INTRODUCTION: NUMBERS 22:41 • In Chapter 22, Balak has hired Balaam to curse Israel • God won’t allow Balaam to curse Israel but Balak doesn’t take no for an answer... • In the morning, Balak takes Balaam to the high places where the Moabites worshipped Baal and from there he could see the vastness of the people of Israel • Balaam attempts to curse Israel, but he can’t...

Numbers 22:41–23:6 (NKJV) 41 So it was, the next day, that Balak took Balaam and brought him up to the high places of Baal, that from there he might observe the extent of the people. 23 Then Balaam said to Balak, “Build seven altars for me here, and prepare for me here seven bulls and seven rams.” 2 And Balak did just as Balaam had spoken, and Balak and Balaam offered a bull and a ram on each altar. 3 Then Balaam said to Balak, “Stand by your burnt offering, and I will go; perhaps the LORD will come to meet me, and whatever He shows me I will tell you.” So he went to a desolate height. 4 And God met Balaam, and he said to Him, “I have prepared the seven altars, and I have offered on each altar a bull and a ram.” 5 Then the LORD put a word in Balaam’s mouth, and said, “Return to Balak, and thus you shall speak.” 6 So he returned to him, and there he was, standing by his burnt offering, he and all the princes of Moab.

• No where in scripture does God accept an offering from any other offering, except the altar at the Tabernacle • Thus, this was a Pagan practice and notice what Balaam is doing • He instructs Balak to build 7 altars and prepare 7 rams and 7 bulls • He offers them on each of the 7 altars • Then Balaam tells Balak, stand by your burnt offering... in pagan rituals, the one offering the sacrifices would stand by their offering and pray while the holy man would attempt to make contact with the spirits • NOW... Balaam still believes He can manipulate God • God requires sacrifices of bulls and rams... so I will offer him 7 altars with bulls and rams and perhaps this will appease this God and God will appear • When God appears, God will give him a sign and he will interpret the message for Balak

• Guess what... God appears and He puts a word in Balaam’s mouth

Numbers 23:7–12 (NKJV) 7 And he took up his oracle and said: “Balak the king of Moab has brought me from Aram, From the mountains of the east. ‘Come, curse Jacob for me, And come, denounce Israel!’ 8 “How shall I curse whom God has not cursed? And how shall I denounce whom the LORD has not denounced? 9 For from the top of the rocks I see him, And from the hills I behold him; There! A people dwelling alone, Not reckoning itself among the nations. 10 “Who can count the dust of Jacob, Or number one-fourth of Israel? Let me die the death of the righteous, And let my end be like his!” 11 Then Balak said to Balaam, “What have you done to me? I took you to curse my enemies, and look, you have blessed them bountifully!” 12 So he answered and said, “Must I not take heed to speak what the LORD has put in my mouth?”

• Balaam recounts the events... • Balak brought Balaam from Aram to curse Israel • But God made it clear to Balaam... you will only say the words I put in your mouth... and it’s clear to Balaam... • God has no intention of cursing Israel • God has blessed Israel... they are numerous like the desert sand • Now this upsets Balak... what have you done? • I hired you to curse them not bless them • Balaam reminds Balak... I can only say the words God puts into my mouth

Numbers 23:13–17 (NKJV) 13 Then Balak said to him, “Please come with me to another place from which you may see them; you shall see only the outer part of them, and shall not see them all; curse them for me from there.” 14 So he brought him to the field of Zophim, to the top of Pisgah, and built seven altars, and offered a bull and a ram on each altar. 15 And he said to Balak, “Stand here by your burnt offering while I meet the LORD over there.” 16 Then the LORD met Balaam, and put a word in his mouth, and said, “Go back to Balak, and thus you shall speak.” 17 So he came to him, and there he was, standing by his burnt offering, and the princes of Moab were with him. And Balak said to him, “What has the LORD spoken?”

