Using LearningExpress as an example, participants will leave with tools for connecting the right content with the right customer using methods that can be applied to any database. METAMORPHOSIS IN A LIBRARY COLLECTION Frida M. The color illustrations, bilingual text, activity pages and timelines will help you learn and discover the cultures and heritage of the El Paso Southwest. DIVERSITY IN YA LITERATURE Jennifer N. Montes, Public Services Librarian – El Paso Public Library Diversity in YA literature is crucial for teens to not only see themselves in literature but also to be exposed to new perspectives and ideas. Join a discussion on how to select and promote diverse YA literature in your library. HELPING STUDENTS SUCCEED IN THEIR ACADEMIC FUTURE – NATIONAL HISTORY DAY Joy Urbina, Library Assistant III – University of TX at El Paso Session on how librarians can help students with El Paso History Day and National History Day projects. Presenter will review the bibliographic instruction done at the UTEP Library. We will practice narrowing down topics, explaining the theme to students and choosing a good topic. 10:30 – 11:00 District 6 Fall Meeting Led by Sol Lopez, District 6 Chair and Sharon Amastae, TLA Past President. You do not need to be a TLA member to attend this meeting! Come and hear about what’s happening in District 6 and in TLA. 11:15 – 12:30 Session Two Workshops PATRON DRIVEN ACQUISITIONS/DEMAND DRIVEN ACQUISITIONS – THE NMSU PILOT John Sandstrom, Acquisitions Librarian – New Mexico State University Samantha Rich, Assessment & Data Management Librarian – New Mexico State University How is your collection development program affected when you are paying for materials that are actually used? This session explores trends and challenges of PDA within the library community and describes the results of the PDA pilot program at NMSU Library. LOTERIA: A LIBRARIAN’S SPIN Maria Teresa Torres, Library Clerk - El Paso Community College, Northwest Fernando Racelis, Librarian - El Paso Community College, Northwest Fernando Racelis and Maria Teresa Torres have developed a game of Loteria using children’s book characters and titles. Learn how they developed it and how it can be used in other school and library settings. OUR LITTLE FREE LIBRARIES IN THE BORDERLANDS Lisa M. Lopez-Williamson, School Librarian - Herrera Elementary, EPISD and Literacy Advocate R. Joseph Rodriguez, Assistant Professor, Department of English - University of TX at El Paso How can Little Free Libraries advance literacies for all? Join us to learn more about the Little Free Library Movement, a wonderful grassroots literacy initiative which began in the Midwest and is now global that promotes a love of books, reading, sharing, recycling, and a sense of community. We will present a brief history of the volunteer-driven and community-led Little Free Library book exchanges and how to launch your own. Also, short video footage will be shown to advance the Little Free Library’s motto: “Take a Book - Return a Book", and of the progress we’ve made in spreading them across the borderland from San Elizario to the City of Vinton. Lastly, we will view a Google Map of Little Free Libraries. As a session participant, register to win a locally handcrafted Little Free Library and other door prizes to be raffled. LATINO AMERICANS: LOCAL PROGRAMMING SUPPORTED BY ALA/NEH GRANTS Dr. Elisabeth Stone, Curator of Education - Las Cruces Museum System Claudia Rivers, Head, Special Collections - University of TX at El Paso Library Two recipients of Latino Americans: 500 Years of History grants from ALA/NEH will talk about their experiences applying for grants, planning activities, and how the grants will affect future programming. Attendees will have the opportunity to review and discuss portions of grant proposals. EMBEDDED ACADEMIC LIBRARIANSHIP FOR LIFELONG LEARNING Lorely Ambriz, Librarian/Assistant Professor, El Paso Community College NW Michael Duncan, English/Assistant Professor, El Paso Community College NW Dr. Barbara Yancy-Tooks, Speech/Associate Professor, El Paso Community College NW This workshop will provide academic librarians ideas to examine opportunities to embed library and information literacy skills instruction into the curriculum, to teach students the overall information seeking process and strategies using, the Association for Research and College Libraries Information Literacy Standards (ACRL’s) “Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education” as a framework. Moreover, to produce independent learners with transferable skills through embedded librarianship and faculty collaboration and how to apply an information literacy rubric. BOL Founder and Executive Director - Little Free Library http://littlefreelibrary.org Todd Bol of Hudson, Wisconsin, is creator and executive director of Little Free Library, a Midwest based nonprofit organization whose purpose is to promote literacy and the love of reading by building free neighborhood book exchanges. Founded in 2009, the movement involves volunteers, families, educators, businesses and organizations in the creation and support of activities that promote a sense of community, reading for children, literacy for adults and libraries around the world. Thanks to Todd’s vision and unwavering values, Little Free Library has become a global literacy movement with 30,000 libraries in all 50 states and more than 70 countries. Little Free Library facilitated the exchange of 14.4 million free books worldwide in 2014 alone! There will be more Little Free Libraries than McDonald's by this year's Thanksgiving! In March 2015, The Little Free Library Book was published. The book tells the history of Little Free Library, highlights the charming libraries themselves, gathers quirky and poignant firsthand stories from owners, provides a resource guide for how to best use your Little Free Library, and delights readers with color images of the most creative and inspired Little Free Libraries around. Todd has three decades of experience as a social entrepreneur who has created international programs in nursing education, barter, innovative business models, teaching and community education. He has been interviewed by the NY Times, Washington Post, LA Times, USA Today, NBC Nightly News, and has given TEDx talks and keynote addresses at conferences and book festivals.
