George David Birkhoff and His Mathematical Work
GEORGE DAVID BIRKHOFF AND HIS MATHEMATICAL WORK MARSTON MORSE The writer first saw Birkhoff in the fall of 1914. The graduate stu dents were meeting the professors of mathematics of Harvard in Sever 20. Maxime Bôcher, with his square beard and squarer shoes, was presiding. In the back of the room, with a different beard but equal dignity, William Fogg Osgood was counseling a student. Dun ham Jackson, Gabriel Green, Julian Coolidge and Charles Bouton were in the business of being helpful. The thirty-year-old Birkhoff was in the front row. He seemed tall even when seated, and a friendly smile disarmed a determined face. I had no reason to speak to him, but the impression he made upon me could not be easily forgotten. His change from Princeton University to Harvard in 1912 was de cisive. Although he later had magnificent opportunities to serve as a research professor in institutions other than Harvard he elected to remain in Cambridge for life. He had been an instructor at Wisconsin from 1907 to 1909 and had profited from his contacts with Van Vleck. As a graduate student in Chicago he had known Veblen and he con tinued this friendsip in the halls of Princeton. Starting college in 1902 at the University of Chicago, he changed to Harvard, remained long enough to get an A.B. degree, and then hurried back to Chicago, where he finished his graduate work in 1907. It was in 1908 that he married Margaret Elizabeth Grafius. It was clear that Birkhoff depended from the beginning to the end on her deep understanding and encouragement. -

LONG-TERM HISTORY AND EPHEMERAL CONFIGURATIONS CATHERINE GOLDSTEIN Abstract. Mathematical concepts and results have often been given a long history, stretching far back in time. Yet recent work in the history of mathe- matics has tended to focus on local topics, over a short term-scale, and on the study of ephemeral configurations of mathematicians, theorems or practices. The first part of the paper explains why this change has taken place: a renewed interest in the connections between mathematics and society, an increased at- tention to the variety of components and aspects of mathematical work, and a critical outlook on historiography itself. The problems of a long-term history are illustrated and tested using a number of episodes in the nineteenth-century history of Hermitian forms, and finally, some open questions are proposed. -

Meetings of the MAA Ken Ross and Jim Tattersall MEETINGS 1915-1928 “A Call for a Meeting to Organize a New National Mathematical Association” was DisseminateD to subscribers of the American Mathematical Monthly and other interesteD parties. A subsequent petition to the BoarD of EDitors of the Monthly containeD the names of 446 proponents of forming the association. The first meeting of the Association consisteD of organizational Discussions helD on December 30 and December 31, 1915, on the Ohio State University campus. 104 future members attendeD. A three-hour meeting of the “committee of the whole” on December 30 consiDereD tentative Drafts of the MAA constitution which was aDopteD the morning of December 31, with Details left to a committee. The constitution was publisheD in the January 1916 issue of The American Mathematical Monthly, official journal of The Mathematical Association of America. Following the business meeting, L. C. Karpinski gave an hour aDDress on “The Story of Algebra.” The Charter membership included 52 institutions and 1045 inDiviDuals, incluDing six members from China, two from EnglanD, anD one each from InDia, Italy, South Africa, anD Turkey. OSGOOD AXIME BÔCHER WAS BORN in Boston, August 28, 1867, M and died at his home in Cambridge, September 12, 1918. His father, Ferdinand Bôcher, was the first professor of modern languages at the Massachusetts Institute of Tech- nology. Shortly after Mr. Charles W. Eliot, at that time professor of analytical chemistry and metallurgy in the same institution, became President of Harvard University, Professor Bôcher was called to Cambridge (in 1872) and for three decades was one of the leading teachers in the faculty of Harvard College. He was an enthusiastic collector of books. His library, which was divided after his death, formed the nucleus of the library of the French Department and yielded, furthermore, a welcome accession to the library of the Cercle Français; but its most important part, the valuable Moliére and Montaigne collections, passed intact to the library of Harvard College. It was through the generosity of Mr. James Hazen Hyde, who bought the whole library, that such a disposition of the books became possible. This memoir was written in December 1918 and is reprinted from the Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society 25(1919):337-50 with permission of the American Mathematical Society.
