  • The Great War and the British Home Front Summary of the Impact (100)
UoA 29 – The Great War and the British Home Front Summary of the impact (100) With the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War approaching, there is increased national and international interest in this conflict. The ‘home front’ in Britain during that conflict is one that is relatively under-researched. At Sunderland, Smith’s research into this social context has led to her being asked to help a local museum develop teaching materials for schools and the wider community as part of preparations for the centenary events. Her research has also influenced the production of genealogy programmes on television. Underpinning research (500) Sunderland University has developed a national and international reputation as a civic university with close links with the wider community within the region. As part of this commitment to promoting a civic university, the English department at Sunderland has a strong record of research with the North East Irish Culture Network’s (NEICN) reputation growing since its establishment in 2002. The Sociolinguistics team have developed a considerable reputation for placing language in its social context, particularly in the North East, and also within the late 19th and early 20th century context that forms the core of NEICN’s literary and cultural studies. The team has made use of the North East Centre for Life Long Learning (NECLL). Although part of Sunderland University, NECLL provided a range of short courses in Newcastle upon Tyne and other venues across Tyneside and the North East of England. English staff contributed to this through the Explore subscription scheme which allowed subscribers to attend as many sessions and events as they wished.

  • TWENTIETH CENTURY DEFENCE SITES of TYNE and WEAR
ARCHAEOLOGY of the TWENTIETH CENTURY DEFENCE SITES of TYNE and WEAR An Illustrated Guide NEWCASTLE GATESHEAD NORTH TYNESIDE SOUTH TYNESIDE SUNDERLAND A GUIDE TO THE ARCHAEOLOGY OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY DEFENCE SITES OF TYNE AND WEAR by R Whaley, J Morrison and D Heslop Newcastle City Council Tyne & Wear Specialist Conservation Team 2008 1 PREFACE By Alan Rudd Over the centuries the North of England attracted a wide variety of defensive structures to counter threats from both near neighbours and Europe. This led to the development and building of a large number of defensive structures varying from the Roman Wall to the medieval castles for which Northumberland is renowned, up to the twentieth century fortifications of pillboxes and nuclear bunkers. These structures cover a wide variety of types and design, reflecting the military engineering techniques of the time. The period covered in this book is from 1900 to 2000, the Twentieth century, a period of rapidly changing military threats and hardware. We have seen in the period the advent of the plane and the tank and the wane of the military threat from close quarters, to the development of the nuclear bomb and the long-range Cruise missile. In Tyne and Wear a large number of Military structures have been built in this period, these structures began with the redevelopment of the coastal batteries on the Tyne at the start of the century. The batteries built at both Tynemouth and South Shields were at the time “state of the art” with all new guns and emplacements. The next building period came with the onset of the First World War, when some new structures were build though little remains today.

  • Sunderland City Runs Event – Road Closures – Sunday 20 June 2021 Stagecoach Services 3, 4, 10, 11, 13, 16, 20, 23, E1, E2 An
Sunderland City Runs Event – Road Closures – Sunday 20 June 2021 Stagecoach Services 3, 4, 10, 11, 13, 16, 20, 23, E1, E2 and E6 On Sunday 20 June, for the Sunderland Half Marathon and 10k events, a large number of roads across the city will be closed to all traffic. Wearmouth Bridge will itself be closed until mid-afternoon, as will a number of roads across the city centre, in Hendon and in Seaburn. Queen Alexandra Bridge will additionally also be closed to all northbound traffic, as part of its bridge maintenance works. Note, the direction of this closure on Queen Alexandra Bridge is in the opposite direction to the standard closure; this is to accommodate the exceptional demands of 20 June, and to reduce conflicting movements at the northern and southern ends of Queen Alexandra Bridge. Due to these many and varied road closures, bus services across the city will be revised or truncated until around mid-afternoon on Sunday 20 June. The revised timetables and routes for Stagecoach services 3, 4, 10, 11, 13, 16, 20, 23, E1, E2 and E6 will be as follows: Services 3 and 13 - From first bus until approximately 4:15pm, buses will operate via normal routes from Hylton Castle and Town End Farm to Southwick Fern Avenue. Buses will then temporarily observe the ‘Shelter Deck’ bus stop (near the western end of King’s Road), before diverting via Church Bank, Queen Alexandra Bridge, Pallion New Road, Trimdon Street, Silksworth Row, St.Michael’s Way, Albion Place, Green Terrace northbound, St. Michael’s Way, then normal route towards Farringdon or Doxford Park.
