This subject was substituted by the author for a more traditional academic subject after a chance discussion with a speaker after a research class that was part of the Masters in Liberal Studies in American Culture program. It is in part a historical project, but it attempts to be a history that attempts to connect developments in the sport to broader themes in the study of American culture. This thesis focuses primarily on three institutions. Waterford Hills Road Racing is a club, founded in 1958 eight near Clarkston Michigan in the shadow of the capitol of the American automobile industry (The track is about two miles away from Chrysler’s headquarters). Waterford dates back almost to the beginning of the modem sport in the early nineteen fifties and in its history has reflected developments in the sport itself. Grattan Raceway in Belding Michigan is a family business.

  • Iniezioneiniezione the Newsletter of the Northwest Alfa Romeo Club
IniezioneIniezione The newsletter of the Northwest Alfa Romeo Club “Barn Find” at Alfa of Tacoma It was about a week before the Half-fast Lap last September when my friend, Steve Anderson (now a new club member) called, so excited about a “barn find” he had heard about that he couldn’t even wait for me to finish my shower. An uncle, Steve Bates, had been to his house for dinner the night before, and had told of a 1957 Alfa spider that his brother-in-law had taken to Alfa of Tacoma for repairs in 1977 and never picked up. Steve B’s brother-in-law, Phil George, had lived in Richland and acquired the car in about 1967. Steve remembers that Phil drove the car actively, and on one particular “hold on tight” ride, Phil told him that he and the Alfa “became one” when he drove. Steve had his doubts. When the engine began to show problems, Phil brought it to Alfa of Tacoma. Carlo ended up rebuilding the top and bottom ends, the front suspension, the brakes, and replaced the steering box. Carlo knew the car and said Phil had always taken good care of it, but when it came time to pick it up, he couldn’t pay for it. He stopped by often to see it, though. Phil remarried, but his new wife thought he really didn’t need that car, so there it sat, in the second bay from the window, on jack stands and under a cover. Phil died about five years ago and Lino had no idea how to contact any of the family.

At the 31st Auto e Moto d'Epoca show in Padua from 23rd to 26th October the wire wheel manufacturer Ruote Borrani showcases its range of classic wheels for cars and motorbikes. Wheels are made by hand strictly following the 8000+ original blueprints guarded in the company archives since 1923. Many of the valuable cars and motorbikes exhibited at the Padua show were fitted with Ruote Borrani as original equipment when first produced. Now that classic car values reach top heights, with HAGI © Top Index at all time high in September listing a staggering +163% growth in the last 6 years, owners find out that authentic refurbishment or replacement of their Borranis generates premium value in transactions, whilst inappropriate wheels cost precious points in Concours d'Elégance. Racing still serves to prove and inspire Alfa Romeo design, long known to be geared for both track and street. It has produced a wide range of innovative vehicles that are now hailed as classics. From the 8C 2300 (which won the 1931 Le Mans) to the Giulia GTA (taking several 1960s European Touring Car Championship titles) to the Alfa Romeo 155 V6 Ti (an Italian Superturismo series champ in the 1990s), Alfa Romeo continues to push ahead in order to proudly look back. HISTORY / 4 DRIVING FORCES For well over a century, Alfa Romeo designers and engineers have built a legendary brand by achieving remarkable symmetry: their goals of creating heightened emotions and developing innovative technology are passionately pursued in equal measure. These defining principles inspire everything from our most powerful Formula 1 entries to today’s Giulia Quadrifoglio — all clocking in world-class performance laps on racing’s most challenging tracks. The main takeaway from the unique, driver-centric design of Alfa Romeo? A relentless intensity that transforms every road — and every passenger. Quadrifoglio shown in Rosso Competizione Tri-Coat.