Balak takes Balaam to another site • He takes them to “the field of the lookouts” located on the peak of the summit of Mount Nebo where guards watched to see if invaders were approaching (Moses would die here) • He assumes that a change in location will change God’s mind • It’s a smaller group of Israelites... perhaps God won’t care • They do the same thing... build 7 altars and offer 7 rams and bulls on each altar and afterwards Balaam goes to receive a word from God

Numbers 23:18–26 (NKJV) 18 Then he took up his oracle and said: “Rise up, Balak, and hear! Listen to me, son of Zippor! 19 “God is not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good? 20 Behold, I have received a command to bless; He has blessed, and I cannot reverse it. 21 “He has not observed iniquity in Jacob, Nor has He seen wickedness in Israel. The LORD his God is with him, And the shout of a King is among them. 22 God brings them out of Egypt; He has strength like a wild ox. 23 “For there is no sorcery against Jacob, Nor any divination against Israel. It now must be said of Jacob And of Israel, ‘Oh, what God has done!’ 24 Look, a people rises like a lioness, And lifts itself up like a lion; It shall not lie down until it devours the prey, And drinks the blood of the slain.” 25 Then Balak said to Balaam, “Neither curse them at all, nor bless them at all!” 26 So Balaam answered and said to Balak, “Did I not tell you, saying, ‘All that the LORD speaks, that I must do’?”

• First, God has a message for Balak... • Listen, I know what you’re doing... I’m not like you... I don’t lie, I don’t change my mind (repent) and I do what I say I will do • Besides... I love Israel • Then Balaam has a message for Balak • I have been commanded by God to bless and I cannot reverse it • God gives Balak an education through Balaam as to how He views Israel • God is with Israel, God doesn’t see any wickedness in Israel • When Jacob should have cursed Simeon and Levi for wiping out the city of Shechem... he only cursed their anger, not them • When Jacob tricked Esau and deserved to be cursed, God blessed him

• No curse through witchcraft will work against Israel because they are God’s testimony... look at what God has done • How can I invoke God’s wrath against them when God isn’t angry with them... this is something we need to understand about God! • Balak responds by saying... if you can’t curse them don’t saying anything... now that’s a reversal... usually you say if you can’t say anything nice don’t say anything at all • Balak is saying if you can’t say anything bad don’t say anything at all • Balaam reminds Balak... I told you, I can only say what God says to say

Numbers 23:27–30 (NKJV) 27 Then Balak said to Balaam, “Please come, I will take you to another place; perhaps it will please God that you may curse them for me from there.” 28 So Balak took Balaam to the top of Peor, that overlooks the wasteland. 29 Then Balaam said to Balak, “Build for me here seven altars, and prepare for me here seven bulls and seven rams.” 30 And Balak did as Balaam had said, and offered a bull and a ram on every altar.

Balak has another idea... • Let’s try a third location... that’s the definition of insanity... doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results • Balak takes Balaam to the peak of Peor, overlooking the wastelands where Israel would later succumb to idolatry (Baal) • So Balaam goes along with Balak... Balak is working all the angles

Numbers 24:1–9 (NKJV) 24 Now when Balaam saw that it pleased the LORD to bless Israel, he did not go as at other times, to seek to use sorcery, but he set his face toward the wilderness. 2 And Balaam raised his eyes, and saw Israel encamped according to their tribes; and the Spirit of God came upon him. 3 Then he took up his oracle and said: “The utterance of Balaam the son of Beor, The utterance of the man whose eyes are opened, 4 The utterance of him who hears the words of God, Who sees the vision of the Almighty, Who falls down, with eyes wide open: 5 “How lovely are your tents, O Jacob! Your dwellings, O Israel! 6 Like valleys that stretch out, Like gardens by the riverside, Like aloes planted by the LORD, Like cedars beside the waters. 7 He shall pour water from his buckets, And his seed shall be in many waters. “His king shall be higher than Agag, And his kingdom shall be exalted. 8 “God brings him out of Egypt; He has strength like a wild ox; He

