William Gibson, who provided much of the impetus for such intersec- tions via his contributions to cyberpunk, made the connection between technol- ogy and Gothic rather embarrassingly explicit in his 1986 novel, Count Zero. Less mortifying was the crossover that occurred in the late eighties and nineties between Goth and Industrial music, particularly via bands such as Nine Inch Nails or Frontline Assembly, exploiting a hardcore techno sound combined with a strongly Goth-influenced aesthetic.1 This connection between the Gothic and technoculture has contributed to the survival of a social grouping that Nick Mercer, in 21st Century Goth (2002), refers to as the most vibrant community online, and is also the subject of several studies by Paul Hodkinson in particular. This paper is not especially concerned with the Gothic per se, whether it can tell us something about the intrinsic nature of the web or vice versa, but more with the practice of a youth subculture that does indeed appear to be flourishing in cyberspace, particularly the phe- nomenon of net.Goths that has emerged in recent years. And occasionally, the unexpected happens when you come across a band you’d never heard of that rings your bell. For me, the big draw was Jason Mraz, whom I’d never seen live. And the other was the ‘80s synth pop band Berlin, known for a string of hits like “No More Words,” “Metro,” “Sex” and “Masquerade” that left an indelible mark on the ‘80s music scene with its industrial Euro sound. Little did I know the band was comprised of SoCal natives by way of Orange County. Lead Singer Terri Nunn brought the magic of the ‘80s back like a bolt of lightning, stalking the stage like she stepped out of one of their vintage MTV videos.     AnybodyListening.net/The Breakdown Room SISTER MARY SPEAKS Vocalist's Role with Queensrÿche Continues to Expand By BRIAN J. HEATON Pamela Moore has had a pretty diverse career. Although the singer is widely known for being the riveting voice of "Sister Mary" on Queensrÿche's legendary concept album, Operation: Mindcrime, she's also released her own recordings, contributed her voice to various radio and television commercials, and has a background in theater. The latter came in handy over the past two years, as Moore joined Queensrÿche for an extensive world tour, reprising and expanding her familiar role as the love interest of "Nikki," Operation: Mindcrime's central character. Changes to her customary performance included additional vocal duties and acting out her character's parts on stage - a dramatic performance she was excited to have the opportunity to portray. "This time around I was able to sing more and help out on vocals," Moore explained. "The latter part of the year we really concentrated on bringing to life the Mindcrime show. Since I do have a theater background it was very enjoyable to pull that out again." While she was satisfied by her performance, the Seattle vocalist wasn't aware just how graphic the Sister Mary death scene was, as the character commits suicide by putting a bullet in her head. "I didn't realize it was so bloody," Moore admitted. "At the time [the show] was being rehearsed, I was on my honeymoon and wasn't able to return until a day before the tour started." Moore originally was contacted by the band to record the vocal parts for Sister Mary after the band discovered her doing radio and television commercials for a music store she was working at part time in the late 1980s.
