Dear Steiff friends,

In our Club magazine, we often talk about the fascination that Steiff animals hold for us. And I am sure you will be able to understand that the motivation of Steiff employees is borne along by this fascination in much the same way that the enthusiasm of the many collectors is. Once again in this issue, committed Club members share with us how Steiff accompanies them throughout a lifetime, and can even make life-long dreams come true. The simple fact that this is so fascinates us and renders any advertising slogan superfluous. Turn to pages 20, 21 and 23, and experience once again the sheer pleasure of Steiff as a hobby. Then it’s on to our spring collection, where every one of our designers’ creations under the motto of “Casino Royal” is a winner. You decide whether to let the croupier play for you – or if you would rather go for the joker instead. Replica fans will be delighted with the 1912 black bear, the original of which sold for an amazing €15,000 at a special auction during the Steiff Summer 2014, and also with “Mr. Vanilla” of 1906. As you would expect, both receive their due recognition in this issue. We are also taking a look back at the 135 years of the company’s history and at two very special Teddy bears, as well as many largely unknown but no less fascinating wooden toys of the past. I would also like to draw your attention to page 4 and ask you to take note of the important organisational changes detailed there. Finally, I would also be delighted if you were to complete our current members’ survey. The form is enclosed with this mailing. Celebrating 135 years Part I: A look back at the enduring legacy of Steiff before World War II.

Oh how time flies! It is hard to believe, but as of 2015, In the 1890’s, in response to her success with felt Margarete Steiff’s company has made precious and playthings, Margarete and her handful of workers started collectible playthings for 135 years. Over that period, experimenting with new toy designs and patterns to many things about the business have changed. These expand their line of products. 1930 - early 1940’s Unlike the 1920’s, the 1930’s and early 1940’s at Steiff were less about innovation and more about getting back to business basics, dealing with changing global economies, and responding to a world in growing political turmoil. Steiff debuted far fewer brand new designs in the 1930’s, and for the most part, those that were launched had an eye towards reduced cost for consumers. A good example of this was Steiff’s Dicky bear, introduced in 1930. He was specifi cally promoted as ... “A new, improved, and less expensive Steiff Teddy Bear. Attractive design, newly formed head, strong squeeze growler, soft fi lling, blond or white mohair with painted pads, movable head and joints, famous workmanship.” The company also introduced its now highly collectible series of petite woollen miniature items in the early 1930’s. These tiny treasures were both “small” in terms of price tag and the amount of space required to display or store them. 1920 - 1930 era Richard Steiff continued to provide invaluable strategic In 1931, the company launched its “higher end” tail moves advice and leadership to Steiff. Wooden toys in the rare miniature catalogue “Bildheft” of 1925. Steiff wooden toys – 1920 to 1930 A journey through time – continued from the November issue.

The brightly-coloured The “Roaring Twenties” – one of the most interesting decades in the history “Eisba” train was of the Steiff company, and not just for its stuffed animals. The period available until 1934. also offered an unimagined abundance of brightly-coloured novelties in wooden toys. Although some were made in larger quantities, many of the toys manufactured in the 1920s are extremely rare today.

The tremendous success of the new toys of 1919 (somewhere in the region of 20,000 wooden toys were sold in that year, an amazing fi gure) naturally resulted in the range being expanded. Although “Eisba”, the brightly- painted wooden train set, is mentioned in the 1919 lists, an illustration The popular wooden does not appear until 1920. The train set consists of four items: a steam bird on eccentric wheels engine with a whistle that works, a tender, a passenger carriage and a freight in the version of “Fink 1812ex”, from 1920. wagon. The roof of the passenger carriage lifts off. The Eisba was produced in fairly small quantities until 1934. “Pickspatz” the sparrow was the most successful pull-along toy of 1919, when more than 10,000 units of this brightly-coloured bird were sold in the various available sizes.

Two more birds were added 1920, a fi nch and a tit, although these were only available in a height of 12 cm. A dachshund on eccentric wheels and a rabbit on wheels were also new to the range, and proved to be extremely popular – especially the rabbit as a seasonal item at Easter. The brightly-painted rabbit was also available for a short time as a team with the matching carriage.

