hallucinatory as any of the art it has inspired. This is Franz Kafka's city, after all. A town where nothing is quite as it appears. A town steeped in legends and alchemy, with a long, bizarre, rather tragic history. Where the past is tangible, crowding the present-day streets with ghosts and stories. The apartment where I am staying is in Mala Strana, tucked between crumbling Baroque buildings, quiet parks and the bubbling Devil's Stream -- named, I am told, for a demon in the water, or else for a washerwoman's temper. I have come because of the Art Nouveau movement which blossomed here one hundred years before. With its roots deeply planted in Czech folklore, Art Nouveau architecture and design has turned Prague into a fantasist's dream: extravagantly adorned with sprites, undines, and the pensive heroes of myth and legend, standing draped over doorways, on turret towers, holding up the red-tile roofs.
