The post-80s generation in Beijing 5 DOI: 10.2478/ijas-2013-0001 Sandra Valérie ConStantin UniVerSitY oF GeneVa The post-80s generation in Beijing: collective memory and generational identity Abstract This article questions the relevance of the notion of generation to describe the cohort who lives in Beijing and who was born in the 1980s and early 1990s, after the implementation of the reforms and opening-up policy in China. The analysis relies on 627 questionnaires collected in Beijing in 2010. The sample was stratified by age and sex, and, based on quotas; it was split into five age groups (18-26 year-olds, 33-41 year-olds, 48-56 year-olds, 63-71 year-olds and 78-86 year-olds). The respondents were questioned on their perception of turning points and socio-historical changes that occurred during their lifetime. After having analysed the data in a comparative perspective, we came to conclusion that the word generation is suitable to describe the young people from Beijing born in the 1980s and early 1990s not only because they do share autobiographical and collective historical memories, but also because these memories have by and large taken place between their adolescence and entry into adulthood (supporting the hypothesis of the existence of a reminiscence bump). Re- searchers agree on some aspects, such as younger individuals being better at absorbing new tech- nologies. However, given that not only those who wanted to but also those who were obliged to switched to teleworking, it appears that younger people may not be as effective at working remotely as previously thought. The relevance of our study is based on the contradictory findings of research conducted during the pandemic. With this article, we contribute to the accumulation of knowledge about the change that takes place in telework. The paper aims to examine the relationship between socio-demographic indicators and the evaluation of telework. Our study confirms that the gender and age of employees are important factors in an employee’s attitude to telecommuting. Mostly, the attitudes vary in terms of gender. At least in the case of Lithuania where the research was conducted, Millennial men, unlike other generations and significantly more than Millennial women, see personal career development problems working remotely. -

WHEN MIGHT THE TWO CULTURAL WORLDS OF SECOND GENERATION BICULTURALS COLLIDE? ABSTRACT Second generation youth often identify with two cultures (heritage and Canadian). Although these biculturals usually negotiate their lives between two cultural worlds with ease, there are situations where conflicts may arise because of an incompatibility between the norms associated with each culture. Our research has identified some key points where bicultural conflicts can occur for second generation Canadians. econd generation youth in Canada are the children of parents who immigrated to Canada from another country. Although there is a tremendous amount of diversity among individuals Swithin this second generation, they often share the feature of being bicultural. Culture can be defined by the norms and standards of a group that will delineate the appropriateness of behaviour. Bicultural individuals, therefore, have psychological access to two sets of cultural norms that may be tied to geography, ethnicity and/or religion. 15 September 2011 Economics & FI/FX Research Economic Flash Oktoberfest 2011: A somewhat different safe haven It’s that time of year again. This Saturday, at the stroke of 12 noon, the mayor of Munich will ceremoniously tap the first keg of beer and declare "O'zapft is" ("It is tapped"). The world’s largest fair will then open its doors to the public. The Oktoberfest traces its roots back to the festivities held to celebrate the marriage of Bavaria’s Crown Prince Ludwig to Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen on 12 October 1810. Since then, the Ok- toberfest has been held every year on the Theresienwiese (or Wiesn for short), named in honor of the Crown Princess – except for 24 times, when it was canceled due to epidemics and the two world wars. This year, the event is being repeated for the 178th time. Last year, the Oktoberfest bicentennial marked a new record for beer con- sumption (see chart). The temporary slump in beer sales during the finan- cial market crisis and the subsequent deep recession was therefore quickly reversed. However, the figures for the bicentennial were biased somewhat by special factors. First, the Oktoberfest was extended by one day, i.e. 17 days instead of the usual 16. Second, capacities were expanded: There were two new traditional beer tents. As a result, the number of available seats increased from roughly 105,000 by over 8,000. But even adjusted for these effects, the recovery was substantial. Hence, the capacities were well utilized. On the final weekend, access to the entire Wiesn site had to be shut off for several hours due to overcrowding.
