Among these are the author’s oldest known ancestors: Heinrich Thede (born 1796), Jacob Aubil (born 1815), Christian Stubi (born 1774), Christian Gerber (born 1720’s), Johannes Schmutz (born 1764) and Jacob Thomas (born 1740s). Also included are small sections on the paternal grandmother of Diane (Thede) Casey, Swedish lines of Peterson and Johnson, and the maternal grand- parents of Diane (Thede) Casey, German line of Santelmann. The authors of this publication are experienced genealogists and have previously published four family histories. Robert Casey and his father, Harold Casey, pub- lished “Casey Family History” in 1980 and “Shelton, Wininger and Pace Fam- ilies” in 1988. Robert and his mother, Bernice (Brooks) Casey, published “Brooks Family History” in 1982 and “Olliff Family History” in 1992. Also as- sisting on this manuscript are the author’s wife, Diane (Thede) Casey, and her parents, Kenneth and Eleanor Thede. It is highly recommended that anyone wishing to preserve their Thede family history promptly write the authors and contribute any information in their possession. We are specially interested in copies of older photographs, family history recorded in Family Bibles, existing family history sketches, genealogical correspondence which contain a significant quantity of information, letters and diaries written prior to 1900, older legal doc- uments, census records as well as recent additions to your families. Information has been obtained from many sources and references are listed with each family sketch to aid future research on the “Thede Family History.” Much of the history of the Thede family is incomplete. Additional information is greatly appreciated and will be included in future editions of this publication. Much information received by the authors on our family history has been copied and revised several times prior to its inclusion in our publication. The authors have learned from experience that copying and interpreting usually results is less accurate information. Additionally, primary sources of valuable information as well as critical information are lost in this process. If a large amount of infor- mation is derived from another person or existing written material, then please send the name and address of the source or Xerox the existing material. The au- thors can not under emphasize the need and usefulness of original source mate- rial. There are many of our relatives who are interested in adding to our family history but do not know that this publication is being compiled. Additional names and addresses of other interested family historians are very difficult to find without your help. THEDE, AUBIL, STEEBY & GARVER FAMILIES 10-7 The numbering system used by the authors is based on the direct ancestors of the authors. The oldest known direct Thede ancestor, Heinrich Thede, was assigned the number (1). His son, John Thede, was the next generation of direct ancestors and was assigned the number (2). The number assigned to other children, other than direct ancestors of the author, were derived by taking their Thede related parent and appending the number which represents the order of birth of his sib- lings. A similar approach was used on the author’s related lines to the Thede family. The oldest Aubil ancestor was assigned the number (11), the oldest Stubi/Steeby ancestor was assigned the number (31), the oldest Gerber/Garver ancestor was assigned the number (61) and the oldest Schmutz/Smutz ancestor was assigned the number (71). Other numbers that are missing were reserved for the author’s other lines that have not been researched to date. The authors of this manuscript are fortunate to have located several books relating to their an- cestors. Some of these books are still available for sale from the following au- thors: “Thede Family History,” by Jean de Boer, 1982 (limited quantity still available for sale) Route #1, Innerkip, Ontario, Canada NOJ 1MO “The Steeby Family Tree,” by Maude (Bennett) Steeby, 1963 “Steeby Genealogy,” by Maude (Bennett) Steeby, 1982 (neither book is available for sale) 222 East Sycamore, Wayland, MI 49348 “Thomas and Related Families,” by Robert Thomas, 1983 (Covers Aubil’s and related Thomas lines, limited quantity still available for sale) 228 6th Street SW, Strasburg, Ohio 44680 10-8 INTERACTIVE FAMILY HISTORIES PEDIGREE CHART OF DIANE (THEDE) CASEY (Ancestors of paternal grandfather only) Heinrich Thede (8,1) John Thede (4,2) Caroline Schultz (9,41) Emanuel A. • THE PROBLEM of GENERATIONS As to Be Capable of Choosing Rationally the Form of Government Most Suitable for Himself
HOW THE PROBLEM STANDS AT THE MOMENT 277 forms of historical being. But if the ultimate human relationships are changed, the existence of man as we have come to understand it must cease altogether-culture, creativeness, tradition must all disappear, or must at least appear in a totally different light. Hume actually experimented with the idea of a modification of such ultimate data. Suppose, he said, the type of succession of human generations to be completely altered to resemble that of CHAPTER VII a butterfly or caterpillar, so that the older generation disappears at one stroke and the new one is born all at once. Further, suppose man to be of such a high degree of mental development THE PROBLEM OF GENERATIONS as to be capable of choosing rationally the form of government most suitable for himself. • Descendants of Peter Riedesel (1839-1891)