• This Balaam knows... he doesn’t even ask... instead he sets his face towards the wilderness where Israel’s unbelief kept them from entering into the Promised Land • He begins to go into his chant... the utterance of Balaam the son of Beor, the utterance of the man whose eyes are opened, the utterance of him who hears the words of god, who sees the vision of the Almighty • God reveals Himself to Balaam and he falls down and blesses Israel • How lovely are your tents, Your King is higher than Agag, His Kingdom will be exalted, His Kingdom unstoppable, God brings you out of Egypt, He will consume His enemies... • And he ends his blessing with... blessed is he who blesses you, and cursed is he who curses you and this does not go over well

Numbers 24:10–14 (NKJV) 10 Then Balak’s anger was aroused against Balaam, and he struck his hands together; and Balak said to Balaam, “I called you to curse my enemies, and look, you have bountifully blessed them these three times! 11 Now therefore, flee to your place. I said I would greatly honor you, but in fact, the LORD has kept you back from honor.” 12 So Balaam said to Balak, “Did I not also speak to your messengers whom you sent to me, saying, 13 ‘If Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not go beyond the word of the LORD, to do good or bad of my own will. What the LORD says, that I must speak’? 14 And now, indeed, I am going to my people. Come, I will advise you what this people will do to your people in the latter days.”

• Balak says... that’s it, you’re done... you blew your chance... the LORD you serve doesn’t want you to be rich and famous... • Go back where you came from • Balaam says... I told you, it doesn’t matter how much money you give me I can only say what the LORD says to say. • But then he says... I’m going back, but first I’ll advise you on what this people will do to your people in the latter days

Numbers 24:15–25 (NKJV) 15 So he took up his oracle and said: “The utterance of Balaam the son of Beor, And the utterance of the man whose eyes are opened; 16 The utterance of him who hears the words of God, And has the knowledge of the Most High, Who sees the vision of the Almighty, Who falls down, with eyes wide open: 17 “I see Him, but not now; I behold Him, but not near; A Star shall come out of Jacob; A Scepter shall rise out of Israel, And batter the brow of Moab, And destroy all the sons of tumult. 18 “And Edom shall be a possession; Seir also, his enemies, shall be a possession, While Israel does valiantly. 19 Out of Jacob One shall have dominion, And destroy the remains of the city.” 20 Then he looked on Amalek, and he took up his oracle and said: “Amalek was first among the nations, But shall be last until he perishes.” 21 Then he looked on the Kenites, and he took up his oracle and said: “Firm is your dwelling place, And your nest is set in the rock; 22 Nevertheless Kain shall be burned. How long until Asshur carries you away captive?” 23 Then he took up his oracle and said: “Alas! Who shall live when God does this? 24 But ships shall come from the coasts of Cyprus, And they shall afflict Asshur and afflict Eber, And so shall Amalek, until he perishes.” 25 So Balaam rose and departed and returned to his place; Balak also went his way.

Now this is an interesting prophecy • It comes from a pagan prophet, but it is absolutely a revelation from God • So what does this tell me? • Pagan prophets can hear from God and prophesy truth • Just because a “prophet” gets it right... doesn’t mean they are of God • Just because a “prophet” says they are of God, doesn’t mean they hear from God... they could be speaking from their own soul • So what’s the difference? • Accuracy. A true prophet is never wrong, a true prophet obeys God’s command and a true prophet demonstrates the love of God • When asked about Gene Scott, Chuck simply responded... false teacher • When asked why? Chuck simply said... no love • I look for these 3 things... accuracy, obedience and love... the greatest being love... I don’t see these 3 things... then they are a false prophet • Balaam knows he no longer has the confidence of Balak • He knows he can’t curse Israel, but he offers to advise the King • He gives a prophecy that will be fulfilled in the future (the later days) which is always a phrase pointing to the Messianic Kingdom THROUGH THE BIBLE / NUMBERS © 2020 Holland Davis ______NUMBERS

