  • The New Yorker
Kindle Edition, 2015 © The New Yorker COMMENT SEARCH AND RESCUE BY PHILIP GOUREVITCH On the evening of May 22, 1988, a hundred and ten Vietnamese men, women, and children huddled aboard a leaky forty-five-foot junk bound for Malaysia. For the price of an ounce of gold each—the traffickers’ fee for orchestrating the escape—they became boat people, joining the million or so others who had taken their chances on the South China Sea to flee Vietnam after the Communist takeover. No one knows how many of them died, but estimates rose as high as one in three. The group on the junk were told that their voyage would take four or five days, but on the third day the engine quit working. For the next two weeks, they drifted, while dozens of ships passed them by. They ran out of food and potable water, and some of them died. Then an American warship appeared, the U.S.S. Dubuque, under the command of Captain Alexander Balian, who stopped to inspect the boat and to give its occupants tinned meat, water, and a map. The rations didn’t last long. The nearest land was the Philippines, more than two hundred miles away, and it took eighteen days to get there. By then, only fifty-two of the boat people were left alive to tell how they had made it—by eating their dead shipmates. It was an extraordinary story, and it had an extraordinary consequence: Captain Balian, a much decorated Vietnam War veteran, was relieved of his command and court- martialled, for failing to offer adequate assistance to the passengers.

  • Picasso Black and White
PICASSO BLACK AND WHITE OCTOBER 5, 2012–JANUARY 23, 2013 Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum Teacher Resource Unit A NOTE TO TEACHERS Few artists have exerted as great an influence over subsequent generations as Pablo Picasso, who is renowned for his innovative explorations in a prodigious variety of styles and techniques. Picasso Black and White is the first exhibition in a major museum setting to explore the artist’s recurrent use of black and white across his prolific career. Organized chronologically, the exhibition traces his continued return to this deceptively simple palette in his Rose and Blue period paintings, investigations into Cubism, neoclassical and Surrealist-inspired figure paintings, forceful scenes of war, allegorical still lifes, homages to old master canvases, novel interpretations of historical subjects, and the highly charged works of his twilight years. Comprising 118 paintings, sculptures, and works on paper, the exhibition is drawn from museums across Europe and the United States, as well as private collections, including those of the Picasso family. The exhibition is organized by Carmen Giménez, Stephen and Nan Swid Curator of Twentieth-Century Art, with assistance from Karole Vail, Associate Curator, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. This Resource Unit focuses on various aspects of Picasso’s work and provides techniques for exploring both the visual arts and other areas of the curriculum. Before bringing your class to the Guggenheim, we invite you to visit the exhibition, read the guide, and decide which aspects of the exhibition are most relevant to your students. For more information, and to schedule a visit for your class, please call 212 423 3637.

  • Program Notes
1 PROGRAM NOTES Introduction The main purpose of this work is to provide program notes for all my compositions, or, to be precise, all those I consider worthy of retention. Others not mentioned here have been withdrawn, and I do not wish them to be performed. I have not provided details here for the theatrical works in the Patria cycle, but have merely listed them in the order in which they were composed. They have been discussed in detail in the book Patria: The Complete Cycle (Coach House Books, Toronto, 2002). The works are listed chronologically by the year in which they were composed or completed. An index will list the works alphabetically giving the number of each work for easy reference. In an appendix, I will provide a list of errata in all published scores, at least those errors that performances have revealed to date. I am frequently asked by performers and publicists to provide program notes to my works. Some works have notes in the scores, others do not. In this catalogue I shall say something about each work, so that the collection as a whole could be taken as an evolution of my thinking as a composer. A word of warning. I am not always careful about bibliographical details such as dates of composition or performance. This information is presumably accurate in Stephen Adams biography up to 1981, when the book went to press.1 One might expect this list to have been updated by some ambitious doctoral candidate at one of the Canadian beaneries, but these students are evidently applying their talents to more glittering projects.

  • 1. Pendahuluan
Sejarah Seni Rupa Modern 1 1.

  • Radical Vernaculars FINAL DRAFT with Figures
Radical Vernaculars Experiments with Tradition between Politics and Performance Gabriel J. Levine A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN SOCIAL AND POLITICAL THOUGHT YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO September 2014 © Gabriel J. Levine 2014 ABSTRACT This dissertation focuses on four collective projects that take “tradition” as a starting point for creative experiments in performance practice. All of these disparate projects are based in early 21st-century settler-colonial North America, and all of them have anachronistic, political, and playful qualities. Following a theoretical and methodological Introduction, the dissertation moves through close readings of four experiments with “traditional” practices. Chapter One looks at the Purim Extravaganza, a diasporic and queer version of the carnivalesque Jewish festival that takes place each year in New York City. Chapter Two addresses the mobile audiovisual performances of Ottawa DJ collective A Tribe Called Red, exploring Indigenous experiments with technology and tradition. Chapter Three gives an account of the Abandoned Practices Institute, a summer school in performance pedagogy based on forgotten or endangered everyday practices, run by former members of the performance collective Goat Island. Chapter Four investigates the North American revival of culinary fermentation practices, spurred in part by the writings of Sandor Katz, in order to examine the contradictions of vernacular revivals at the level of daily life. All of these collective experiments offer insight into the fate of “tradition” as that which is abandoned (and then recuperated in frozen form) during the modernizing process, especially in settler-colonial societies.