Compiled by Dr. Paul Riedesel, Minneapolis Descendants of Peter Riedesel (1839-1891) Generation 1 1. PETER1 RIEDESEL was born on May 05, 1839 in Leidenhofen. He died on January 25, 1891 in Thionville (Diedenhofen). He married (1) ANNA GERTRUD JACOB, daughter of Katharina Schmitt, on February 15, 1874 in Ebsdorf. She was born on July 30, 1852 in Untersimtshausen. She died on December 07, 1895 in Thionville (Diedenhofen). He married (2) KATHARINA WEIDENMÜLLER, daughter of Heinrich Weidenmüller and Margaretha Heuser, on November 23, 1862 in Ebsdorf. She was born on April 15, 1839 in Hachborn. She died on May 24, 1873 in Leidenhofen. Notes for Peter Riedesel: He was a native of Leidenhofen, but some time after the death of his first wife, he and his son moved to the area of Diedenhofen in what was then the German province of Lothringen. The latter had recently been wrested from France in the Franco-Prussian War, and would eventually be returned to France in the Treaty of Versailles that ended World War I. The town is now called Thionville and the province is Lorraine. It is reported that Peter sold his house (No. 23 1/2) to Georg Heuser in 1872 for 250 Taler. This could have been at the time he moved away (though following the birth of their youngest child). The three middle children with his second wife reported Paris as their place of birth, putting the family there from at least 1879-1883. In Germany, he was employed as a stone hewer. He would have worked at the quarry in nearby Dreihausen.

The Jones Family Pioneer Life on the Bay of Quinte, 1904; (pages 447 - 452) "Born in the County of Armagh, Ireland, in 1780, of Welsh-Irish parentage, Robert Jones, the pioneer of the Jones family in Prince Edward County, belonged to a class of farmers in Ireland, though heavily handicapped as lease- holders and often rack-rented, have always given a good account of themselves. To Robert was given as good an education as his prospects demanded and the times permitted; and he also received a thoroughly good agricultural training on the family homestead, until he was of age to begin farming on his own account. This he did, at the same time marrying Mary Bell, the daughter of a neighbouring farmer, and of the same age as himself. The farm he chose was cultivated by him for twenty years, during which time all his sons and daughters, to the number of eleven, were born. "His determination to emigrate was not prompted by failure to succeed in farming in Ireland, but rather to the need he felt of securing a much larger holding for himself and his sons, and one that he should hold on better terms.

The cause of his death was old age.3 General Notes: Possibly: SMITH, J. R., farmer, Parish, b. Oswego, N.Y., s 1808, p.o. add. Parish (probably not as there is a James R. However, the proximity to the Thurston family makes it a good chance that this is John R. Smith's father. If that's the case, then John R. Smith's father is also a John Smith, who was 45+ in 1820 so would be born before 1775. • Mcdonald, New Brunswick and Prince Edward County
Family of Daniel McDonald, New Brunswick and Prince Edward County compiled by John A. Brebner for the Friends of Sandbanks 29 March 2021 Generation One 1. Daniel/David McDonald #67333, b. c. 1755? in Scotland? . From "Pioneer Life in the Bay of Quinte", 1904 "The McDonald Family." "The ancestors of this family came originally from Scotland from which country they fled at the time of the massacre of Glencoe *; eventually their descendants located in New Brunswick in the early days of the settlement of that province. Here were born David, Henry, John, William, Daniel, George, James, Alexander, Francis, Nancy and Susan; all of whom appeared to have emigrated to Prince Edward County and to have settled in or near Hallowell directly after the War of 1812." Local lore suggests that there were fewer children, but based on the McDonald families in Hallowell Township whose ancestry suggest both a New Brunswick birthplace, as well as their common religious beliefs within the Church of Christ Disciple at West Lake, the "Pioneer Life..." extract from 1901 is more likely... This is very much a genealogy in progress. There are many "loose ends", folks that seem to have disappeared from both Ontario and the United States. One of the major problems in tracing descendants of this family is that they often used their middle names, or nick-names later in life, rather than the first names that appear on their birth certificates, or in early census data. Daniel arrived in Prince Edward County after the War of 1812 from New Brunswick with five (more likely) sons and three daughters * (see conflicting data from above source).