• He did see Israel conquering Moab, but not any time soon • The time Israel will conquer Moab will be marked by a star, a King that will arise out of Jacob with authority (speaking of King David) who still kill the princes of Moab and rule and reign over the land • Balaam then prophesies concerning Edom... Edom, located at Mount Seir, will be possessed by Israel • Then Balaam prophesies concerning Amalek... Amalek was the first enemy to attack Israel and their destruction will be an everlasting destruction • Then Balaam prophesies concerning the descendants of Jethro, the Kenites... they will be taken into captivity by Assyria, but they will survive • Then Balaam prophesies concerning Assyria... Assyria will exile and dislocate every nation in his empire • After Sennacherib, the Romans (from the land of the Kittites) will afflict the empires that succeed Assyria and extend it’s empire to the Eastern side of the Euphrates • BUT... in the end Rome will perish forever • After Balaam gives these prophecies they part ways and Balak enlists the Moabites in executing Balaam’s plan for causing the Israelistes to sin by sending their daughters to entice the Israeli men.

Numbers 25:1–3 (NKJV) 25 Now Israel remained in Acacia Grove, and the people began to commit harlotry with the women of Moab. 2 They invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate and bowed down to their gods. 3 So Israel was joined to Baal of Peor, and the anger of the LORD was aroused against Israel.

• According to the Rabbis, the Moabite girls invited the people to the feast-offerings of their gods • They report that 157,200 people ate the offerings and worshipped Baal on the urging of the Moabite girls • Whenever a Moabite girl would seduce an Israeli man, when they were about to have relations the Moabite girl would pull out an idol and tell the man to worship it first • “Baal Peor” is translated “Master of Baring” and they would worship this idol by baring themselves and defecating in front of the idol • Thus, Israel was joined to Baal of Peor through the seduction of the Moabite women and the anger of the LORD was aroused against Israel THROUGH THE BIBLE / NUMBERS © 2020 Holland Davis ______NUMBERS

Numbers 25:4–9 (NKJV) 4 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Take all the leaders of the people and hang the offenders before the LORD, out in the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may turn away from Israel.” 5 So Moses said to the judges of Israel, “Every one of you kill his men who were joined to Baal of Peor.” 6 And indeed, one of the children of Israel came and presented to his brethren a Midianite woman in the sight of Moses and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who were weeping at the door of the tabernacle of meeting. 7 Now when Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose from among the congregation and took a javelin in his hand; 8 and he went after the man of Israel into the tent and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her body. So the plague was stopped among the children of Israel. 9 And those who died in the plague were twenty-four thousand.

• Israel’s idolatry unleashed a plague against them that infected the innocent and the guilty... sounds like America! • In order to stop the plague, God said to Moses... gather the leaders as judges to judge those who worshipped the idol • Normally you need 2 or 3 witnesses to establish a matter, but the guilty parties sinned privately in the Moabite tents which resulted in a plague • Moses instructs the judges of Israel to kill anyone in his tribe who joined themselves to Baal of Peor through this seduction • One of the men decided to protest • He brought a Midianite woman (Moses married a Midianite) and challenged Moses... what’s so bad with this woman... Moses married a Midianite... why are we being punished? • The Rabbi’s say Moses couldn’t act... he couldn’t act because if he said the reason why it was illegal to have relations with the women was because of their ethnicity... (Moabite) • Then Moses was guilty because he married a Midianite • So Moses had to recuse himself from the case because a judge can’t judge a case in which he has a personal stake • Thus Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron took a javelin and thrust it through the man and the Midianite woman and the plague stopped • But only after 24,000 died.

Numbers 25:10–15 (NKJV) 10 Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 11 “Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned back My wrath from the children of Israel, because he was zealous with My zeal among them, so that I did not consume the children of Israel in My zeal. 12 Therefore say, ‘Behold, I give to him My covenant of peace; 13 and it shall be to him and his descendants after him a covenant of an everlasting priesthood, because he was zealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Israel.’ ” 14 Now the name of the Israelite who was killed, who was killed with the Midianite woman, was Zimri the son of Salu, a leader of a father’s house among the Simeonites. 15 And the name of the Midianite woman who was killed was Cozbi the daughter of Zur; he was head of the people of a father’s house in Midian.

