BANK Abstract: Nomenclature must be constructed in accordance with agreed rules. The International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature was founded in Leiden in September 1895. It not only produced a Code of nomencla- ture, that was refined over the years, but also provided arbitration and advice service, all with the aim of ensur- ing that every animal has one unique and universally accepted name. Name changes reduce the efficiency of biological nomenclature as a reference system. The Code was established to precisely specify the circumstances under which a name must be changed, and in what way. Name changes are only permitted if it is necessitated by a correction of nomenclatural error, by a change in classification, or by a correction of a past misidentification. Also authorships are regulated by the Code, mainly by Article 50. In a recent paper by WELTER-SCHULTES this Article is interpreted in a way that is different from previous interpretations by the zoological (malacological) community, leading to major changes in authorships. It is here argued that his alternative interpretations (1) are not in line with the spirit of the Code, and (2) will not serve the stability of nomenclature. It is important that interpretation and application of the existing rules be objective, consistent, and clear. The following groups of Mesozoic Caenogastropoda are discussed here: Cerithioidea and Littorinoi- dea-Rissooidea seemingly merging with each other during Triassic times; the fresh water and land snails of the Viviparoidea and Cyclophoroidea with unknown marine relatives but a Mesozoic histo• ry; the Vermetoidea, Turritelloidea and Campaniloidea with a late appearance in the Mesozoic; the Ctenoglossa with a continuous history from the Middle Palaeozoic to modern times; the Subulitoidea, Murchisonioidea and Loxonematoidea with Palaeozoic ancestors but unclear Middle Mesozoic rela• tions; the Purpurinoidea as potential ancestors and relatives of the Stromboidea, the latter suddenly appearing in the Jurassic; the Heteropoda and Vanikoroidea with possible relation to each other but very uncertain relations to the others; and the Neomesogastropoda and Neogastropoda which begin their history in the Mid Cretaceous with still rather uncertain precursors. Many studies focus on the functional drivers which have been regarded as a major force in shell evolution. There is, however, a scarcity in studies that aim at understanding shell form evolution with respect to their ontogeny. Hence, we investigated the evolution of shell form in the micro-landsnail genus Plectostoma (Diplommatinidae) from the viewpoint of shell ontogeny. We examined the aperture ontogeny profiles that describe how aperture form and growth trajectory change along the shell ontogeny, and how the aperture ontogeny profiles relate to the observed shell forms.

ALONSO'" RESUMEN Tudorella ferrugínea es un interesante prosobranquio endémico de las islas Baleares; al no ser conocido su aparato reproductor, fué situado por algunos autores en el mismo subgénero que Pomatias sulcatus,O debido a la similitud existente entre la concha y el opérculo de ambas especies. Describimos aquí por primera vez el dimorfismo sexual, el aparato repro­ ductor de ambos sexos y la rádula de T. ferruginea; a la vista de estos resul­ tados y con los obtenidos en trabajos anteriores, consideramos que el parecido existente entre T. ferruginea y P. sulcatus se debe simplemente a un fenó• meno de convergencia adaptativa. SUMMARY A interesting Prosobranchia endemic of the Baleares is Tudorella ferru­ ginea, which the genital system was unknown. Because of this and due to the similarity between the shells and between the operculums of T. ferruginea and P. sulcatus, both species was placed in the same subgenus by several authors. In the present work, we describe for the first time the sexual dimor­ phism, the genital system of both sexes and the radula of T. ferruginea. Fur­ thermore, with the results obtained in this work and with the data of a anterior publication, we consider that the similarity between T. ferruginea and P. sulca­ tus is due to a convergence adaptative phenomenon. * Departamento de Zoología; Facultad de Ciencias; Universidad de Granada. 70 M. In this small island 23 species have been found, 6 of which are Sicilian endemic taxa. Siciliaria leucophryna microinsularis n. ssp. endemic to the Isola delle Femmine (or Isola di Fuori) is described.
