Nora La Bella
Gian-Carla Tisera: Nora la Bella September 30, 2014 7:00 PM Americas Society 680 Park Avenue New York, NY Dear friends, As Music of the Americas regulars know, Bolivia was very rich in Catholic religious music during the baroque. My first contact with Gian-Carla Tisera’s voice came years ago, in her previous musical life as a classically-trained singer in a beautiful CD of music from the missions of the east of the country. Over the past few years, Gian-Carla took an unexpected (for me) musical turn and started combining her multiple musics, literate and traditional, new and old, Bolivian and foreign, to forge a typically New York style with her own compositions and novel interpretations of songs that she loves. We are delighted to welcome her and her band of musicians and dancers to Music of the Americas and to welcome you to our hall for the 14-15 season. Thank you for joining us. Sebastian Zubieta, Music Director The MetLife Foundation Music of the Americas concert series is made possible by the generous support of Presenting Sponsor MetLife Foundation. This program is also supported, in part, by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts. In-kind support for this performance is provided by the Bolivian-American Chamber of Commerce. The Fall 2014 Music program is also supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council, and by The Amphion Foundation, Inc. Additional support for the Instituto Superior de Arte del Teatro Colón performance is provided by Alejandro Cordero. -
Lila Downs LA CANTINA “Entre Copa Y Copa...”
Lila Downs LA CANTINA “entre copa y copa...” Exploring and expressing Mexico's rich culture has been a lifelong passion for Lila Downs. La Cantina: “Entre Copa y Copa...” marks a unique turn in her career path, as she focuses intently on the rich and familiar repertoire of Mexico's beloved cancion ranchera tradition. The cancion ranchera is typically a ballad about heartache, solitude, love and longing — a song such as one would typically hear in a local cantina. It is a musical tradition quite akin to Portugal’s fado, or to the Delta blues — deeply soulful, often lamenting, always emotionally vivid. Downs and her partner, multi-instrumentalist Paul Cohen reflect, “Our new album brings out smiles and complicity from every person in the audience. After all, who doesn't like to go out to a bar, have some drinks and cry to your favorite songs?.... Well, maybe not everyone cries, but we can all remember — as we say in Spanish: ‘I'm not crying. It’s that cigarette smoke making my eyes burn....’" Special guest Flaco Jimenez, the legendary Tejano accordionist, brings his rootsy norteño sound to the mix. In the hands of Lila and her band, this historic repertoire is handled with a hip, contemporary edge that surely draws from her residency in the great melting pot of New York City in recent years — a world away from her dual upbringing in Minnesota and the Sierra Madre mountains of Oaxaca. Living in such varied environments, Downs took after her mother’s stage career by singing mariachi tunes at age 8. -

The following curriculum fails to include literally hundreds of serendipitous people-to-people encounters when we purposefully visit small towns and villages to by snacks and refreshment to talk to people, and ask questions and strike up conversations. Ironically, some of the most meaningful and enlightening people-to-people contacts are the hardest, and virtually impossible, to document. Day 1: “Anatomy of the capital of the Capital: Introducing information on the history and change of Havana, and specifically Vedado ”: architecture (residential and commercial), use patterns (park boulevard, parks, residential and commercial), public institutions (schools, hospitals (8, including cardio and oncology)), religious institutions (churches, convents and two synagogue), monuments and statues (John Lennon, socialist world leaders, military, politician, intellectuals, Jose Marti) and transportation. -

This dance, now known as “on 2” mambo, or salsa, for its relationship to the clave, is the first uniquely North American form of vernacular Latino dance on the East Coast. This paper traces the New York mambo’s develop- ment from its beginnings at the Palladium Ballroom through the salsa and hustle years and up to the present time. The current period is characterized by increasing growth, commercialization, codification, and a blending with other modern, urban dance genres such as hip-hop. Spotify | YouTube instagram.com/bacalaomen facebook.com/bacalaomen Booking: [email protected] ABOUT Bacalao Men was born in Caracas in 1999, when Pablo Estacio asked two musician friends to form a songo band. The group first featured Sebastián Araujo on drums, Aurelio Martínez on sax, and Pablo Estacio on bass and vocal. Within the first jam sessions, the musical structures and atmosphere that would give Bacalao its essence began to emerge, with its intelligent lyrics, afrolatin beats with jolts of funk, hip hop and electronic. The formation soon was enriched with the integration of DJ Hernia; Vladimir Rivero, Caracas’ legendary salsa percussionist, and Rafael Gómez, former guitarist of Lapamariposa and currently performing with Lila Downs. With its new members, and an undeniably original repertoire, Bacalao embarked on its first era of concerts in different Caracas venues and all throughout Venezuela, quickly generating a buzz about its indisputably new yet familiar sound. El Nuevo Bugalú (2005) was its second album, also produced independently. El Nuevo Bugalú concentrated on small chronicles told by song, and with it, the group expanded its sounds characterized by the use of native semantics of the city of Caracas, religion, love, and stress. From this second album came the group’s hits Malibu and El Comegente, a cheeky chronicle that relates the life of Dorángel Vargas, a cannibal who devoured over a dozen people in the 90’s.Through El Nuevo Bugalú, Bacalao was awarded Best Album of the Year, Best Song (El Comegente) and Best Production (Bacalao Men) by Venezuela’s Foundation of New Bands (Fundación Nuevas Bandas). -
El Extraño Mundo De Silvina Ocampo
El extraño mundo de Silvina Ocampo A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures of the Collage of Arts and Sciences by María Rebeca Deibel M.A University of Northern Iowa November 2012 Comittee Chair: Enrique A. Giordano, Ph.D. Abstract This dissertation brings a new approach to Silvina Ocampo studies by using the theory of uncanny and fantastic fields. It has been a great contribution the theoretical foundations of psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud The Uncanny and Irène Bessière Le récit fantastique. The main book is titled Fantasy: The Literature of Subversion by Rosemary Jackson as it integrates the notions raised by Tzvetan Todorov and Irène Bessière. Jackson's contribution has allowed me to clarify the definition of the fantastic and the uncanny to the development of this dissertation. I think the term paraxial deserves special mention because it reaffirms the fantastic not categorically defined within the real or unreal, but rather is considered as an ambiguity. Some short stories of the writer show signs of ambiguity, a characteristic of the fantastic, but this does not classify all her works within this category. I do not intend to place it within a literary genre because it’s narrative is presented in influence of various literary forms. I proved, however, that it leans more toward the uncanny rather than other narrative categories. Silvina Ocampo is an Argentina writer who seduces readers with an approach contrary to convention. -
