Hennig and Joan Pons-Moyà, for their significant contributions to the Quaternary studies in Mallorca. It compiles and updates a number of key topics (i.e., beaches, eolianites, paleontology, phreatic overgrowths on speleothems, etc.) and is designed to reflect the current state of knowledge of the Quaternary geology and sea-level changes in Mallorca, integrating classical descriptions with the new more detailed perspectives developed over the past decades. Therefore, this book is also a tribute to all researchers that have contributed over the years with new and more detailed information from a wide range of localities in Mallorca, improving our understanding of the Quaternary of the Western Mediterranean. At the same time, this publication is intended to be a useful "expanded" field trip guide addressed to the participants in the National Science Foundation-sponsored Workshop “Sea level changes into MIS 5: from observations to predictions”, held at the Universitat de les Illes Balears in Palma de Mallorca between April 10 to 14, 2012. The workshop aims to foster communication between an interdisciplinary group of experts in the fields of paleoceanography, Quaternary geology, glaciology, geophysics, paleoclimatology, and karst geology. The proposed workshop emphasizes interactions among researchers at various stages of their careers. Junior researchers and students will have an unique opportunity to meet leading experts on the topic of sea level change and develop potential future advisor and/or collaborator relationships. Given the present and projected future rates of global sea-level rise, it is important to identify the factors contributing to the observed sea level rise and the variability inherent in these factors. A deeper understanding of these factors will provide more accurate projections of long-term sea-level rise. Sea levels of MIS 5e, when eustatic sea levels were intermittently somewhere from 2 to 7 m higher the present, provide possible analogs for future scenarios of sea-level change. With about 200 million people living today within vulnerable coastal zones, an improved understanding of last interglacial sea level history may help in anticipating the future impacts of global sea level change. The coastal caves of Mallorca with their unique speleothem encrustations provide a source of additional sea level data (apart from marine terraces, eolianites, paleontology, etc.), and can precisely document and potentially test the elevation and timing of various sea level stands in the Western Mediterranean region. The Western Mediterranean region is appealing because it appears to be tectonically stable over the last glacial/interglacial cycle, and the encrustation mechanism is unique in that it captures past sea level positions with sub-meter resolution. The organizers of the “Sea level changes into MIS 5: from observations to predictions” workshop, acknowledge the owners, managers, and guides of Coves del Drac and Coves d’Artà for their willingness in making accessible these famous show-caves for scientific research and, last but not least, in offering the participants the opportunity to visit them during the workshop field trips. During the workshop presentations and especially in the two-day field trip, you will all realize the significance of Mallorca’s coastal caves in expanding and obtaining high-resolution Quaternary sea-level oscillation data. This is probably the most important contribution of this workshop to the future Quaternary studies on this topic. For this reason, we are indebted to the cavers of the Federació Balear d’Espeleologia who opened a promising field of research. Their dedication and continuous support is highly appreciated. This work presents results of two years collecting efforts within the project “The role of the alpine karst area in Bulgaria as reservoir of species diversity”. It summarizes distribution data of 44 terrestrial gastropods from the Bulgarian part of Alibotush Mts. Twenty-seven species are newly recorded from the Alibotush Mts., 13 were con- firmed, while 4 species, previously known from the literature, were not found. In the gastropod fauna of Alibotush Mts. predominate species from Mediterranean zoogeographic complex. A large part of them is endemic species, and this demonstrates the high conservation value of large limestone areas in respect of terrestrial gastropods. Within Ariantinae, C. obtusus stands out because of its aberrant cylindrical shell shape. Here, we present phylogenetic trees based on these five marker sequences and discuss the position of C. obtusus and phylogeographical scenarios in comparison with previously published results. Our results provide strong support for the sister-group relationship between Cylindrus and Arianta confirming previous studies and imply that the split between the two genera is quite old. The tree reveals a phylogeographical pattern of Ariantinae with a well-supported clade comprising the Balkan taxa which is the sister group to a clade with individuals from Alpine localities.

INTRODUCCIÓN Al igual que en el resto del Estado Español, la historia contemporánea del municipio de Calvià ha sido compleja, variada y llena de matices. Los marcos socioeconómicos y políticos de Mallorca y del conjunto del Estado han condicionado el devenir de este pueblo, pero a su vez, la propia idiosincrasia del municipio de Calvià, su base económica y su estructura social y política, ha otorgado a su evolución histórica un marco especialmente particular. Sin dejar de lado la evolución política del municipio, muy en consonancia con su marco geográfico de referencia, la historia contemporánea de Calvià puede dividirse en dos grandes momentos con tendencias socioeconómicas y territoriales marcadamente divergentes. Una primera fase, que podría llegar hasta mediados del siglo XX, estaría marcada por una estructura económica de tipo agrario y un estancamiento en el crecimiento de la población, con la aparición de fenómenos emigratorios importantes. La segunda fase, de gran vitalidad económica y con un gran impacto en la sociedad y en el territorio del municipio, se desarrollaría a partir de la década de los años 60 del siglo XX, y se caracterizaría por la aparición y el desarrollo del turismo de masas. Como veremos a lo largo de diferentes apartados, ello provocará, no sólo profundos cambios en la base económica del municipio, sino que también dará lugar a trasformaciones estructurales en la configuración de la población de Calvià, con la aparición de diferentes fenómenos de inmigración, y la construcción de una estructura territorial y una red urbana radicalmente distintas a las que, históricamente, habían marcado el devenir de este municipio.

References . 104 Revision der Tonnoidea (Caenogastropoda, Gastropoda) aus dem Miozän der Paratethys und paläobiogeographische Folgerungen Zusammenfassung Die im Miozän der Paratethys vertretenen Gastropoden der Überfamilie Tonnoidea werden beschrieben und diskutiert. Insgesamt können 24 Arten nachgewiesen werden. Tonnoidea weisen generell eine ungewöhnliche weite geographische und stratigraphische Verbreitung auf, wie sie bei anderen Gastropoden unbekannt ist. Dementsprechend sind die paratethyalen Arten meist auch in der mediterranen und der atlantischen Bioprovinz vertreten. Einige Arten treten zuerst im mittleren Miozän der Paratethys auf. Insgesamt dokumentiert die Verteilung der tonnoiden Gastropoden in der Parate- thys einen starken klimatischen Einfluss.

Along the way it has done important work of reforestation. On its margins there have planted 4,800 trees (pines, oaks, wild olives, tamarind, banana and mulberry) and more than 15,000 shrubs. The route passes close to the beaches of San Llorenç des Cardassar (S'Illot, Sa Coma and Cala Millor) and Son Servera (Cala Millor, Cala Bona and Costa de los Pinos), the nature reserve of Punta n'Amer, the Serra de Sant Jordi and the natural park Llevant Peninsula. Other natural areas of interest: Manacor: Mas des S'Estany beaches, Cala Anguila, creek Mendía, lime de Mallorca, S'Illot, Porto Cristo and Cala Murada.