• God elevates Phinehas by giving him credit for turning back God’s wrath • Thus God makes a Covenant of Peace with Phinehas • The Covenant is for him and his descendants and it is a covenant of an everlasting priesthood • God reveals the name of the Israeli man who was killed with the Midianite woman... Zimri the son of Salu who was known according to the rabbi’s for his violent nature • The Midianite woman was Cozbi and both came from aristocratic families... both families were leaders amongst the people • The reason why this is mentioned is to note that it doesn’t matter what your stature in life is... if you dishonor God, you will be judged • No one is above God’s law

Numbers 25:16–18 (NKJV) 16 Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 17 “Harass the Midianites, and attack them; 18 for they harassed you with their schemes by which they seduced you in the matter of Peor and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a leader of Midian, their sister, who was killed in the day of the plague because of Peor.”

• This is an interesting situation • The Moabite women are the ones who seduced Israel, but God instructs Moses to harass the Midianites? • Another thought is God didn’t hold the Moabites responsible because they were simply acting like Moabites... • The Israeli men that should have known better. • But the Midianites harassed Israel by having the daughter of a Midianite Prince (Kozbi) participating in an accusation against Moses • The Midianites had no fight with Israel and yet sought to harm them out of pure hatred and that is why they were harassed.

Numbers 26:1–4 (NKJV) 26 And it came to pass, after the plague, that the LORD spoke to Moses and Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, saying: 2 “Take a census of all the congregation of the children of Israel from twenty years old and above, by their fathers’ houses, all who are able to go to war in Israel.” 3 So Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with them in the plains of Moab by the Jordan, across from Jericho, saying: 4 “Take a census of the people from twenty years old and above, just as the LORD commanded Moses and the children of Israel who came out of the land of Egypt.”

• God is preparing the nation to drive out the enemy in the Promised Land • He commands a census to determine who is able to fight

Numbers 26:5–65 (NKJV) 5 Reuben was the firstborn of Israel. The children of Reuben were: of Hanoch, the family of the Hanochites; of Pallu, the family of the Palluites; 6 of Hezron, the family of the Hezronites; of Carmi, the family of the Carmites. 7 These are the families of the Reubenites: those who were numbered of them were forty-three thousand seven hundred and thirty. 8 And the son of Pallu was Eliab. 9 The sons of Eliab were Nemuel, Dathan, and Abiram. These are the Dathan and Abiram, representatives of the congregation, who contended against Moses and Aaron in the company of Korah, when they contended against the LORD; 10 and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up together with Korah when that company died, when the fire devoured two hundred and fifty men; and they became a sign. 11 Nevertheless the children of Korah did not die. 12 The sons of Simeon according to their families were: of Nemuel, the family of the Nemuelites; of Jamin, the family of the Jaminites; of Jachin, the family of the Jachinites; 13 of Zerah, the family of the Zarhites; of Shaul, the family of the Shaulites. 14 These are the families of the Simeonites: twenty-two thousand two hundred.

And Kohath begot Amram. 59 The name of Amram’s wife was Jochebed the daughter of Levi, who was born to Levi in Egypt; and to Amram she bore Aaron and Moses and their sister Miriam. 60 To Aaron were born Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar. 61 And Nadab and Abihu died when they offered profane fire before the LORD. 62 Now those who were numbered of them were twenty-three thousand, every male from a month old and above; for they were not numbered among the other children of Israel, because there was no inheritance given to them among the children of Israel. 63 These are those who were numbered by Moses and Eleazar the priest, who numbered the children of Israel in the plains of Moab by the Jordan, across from Jericho. 64 But among these there was not a man of those who were numbered by Moses and Aaron the priest when they numbered the children of Israel in the Wilderness of Sinai. 65 For the LORD had said of them, “They shall surely die in the wilderness.” So there was not left a man of them, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun.
