The full report looks at the six themes created under the ‘Urban Park’ theme and provides a spatial picture of that theme accompanied with the key assets and opportunities for that theme. Foreword to be provided by Roger Lawrence The Strategic Context Quality of the Black Country environment is one of the four primary objectives of the Black Country Vision that has driven the preparation of the Black Country Strategy for Growth and Competitiveness through the Black Country Study process. The environment is critical to the health and well-being of future residents, workers and visitors to the Black Country. It is also both a major contributor to, and measure of, wider goals for sustainable development and living as well as being significantly important to the economy of the region. The importance and the desire for transforming the Black Country environment has been reinforced through the evidence gathering and analysis of the Black Country Study process as both an aspiration in its own right and as a necessity to achieve economic prosperity. Evidence from the Economic and Housing Studies concluded that ‘the creation of new environments will be crucial for attracting investment from high value-added firms’ and similarly that ‘a high quality healthy environment is a priority for ‘knowledge workers’. The Economic Strategy puts ‘Environmental Transformation’ alongside Education & Skills as the fundamental driver to achieve Black Country economic renaissance and prosperity for its people.

    The Birds of Herefordshire 2015 Herefordshire Ornithological Club Annual Report Jackdaws and Hereford cattle at Much Marcle in March 2015 (Photo: Mick Colquhoun) Editorial This is the 65th annual report of the ‘Birds of Herefordshire’, the Herefordshire Ornithological Club’s (HOC) annual publication for 2015, which I hope you will enjoy reading. During the year a total of 172 species were recorded, summary details and highlights of which are presented in the systematic list section on pages 30 – 98, for which I wish to thank the species authors. An alphabetic index of species is included on pages 146 – 147 to help readers locate individual species information and a gazetteer of place names mentioned in the species accounts is provided on pages 142 – 145. The county list of species (now numbering 281) was boosted by the sighting of a Spotted Sandpiper, a county ‘first’, at Wellington Gravel Pits in May 2015 (see article on pages 28 – 29), and seven other rarities with 20 or fewer previous county records also made an appearance in Herefordshire during the year: Red-crested Pochard, Marsh Harrier, Turnstone, Temminck’s Stint, Red-necked Phalarope, Caspian Gull and Common Redpoll. A tremendous amount of effort has gone into validating the records of rarities on the county list during the past year and the review article on pages 12 – 18 makes enlightening reading and provides a definitive list and dates of sightings for all 94 rarity species with 20 or fewer records. The large increase in the number of bird records received in 2014, compared with previous years, continued in 2015 with a similar 46,000 records being utilised in compiling this annual report.

TR along the easy footpath, over the footbridge (below Masefield’s Knapp), for ⅔ mile, over road bridge to information board. Cross road. TL under railway bridge. In 40m TR over stile up R edge of orchard to crest, to find gap in top right corner. TR at path junction. Go through kissing gate and TR away from Frith Wood House. Follow path further R over railway in front of house to reach. 2. Knapp Lane. Bear R and immediately L along “No through road” at Upperfields. When reaching a seat, go ahead with fence on right, rather than descending to R, staying ahead downhill between green bench and Dog Hill Information Board at path junction. Leaves mostly basal; leaf sheath closed, auricles absent; leaf blade lanceolate to linear, flat, usually channeled, margin long white ciliate. Inflorescences cymose, umbellate, umbel-like, corymbose, or paniculate, sometimes condensed into heads. Flowers often solitary, subtended by a scarious bract and enclosed at base by 2 short bracteoles; bracteoles usually lacerate or denticulate at margin. Perianth segments 6. Stamens 6, usually shorter than perianth; filaments thin; anthers oblong to linear. Ovary 1-loculed; ovules 3, erect from a basal, very short placenta. Style short. Capsule 3-valved. Seeds 3, oblong, indistinctly reticulate, often with a basal or apical appendage (caruncle). About 75 species: mainly in cool regions of both hemispheres, in tropical regions restricted to high elevations; 16 species (six endemic) in China.
