1 Cultural Daily Independent Voices, New Perspectives BeachLife Music Festival Gets It Right Steve Gottfried · Wednesday, May 15th, 2019 The City of Redondo Beach hosted its first-ever BeachLife Festival with an eclectic lineup of 40 bands on three stages spread over three days from Friday May rd3 to Sunday May 5th. The festival promoters chose well with an impressive roster of headliners which included Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, Bob Weir, Willie Nelson, Jason Mraz and Sugar Ray as well as a wide array of local talent on the smaller Rip Tide Stage. The beauty of music festivals like this is you can pick and choose which performers speak to you and skip the others. And occasionally, the unexpected happens when you come across a band you’d never heard of that rings your bell. For me, the big draw was Jason Mraz, whom I’d never seen live. And the other was the ‘80s synth pop band Berlin, known for a string of hits like “No More Words,” “Metro,” “Sex” and “Masquerade” that left an indelible mark on the ‘80s music scene with its industrial Euro sound. Little did I know the band was comprised of SoCal natives by way of Orange County. Lead Singer Terri Nunn brought the magic of the ‘80s back like a bolt of lightning, stalking the stage like she stepped out of one of their vintage MTV videos. Dressed in a fashionable blue trench coat mini and knee-high black boots, Nunn unleashed the hits with powerful, crystal clear vocals. And the crowd loved every minute. -

9/2016 From one movement to another? Comparing environmental justice activism and food justice alternative practices. Flaminia PADDEU , PhD in geography, member of the ENeC research laboratory, ATER at Sorbonne University (Paris, France), agrégée in geography and graduate from the École Normale Supérieure (Lyon, France). Abstract Food justice activism is generally considered to be an offshoot of environmental justice. We question this lineage based on empirical elements by comparing the two movements in terms of theoretical objectives, daily practices and strategies. Our material comes from the study of two grassroots movements in low-income neighborhoods in the United States – environmental justice in Hunts Point (South Bronx) and food justice in Jefferson-Mack (Detroit) – where we conducted field surveys between 2011 and 2013, interviewing more than sixty stakeholders. We demonstrate how environmental justice activism in the Bronx is the expression of a protest model, involving rallying against polluting infrastructures, whereas food justice alternative practices in Detroit are characterized by the organization of community food security networks. Despite similarities between the two movements, we strongly challenge their “lineage”. Not only do the types of collective action and the catalysts differ markedly, but each of the two movements has evolved relatively independently in the context of an assertion of the food justice movement. Key words South Bronx; Detroit; food justice; environmental justice; alternative practices. 1 1 9/2016 The food justice movement is generally considered to be an offshoot of the environmental justice movement, and the lineages between the two movements were first emphasized in the 1990s (Gottlieb & Fisher, 1996). The term food justice was first used in scientific journals specialized in environmental justice such as Race, Poverty and the Environment (Gottlieb & Fisher, 2000). -

You Saw the Grammys, but You Missed the More Important Awards
You Saw the Grammys, But You Missed the More Important Awards Future Frontiers Kira Peikoff February 02, 2018 The 2018 Stem Cell Action Awards, honoring recipients for advocacy, leadership, and inspiration, presented by the Regenerative Medicine Foundation. (Courtesy RMF) Last week in Miami, more than 450 researchers, physicians, lawyers, ethicists, and executives gathered from far-flung corners of the globe to share the latest updates in stem cell research and regenerative medicine. Sure, a science conference might not seem as glamorous as a celebrity- filled Madison Square Garden, but it’s the place to be if you care about breakthroughs that could give you a longer and healthier life. Here are our top ten takeaways about what’s hot and what’s happening worldwide: “The places you least expect will turn up to produce some really extraordinary things.” 1) The future of stem cell treatment may involve the creation of a universal cell line that is genetically modified so every patient’s immune system will accept it. One of the leading scientists at the convention, Japanese stem cell pioneer Dr. Norio Nakatsuji, dubbed this quest a “very hot topic” right now. Being able to produce one safe cell line for everyone would be much cheaper and faster than having to create and grow patient-specific cells. “It is theoretically possible to genetically modify the lines so everyone can accept them,” said Nakatsuji. A Seattle-based biotech company aptly named Universal Cells is leading the way in this promising area. 2) Japan was the world leader in stem cell research 10 years ago, but has since fallen behind the United States for reasons that some researchers find frustrating.
