Abstract: Peru is an ecologically diverse country, with 84 life zones in the Holdridge system and 18 ecological regions (including two marine). 1910 molluscan species have been recorded. The highest number corresponds to the sea: 570 gastropods, 370 bivalves, 36 cephalopods, 34 polyplacoforans, 3 monoplacophorans, 3 scaphopods and 2 aplacophorans (total 1018 species). The most diverse families are Veneridae (57spp.), Muricidae (47spp.), Collumbellidae (40 spp.) and Tellinidae (37 spp.). Biogeographically, 56 % of marine species are Panamic, 11 % Peruvian and the rest occurs in both provinces; 73 marine species are endemic to Peru. Land molluscs include 763 species, 2.54 % of the global estimate and 38 % of the South American esti- mate. The most biodiverse families are Bulimulidae with 424 spp., Clausiliidae with 75 spp. and Systrophiidae with 55 spp. In contrast, only 129 freshwater species have been reported, 35 endemics (mainly hydrobiids with 14 spp. The paper includes an overview of biogeography, ecology, use, history of research efforts and conser- vation; as well as indication of areas and species that are in greater need of study. -

La Conselleria de Medi Ambient és ben conscient que la conservació del patrimoni natural no es pot fer sense els estudis que ens han de permetre conèixer quins són els recursos sota la nostra responsabilitat i quin valor tenen. De cada vegada el gran públic coneix més quines són les espècies amenaçades i les accions per conservar-les troben ressò en els mitjans de comunicació i en la sensibilitat de la socie- tat en general. Però cal demanar-se: estam fent tot allò que és necessari per garantir la con- servació del patrimoni natural per a les generacions pròximes? Són suficients els coneixe- ments actuals d’aquest patrimoni? Quines espècies o quines poblacions són les més valuo- ses? Aquest llibre ajudarà a respondre algunes d‘aquestes preguntes. És un compromís entre la visió del científic, que sempre desitja aprofundir en l’estudi, i els gestors, que demanen amb urgència unes eines adequades per planificar les accions de conservació i avaluar-les. -

BANK Abstract: Nomenclature must be constructed in accordance with agreed rules. The International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature was founded in Leiden in September 1895. It not only produced a Code of nomencla- ture, that was refined over the years, but also provided arbitration and advice service, all with the aim of ensur- ing that every animal has one unique and universally accepted name. Name changes reduce the efficiency of biological nomenclature as a reference system. The Code was established to precisely specify the circumstances under which a name must be changed, and in what way. Name changes are only permitted if it is necessitated by a correction of nomenclatural error, by a change in classification, or by a correction of a past misidentification. Also authorships are regulated by the Code, mainly by Article 50. In a recent paper by WELTER-SCHULTES this Article is interpreted in a way that is different from previous interpretations by the zoological (malacological) community, leading to major changes in authorships. It is here argued that his alternative interpretations (1) are not in line with the spirit of the Code, and (2) will not serve the stability of nomenclature. It is important that interpretation and application of the existing rules be objective, consistent, and clear. The following groups of Mesozoic Caenogastropoda are discussed here: Cerithioidea and Littorinoi- dea-Rissooidea seemingly merging with each other during Triassic times; the fresh water and land snails of the Viviparoidea and Cyclophoroidea with unknown marine relatives but a Mesozoic histo• ry; the Vermetoidea, Turritelloidea and Campaniloidea with a late appearance in the Mesozoic; the Ctenoglossa with a continuous history from the Middle Palaeozoic to modern times; the Subulitoidea, Murchisonioidea and Loxonematoidea with Palaeozoic ancestors but unclear Middle Mesozoic rela• tions; the Purpurinoidea as potential ancestors and relatives of the Stromboidea, the latter suddenly appearing in the Jurassic; the Heteropoda and Vanikoroidea with possible relation to each other but very uncertain relations to the others; and the Neomesogastropoda and Neogastropoda which begin their history in the Mid Cretaceous with still rather uncertain precursors. Only the Subulitoidea, Murchisonioidea, Loxonematoidea and Zygopleur- oidea, and questionable Cerithioidea of the Stegocoelia type, can be traced through much of the Palaeozoic (Knight, 1931; Wenz, 1938-1944; Knight et al., 1960; Hoare & Sturgeon, 1978, 1980a, 1980b, 1981, 1985; Yoo, 1988, 1989; Bandel, 1991a; own data). -

Research on Quaternary shorelines from Mallorca. Historical background Many researchers have worked on the Quaternary deposits scattered along the littoral zones of Mallorca Island. As a consequence, there are a significant number of publications on this topic, being almost impossible to assemble a comprehensive review in a general chapter like this one. Therefore, the present paper exclusively provides a historical background on the knowledge of Mallorcan Quaternary shorelines, along with their paleontological remains and chronology. La Marmora (1834) was the first geologist writing about Quaternary deposits on Mallorca Island. This author reports the presence of sandstones (with modest fossil content) in the southern flat areas of the island and conglomerates with marine shells, resembling those of present-day beaches, in just a few places. Haime (1855) dedicates only a paragraph in his study on the Quaternary paleontology, citating 12 species. Hermite (1879) distinguishes two levels within the marine raised beaches existing to the east of Palma Bay. The lower level is composed of some conglomerates previously mentioned by Haime, containing Acanthocardia tuberculata, along with other species currently living in the Mediterranean Basin, except for the thermophilous species Strombus bubonius. -

Es descriuen jaciments paleontològics del Pleistocè superior situats en diferents indrets de la zona septentrional de Mallorca: cala Sant Vicenç, punta de Tacàritx-cap Petit, Alcanada-sa Bassa Blanca i colònia de Sant Pere-es Caló. Els jaciments de cala Sant Vicenç i d'Alcanada-sa Bassa Blanca eren inèdits fins a les hores; els dos restants no SOCIETAT D'HISTÒRIA eren inèdits tenien estudis poc acurats dels mol-luscs terrestre fòssils. El relleus NATURAL DE LES BALEARS però propers i la dinàmica litoral del darrer interglacial i darrera glaciació han jugat un paper transcendent en la formació d'aquests dipòsits constituïts bàsicament per eolianites, paleosòls i aportacions al-luvials i col·luvials. S'han realitzat seccions estratigràfiques dels diferents jaciments i s'han estudiat els mol-luscs terrestres. Els contingut mala cològic dels diferents jaciments és semblant: hi sol haver com a tàxons freqüents: Iberellus (1. balearicus o 1. eompanyonii), Tudorella ferruginea, Troclzoidea [rater, Oxychilus /entiformis i Chondrula gymnesiea. Tots són endèmics i viuen actualrnent (excepte C. gymnesiea) i constitueixen part de la fauna endèmica de Mallorca. -

Many studies focus on the functional drivers which have been regarded as a major force in shell evolution. There is, however, a scarcity in studies that aim at understanding shell form evolution with respect to their ontogeny. Hence, we investigated the evolution of shell form in the micro-landsnail genus Plectostoma (Diplommatinidae) from the viewpoint of shell ontogeny. We examined the aperture ontogeny profiles that describe how aperture form and growth trajectory change along the shell ontogeny, and how the aperture ontogeny profiles relate to the observed shell forms.
