  • 7 Tips from Philip Seymour Hoffman, Gandolfini, & Other
Robert W. Wood THE TAX LAWYER TAXES | 2/23/2014 @ 8:09PM 7 Tips From Philip Seymour Hoffman, Gandolfini, & Other Celeb Estates Storied estates can be salacious (Anna Nicole Smith) or amusing (Leona Helmsley’s $12M trust for her dog Trouble), but most are dull. Yet unexpected celebrity deaths like Philip Seymour Hoffman’s at 46 spark debate and impart lessons. Ditto from James Gandolfini, Amy Winehouse, Heath Ledger, and others. Although Mr. Hoffman had three children with Marianne O’Donnell, they were unmarried. Plus, he mentioned only one child in his will, not three. Amy Winehouse didn’t even have a will, so we don’t know what she would have wanted. Under the law, her parents inherited while her ex-husband got nothing. Heath Ledger’s five year old will gave his parents and 3 sisters his $20M estate, failing to mention Michelle Williams or their child. And after Mr. Gandolfini died at 51, reports said his will clumsily sent $30M of his $70M to the IRS. The stories should make tax advisers go to the mattresses. Key lessons? 1. Keep It Private. Incredibly, Hoffman, Ledger and Gandolfini, all ended up with wills in probate. Probate is public, expensive, time consuming and unnecessary. Like Amy Winehouse, It is worse not to even have a will (after dying without one, singer John Denver’s family spent six years in court). But a will still has to go through the courts. For very little money, a revocable trust disposes of your assets outside court. You still do a simple pour-over will.

  • 275. – Part One
    275. – PART ONE 275. Clifford (1994) Okay, here’s the deal: I don’t know you, you don’t know me, but if you are anywhere near a television right now I need you to stop whatever it is that you’re doing and go watch “Clifford” on HBO Max. This is another film that has a 10% score on Rotten Tomatoes which just leads me to believe that all of the critics who were popular in the nineties didn’t have a single shred of humor in any of their non-existent funny bones. I loved this movie when I was seven, and I love it even more when I’m thirty-three. It’s genius. Martin Short (who at the time was forty-four) plays a ten-year-old hyperactive nightmare child from hell. I mean it, this kid might actually be the devil. He is straight up evil, conniving, manipulative and all-told probably causes no less than ten million dollars-worth of property damage. And, again, the plot is so simple – he just wants to go to Dinosaur World. There are so many comedy films with such complicated plots and motivations for their characters, but the simplistic genius of “Clifford” is just this – all this kid wants on the entire planet is to go to Dinosaur World. That’s it. The movie starts with him and his parents on an plane to Hawaii for a business trip, and Clifford knows that Dinosaur Land is in Los Angeles, therefore he causes so much of a ruckus that the plane has to make an emergency landing.

  • Movie Draft: Below the Belt
POOP READING Movie Draft: Below the Belt Alas, with Bale directing the project and shepherding it by Jameson Simmons through every stage of its tortured development, this tone-deafness extends beyond the lead character. Dialogue You often hear of film studios indulging a star's will sometimes switch from serious to goofy and back in a character-based "passion project" in order to garner their single breath. • Top 30 Films
March 2013 Top 30 Films By Eddie Ivermee Top 30 films as chosen by me, they may not be perfect or to everyone’s taste. Like all good art however they inspire debate. Why Do I Love Movies? Eddie Ivermee For that feeling you get when the lights get dim in the cinema Because of getting to see Heath Ledger on the big screen for the final time in The Dark Knight Because of Quentin Tarentino’s knack for rip roaring dialogue Because of the invention of the steadicam For saving me from the drudgery of nightly weekly TV sessions Because of Malik’s ability to make life seem more beautiful than it really is Because of Brando and Pacino together in The Godfather Because of the amazing combination of music and image, e.g. music in Jaws Because of the invention of other worlds, see Avatar, Star Wars, Alien etc. For making us laugh, cry, sad, happy, scared all in equal measure. For the ending of the Shawshank Redemption For allowing Jim Carey lose during the 1990’s For arranging a coffee date on screen of De Niro an Pacino For allowing Righteous Kill to go straight to DVD so I could turn it off For taking me back in time with classics like Psycho, Wizard of Oz ect For making dreams become reality see E.T, The Goonies, Spiderman, Superman For allowing Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender, Tom Hardy and Joesph Gordon Levitt ply their trade on screen for our amusement. Because of making people Die Hard as Rambo strikes with a Lethal Weapon because he is a Predator who is also Rocky.

  • Shattered Glass
Movie Kit Shattered Glass Year of Release: 2003 Rating: PG-13 Length: 94 min English level: Medium Director: Billy Ray Starring: Hayden Christensen, Peter Sarsgaard, Chloe Sevigny Themes: Journalistic Integrity, Media Literacy, Anti-Corruption Warning/General Advisory Includes some profane language, brief drug use Shattered Glass is the true story of a personable young journalist’s rapid rise to becoming a top feature writer at The New Republic, a popular American magazine with many articles on American politics and culture. Twenty-something year old Stephen Glass’ notoriety grew through his ability to find entertaining human interest angles to what otherwise may have just been typical news stories. His career possibilities seemed limitless until it was discovered that Glass was guilty of journalistic fraud, where 27 of his 41 published stories were either partially or completely made up. Additional Movie Background In the mid-1990s, Stephen Glass was making a name for himself by writing a series of topical and entertaining feature articles for The New Republic magazine. When his stories received increased scrutiny, it was discovered that he made up sources, quotations and sometimes even entire situations for many of his stories. His credibility destroyed, Glass was dismissed by The New Republic and his career in journalism was finished. One of Glass’ most successful stories, also featured in this movie, was about how technology companies try and prevent hackers from damaging their products. In his piece “Hack Heaven,” Glass wrote about how a teenage hacker Ian Restil was given a lucrative job by software company Jukt Micronics so that he would stop hacking into the company’s security system.