Expert info: The 1921 novelties in The quantities given in the Steiff archives are always extremely children’s sports items. interesting, although in the case of wooden toys in particular often do not represent the actual presence on today’s collectors’ market. Unlike the stuff ed animals, wooden toys were often used outdoors and so were exposed e.g. to the elements. This explains why wooden items are so much more diffi cult to fi nd today than the stuff ed animals that were made in similar quantities.

However, one of the most important novelties in 1920 was the child’s scooter. Made in two versions, the Skiro and the Skirit, it heralded an important era in wood production: children’s sports vehicles. Over the course of the years, more than two dozen different children’s scooters were made.

One innovation in 1921 was a horse and cart: an intricately created painted horse and the “Sandkar” cart. The name already indicates that this toy was intended for the sandpit. The horse and cart, which were also available individually, were made in a total of four different sizes. They are extremely rare today because the horse’s legs are very thin, and therefore quite delicate when used outdoors for long periods of time.

New additions to the children’s sports vehicles in 1921 were the Eidex, Teddykar and Pegasus. These vehicles are highly intricate, and the Pegasus horse in particular is a masterpiece of the art of wooden toy-making. Only a few of these large toys are known to have survived today, and in fact only the Eidex, a fl at cart that was used as a summer sled, has been offered at auction in recent years. And yet these high-quality sports items were not as expensive as you might imagine. In fact, in the 1920s, the 75-cm Eidex cost the same as a 46-cm Teddy bear.

The children’s sports vehicles were again extended in “Sandkar” cart with 1922 when the fi rst tricycle, the “Bubirad”, was added to horse “in use”, 1921. the range. The catalogue of new items described it as a “Tricycle with a sprung saddle and footrests for smaller children. Solidly constructed from the best steamed beech wood to cope with even the toughest conditions”.

This was also the year that a very special version of the children’s sports items appeared. The “Jungfl ug 7850” was an aeroplane version of a tricycle that had two wheels on the front axle and only one on the rear, just like a real aeroplane.

The sand carts, which were introduced as novelties in 1926, are especially popular with collectors. Initially available as the hunting dog cart “Jagwag” in two sizes (17 cm and 25 cm), the “Pipwag 3815”, “Bullywag 3818” and “Haswag 3817” were added after 1927, but only in the small versions. the large chest tag. The chest tag in the version of before 1943 is absolutely typical of the time, and in fact these tags were still used until around 1950. The seated lion is also to be found in the 1949 catalogue. The description tells us he is a “Young lion, sitting, light brown silk plush, with spots, moving head”. The young lion is only listed in the 17 cm size and as item no. 3617. Animals were only produced in synthetic silk plush for a very short time after the war, and they are among our rarer versions. The plain button, which these animals both still have, was also only used for a very short period of time, and in fact is verifi ed for the years 1947 to 1950.

The crown jewel Our collection of silk jewel-toned bears concludes with a bear fit for royalty.

Are we saving the best for last? Well, it’s hard to argue that this final Teddy in Steiff’s gemstone series is not fit for royalty! This eye-catching blue silk plush Teddy bear represents lapis lazuli, a vivid semi-precious stone that has been mined, admired, and collected for over 7,000 years. As a matter of fact, lapis lazuli was used for the eyebrows on the funeral mask of King Tutankhamen!

The lapis lazuli stone was also ground to make natural ultramarine - the best and most costly of all blue pigments used for painting during the Renaissance period. The finest artists used ultramarine in their works, often on paintings representing the Virgin Mary and other religious icons. The well-known Vermeer painting, Girl With A Pearl Earring, from 1665, features a striking blue headscarf, which derives its outstanding colour from ground lapis lazuli.

This exceptional blue Steiff Teddy bear, which will be produced in an edition size of 2,000, follows in the footsteps of the company’s highly collectible amethyst, ruby, and onyx editions. Like his siblings, lapis lazuli Teddy is five ways jointed and has traditional Steiff proportions. His shiny eyes and matching blue hand embroidered nose give him a noble yet playful expression - like a perfect little prince. And his crystal “Button in Ear”, imitation lapis lazuli pendant, and blue and silver SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS decorated paw pads highlight his sparkling personality. Make this lapis lazuli Teddy bear the crown jewel in your Steiff collection this year!
