Women, Emancipation and Literature The Papers of 18021876 from University Library

DETAILED LISTING

Throughout this listing the abbreviation HM has been used for Harriet Martineau. The other abbreviations used are:

MS: Holograph manuscript. ALS: Autograph letter, signed. LS: Letter not in the correspondent’s own hand but signed by him or her. AL: Autograph letter, not signed.

In dealing with the contents of the letters only matters which seemed to be of particular interest or importance have been mentioned. Often correspondents addressed their letters to Maria Martineau at times when Harriet Martineau was too ill to write herself. In such cases the letters have been treated as if they were addressed to Harriet herself.
