Lila Downs

Lila Downs, a multi-hyphenate whose talents include singer, songwriter, composer and actor, is quite simply one of the most influential artists in . With one of the world’s most singular and powerful voices, she is known for her charismatic and compelling stage presence and poignant storytelling.

Lila grew up in and , Mexico—her mother is from the indigenous group and was a cabaret singer, and her father was a Scottish- American art professor. This cross-cultural upbringing had an influence on her own compositional style. She’s at home combining genres and rhythms as diverse as Mexican and corridos, , standards, hip-hop, cumbia, and popular American music.

She is multi-lingual as well, with the ability to connect with audiences and transcend language barriers, singing in Spanish, English, and several native American languages such as Zapotec, Mixtec, , Mayan, and Purepecha.

Lila has garnered many accolades for her studio albums and numerous duets during her more than 25-year career, beginning with her 1994 debut, Ofrenda, through to her latest release, 2019’s Al Chile. She took home the Grammy Award for Best Regional Mexican Music Album in 2012 for , and has won five —including four in the Best Folk Album category.

While Lila’s most frequent collaborator is her husband, saxophonist and producer Paul Cohen—along with her longtime band La Misteriosa—her list of musical partners reads like a who’s who of contemporary music. She has worked with such diverse artists as , Caetano Veloso, Juanes, Nora Jones, Juan Gabriel, , , Soledad, Aida Cuevas, Toto La Momposina, The Chieftans, and .

Lila is also known as a passionate human rights activist, frequently focusing on social justice in the areas of immigration and women’s rights at a time when strong voices are needed more than ever. Her 2001 album Border/ (La Linea) was inspired by and dedicated to Mexican migrant workers, and in 2016 she released the song “El Demagogo”/“The Demagogue,” sung in both English and Spanish, as part of the 30 Days 30 Songs initiative.

Lila’s immense talent has carried her to some of the world’s most prestigious stages, including performances at the Obama White House, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, the Academy Awards, and the Latin Grammy Awards. Lila has also expanded her reach to Hollywood, acting in several films, including and Gringo, and appearing on the soundtracks for Bobby Z, Real Women Have Curves, Hecho en Mexico, and Tortilla Soup, among others.
