Second and Third Grade Summer Reading

Summer Reading! As always, summer reading nurtures our love of story, and we know that stories inspire minds and cultivate hearts. Books lead us into places both familiar and new allowing us to explore new territory and engage with new ideas.

Required Reading: Hoboken Chicken Emergency by Daniel Pinkwater Students enter the year developing a new class community. They also learn about the community of Hoboken as school begins. Students will explore the community of Hoboken through walking trips, and on an early trip they will visit different areas referred to in The Hoboken Chicken Emergency. This book can be read aloud by a parent or read by the student as they are able.

Beyond the required reading: Choose to read any three books you and your family decide are a good fit from the list below, each from a different category. Parents are encouraged to read and talk about the books with children, especially if the book is written above the child’s independent reading level.
