OR EF MA R E l r e P t a p so Cha Dear Library Colleague: On behalf of BRLA, REFORMA-El Paso Chapter and TLA District 6, we would like to invite you to our 2013 Fall Conference on Saturday October 5, 2013. This year, the conference will be held at the beautiful Doña Ana Community College’s Central Campus located at 3400 S. Espina St. in Las Cruces, NM. Conference registration includes a light breakfast, stimulating workshop sessions, and a box lunch from Jason’s Deli. There’s plenty of time to network with fellow librarians and visit with library exhibitors. Continuing education credits will be available for all sessions. Membership in any of the sponsoring associations entitles you to the reduced membership rate. Our luncheon keynote speaker is Benjamin Alire Sáenz. Novelist, poet, and writer of children's books, Mr. Sáenz, was named one of the "Fifty Most Inspiring Authors in the World" by Poets & Writers magazine. His latest collection of short stories Everything Begins and Ends at the Kentucky Club is the winner of the prestigious 2013 PEN/ Faulkner Award for Fiction, as well as a Lambda Literary Finalist for Gay Fiction. You’ll have the opportunity to “meet and greet” Ben Saenz and with area librarians on Friday October 4th from 6:00 – 8:00pm at La Tierra Café located at 1731 Montana Ave. in El Paso, TX. This event is co-sponsored by our three organizations. Enclosed you will find the registration form, a description of planned workshops, a flyer to publicize our event and an exhibitor registration form. Recovering our Roots with Reading / Recuperando Nuestras Raíces con la Lectura Candy Duran Conalep School, Cd. Juarez, Chihuahua CONALEP upper level in Cd. Juarez, Chihuahua, will present five strategies for reading to young students. The focus will be on literature and local writers with the goal of promoting reading and knowledge of local stories. We will present a short video, from one to four minutes, and will distribute brochures. The Metadata Manual: A Practical Workbook Ingrid Schneider Metadata & Authority Control Librarian, New Mexico State University Library This session will discuss The Metadata Manual: A Practical Workbook recently authored by metadata librarians from NMSU and UNM. The session will include information on the development, organization, and objectives of the book. The Unexpected Benefits of Technological Change: Incorporating Ref Analytics into Information Desk Training Susan E. Beck Head of Access Services, New Mexico State University Library Mary Covarrubias-Chavarria Circulation Coordinator, New Mexico State University Library When NMSU Library implemented the reference statistical package, Ref Analytics, the Access Services department seized this opportunity to improve its student assistant training program in basic reference service. Learn how we configured Ref Analytics to meet our service desk needs, structured & assessed our training program and what we learned about our daily desk activity. Weeding 101: Weeding for Everyone John Sandstrom Associate Professor and Acquisitions Librarian, New Mexico State University Library Weeding is the bane of all libraries and librarians, but we all have to do it. Conditional weeding is one of the easiest and fastest types. This workshop will give you the tools to train your staff how to help. Gale Resources in the Advocacy Tool Kit Heather Dahl Account Manager, School Sales Group New Mexico/ El Paso County Heather Dahl recently joined the Cengage/Gale Sales team after 16 years as a school librarian and school social studies teacher. She believes school libraries are the heart of any school and district. Please come enjoy an upbeat session that will allow school librarians to leave with powerful ideas for how to be a leader for digital resource acquisition and use. We Can Do It! Copy Cataloging with RDA 3-Hour Session Liz Miller Head of Cataloging, New Mexico State University Library If you're a little mystified about using RDA at YOUR library, this workshop is for you! Topics to be covered: FRBR, RDA's background, new MARC fields, differences between AACR2 and RDA, and basics of copy cataloging popular formats with RDA. TLA - District 6 Meeting 10:20 – 10:50 Led by Mark Pumphrey, District 6 Chair; Sharon Amastae, TLA President-Elect and other TLA members. You do not need to be a TLA member to attend this meeting! Come and hear about what’s happening in District 6 and in TLA. Supporting Health Literacy @ the Library: How do we help our patrons with their health information needs? Myriam Martinez-Banuelos MLIS Candidate 2014 and Reference Paraprofessional, University of North Texas Health Science Center Libraries are often the first place many people go seeking medical information. Culture and language are major barriers in the border areas when proving health information. This program will serve as a guide for librarians to assist patrons in finding reliable and easy-to-understand information online. This session will walk the audience through several sites that provide primary sources that history students, teachers, and independent researchers can use. What is the OCLC Americas Regional Council and Global Council? Mark Pumphrey, Assistant Director of Libraries, El Paso Public Library and TLA District 6 Chair, 2013-14 In July, 2013, El Paso Public Library Assistant Director of Libraries Mark Pumphrey completed a three- year term as an elected delegate to the OCLC Global Council. Mark will describe his experience and talk about how you can participate in the OCLC membership and governance structure, or become a delegate yourself.
