The award-winning museum was opened by self- confessed teddy bear enthusiast and well known broadcaster Gyles Brandreth and his wife Michele, on 4th July 1988. Since then, this popular little museum has gone from strength to strength in one of England’s most celebrated towns. Stratford-upon-Avon attracts five million tourists annually and visitors to the Teddy Bear Museum have ranged from royalty to Tony Blair’s bear, Lynton, who recently spent his summer holidays at the Museum. The collection, personally put together by Brandreth, numbers a thousand bears and related items. It is to be sold as a going concern, along with the Tudor building (once the property of King Henry VIII) that has been its home for the last 18 years. “The Museum has come of age and it’s now time for us to find new owners for the museum and its unique collection. Our children are all grown-up and my work commitments mean that I simply don’t have the time to give it the care and attention it deserves. We want to find new owners for the Museum who will love it as much as we do and see it go from strength to strength.” Said Gyles Brandreth Highlights of the collection include several early Steiff bears, the earliest being Growler, a much- sought-after Steiff rod-bear, circa 1904.

The board also wants a traffic signal installed at the intersection of Middle Road and Fleetwood Drive, the site of an October traffic fatality involving a pedestrian. The intersection has been the scene of other accidents, according to school o fficials. The problem is that the board would Matawan residents Robert Ziegler (I) and Dominick Jiosi, who were both retired, say they had to take mainte­ like the township to take the lead in pur­ nance jobs at the Matawan Train Station in order to pay their increasing property taxes.     In 1906, Teddy Bear Was Included In The Oxford Dictionary On September 9th, National Teddy Bear Day honors the history of one of childhood’s favorite toys. We have all had a special cuddly teddy as a child. Some of us still have our teddy bear from our childhood. Whether or not you still have your childhood teddy, the day is a perfect time to celebrate your childhood friend! In 1902, American President Theodore Roosevelt refused to shoot a bear cub while hunting in Mississippi. This incident made national news. Clifford Berryman published a cartoon of the event in the Washington Post on November 16th, 1902. The caricature became an instant classic. The Berryman cartoon of Teddy Roosevelt and the cub inspired New York store owner Morris Michtom to create a new toy. Morris Michtom wrote President Roosevelt to ask permission to name the new toy a “Teddy Bear.” Big Bird from Sesame Street had a Teddy Bear named Radar. The lasagna loving cat celebrated on Garfield the Cat Day armed himself with Pooky, his lovable scapegoat. The British invasion of Teddy Bears includes Winnie-the-Pooh and Paddington. In 1981, the Care Bears first became greeting cards. Not long after, they launched into television and toy history. Another Muppet character we must mention is Fozzie Bear. The lovable and comedic bear endlessly perseveres with one-liners, slapstick and musical comedy. 1899 – In Germany, the first stuffed bear was created by Margarete Steiff, who registered 23 patents for her design. 40% of teddy sales are for adults, and a quarter of us still has our childhood companion.

    Notes on the Exhibition Passage One DIANE ARBUS Self-Portrait with Camera February 1945 [Figures 1.11 –1.13] Diane Arbus, in this small photograph, is a woman of twenty-two years old. She was born in 1923 in New York City, to an upper-middle-class Jewish family, and died by her own hand in 1971.1 The picture, though taken ten years before she studied photography with Lisette Model (from 1955 to 1957), clearly identifies her as a photographer. Arbus ultimately became a pivotal person in the history of twentieth-century documentary photography. In this photograph, she has made a composition of herself in partnership with her large Deardorff & Sons camera, a gift from her husband, Allan Arbus. Arbus has used her camera to capture the moment of looking at herself in the mirror of her parents’ bathroom. She is not peering into the camera’s lens but rather at her reflection. The picture is one of several photographs Arbus took of herself in order to stay connected to her husband once he had been sent to Burma during World War II. The photograph documents yet another bond. On April 3, 1945, Doon, the first of two daughters, was born. Since 1971, Doon has administered the rights to her mother’s work. There is an additional historical connection, by virtue of coinciding dates, which suggests a link of two Jewish lives in contrasting circumstances. Across the Atlantic, Anne Frank, a Jewish child born in 1929 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, fled with her family to the Netherlands in 1933, when she was four years old.

Personally put together by British TV broadcaster and politician Gyles Brandreth, the collection comprises around 2,000 bears, including many extremely rare and valuable items such as the earliest bear in the sale, Growler, a much-sought-after Steiff rod-bear, circa 1904 (estimate: £8,000-12,000). The sale will also include props, sets, scenery and artefacts from the Museum displays. When Gyles Brandreth and his wife Michele, opened the Museum on 4th July 1988, CBS News said, “It's world famous and deserves to be!” Of the decision to sell, Brandreth says: “The Museum has been visited by a million people and has come of age. It's been voted by the Department for Culture, Media, and Sport as one of the icons of England. It’s now time for us to find new owners for this unique collection. Our children are all grown-up and my work commitments mean that I simply don’t have the time to give the bears the care and attention they deserve.
