Wicked continues to be the top choice of West End theatregoers having been voted Best Night Out (Evening Standard Theatre Awards 2011), Most Popular Show (Olivier Awards 2010), Best West End Show (Whatsonstage.com Awards in both 2011 and 2010), Best New Musical (Whatsonstage.com Awards 2007) and Best Family Fun (Visit London Awards 2009). Wicked has already been seen by 36 million people worldwide and grossed $2.9 billion at the Box Office. It has been recognised as “the best musical of the decade” (Entertainment Weekly), “the defining musical of the decade” (The New York Times) and “a cultural phenomenon” (Variety) and has already won over 90 major international awards. WICKED – THE STORY If you think you know the Wicked Witch of the West, think again… When Dorothy famously triumphed over the Wicked Witch, we only ever heard one side of the story. Gregory Maguire’s “outstanding novel” (The Independent), Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, ingeniously and wittily re-imagined the Land of Oz, creating a parallel universe to the familiar story written by L. Frank Baum and first published as The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in 1900.

Meyer, my mentor during more than a quarter century in Oz. Introduction Founded in 1957 by Justin G. Schiller, The International Wizard of Oz Club brings together thousands of diverse individuals interested in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and this classic’s author, L. Frank Baum. The forty-four volumes of The Baum Bugle to-date play an important rôle for the club and its members. Despite the general excellence of the journal, the lack of annual or cumulative indices, was soon recognized as a hindrance by those pursuing research related to The Wizard of Oz. The late Fred E. Otto (1925-1994) accepted the challenge of creating a Bugle index proposed by Jerry Tobias. With the assistance of Patrick Maund, Peter E. Hanff, and Karin Eads, Fred completed a first edition which included volumes 1 through 28 (1957-1984). A much improved second edition, embracing all issues through 1988, was published by Fred Otto with the assistance of Douglas G. Greene, Patrick Maund, Gregory McKean, and Peter E.

Feedback so far from teachers is that they appreciate being able to use the ‘Main Title’ from Star Wars or ‘Defying Gravity’ from Wicked to ease students into the new set works, or as a ‘respite’ from the less well-known works. However, the music’s familiarity can also present a challenge, as students resist going beyond the big tunes and into the elements of the score. This resource gives a context for both set works before analysing their key features and suggesting practical ways for communicating them in the classroom. It includes: a brief history of the genre and performance style. an overview of the composer’s work and approach. an in-depth analysis of key elements. ideas for creative responses. ‘DEFYING GRAVITY’ FROM WICKED Since its Broadway launch in 2003, Wicked has worked its way into the history books, giving Stephen Schwartz his biggest hit since Godspell (1971). It’s now one of the longest-running shows and has been seen by an estimated 30 million people. Its popularity shows no sign of abating, with the West End show still selling out and a movie release planned for 2019.

‘NOT JUST FOR GAYS ANYMORE’: MEN, MASCULINITIES AND MUSICAL THEATRE by JAMES MICHAEL LOVELOCK A thesis submitted to the University of Birmingham for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of Music School of Languages, Cultures, Art History and Music College of Arts and Law University of Birmingham September 2016 University of Birmingham Research Archive e-theses repository This unpublished thesis/dissertation is copyright of the author and/or third parties. ABSTRACT This thesis explores how the changing masculinities of the 21st century have affected how young men connect to musical theatre as a genre that has been stereotypically seen as gay. The investigation is first located in the theoretical framework of masculinities, utilising the concepts of the male sex role, hegemonic masculinities and inclusive masculinity to chart how the performance of the male gender has changed over the past century. The project then adopts an empirical approach to a group of 161 men and 25 women, establishing a methodological framework for correlating sexual orientation with attitudes towards musical theatre. There is a further honing of this methodology through the adoption of Jenifer Toksvig’s The Fairytale Moment exercise, which identifies how each participant connects to narrative through a core emotional drive.

  • November 19–20, 2020 32Nd Annual Festival of New Musicals 1
320nd NOVEMBER 19–20, 2020 32ND ANNUAL FESTIVAL OF NEW MUSICALS 1 FROM THE NATIONAL ALLIANCE FOR MUSICAL THEATRE’S PRESIDENT WELCOME TO OUR 32ND ANNUAL FESTIVAL OF NEW MUSICALS! I look forward to this journey every year: usually a physical journey to NYC to see old friends, meet new ones, and immerse myself in the exhilaration of NAMT’s Festival. This year, of course, will be different: I’ll travel to the world of the Festival while in Buffalo, but it will be just as eye-opening, poignant, enjoyable and provocative. I never know where the Festival will take me, but I know that during these two days I will feel a surprising and strong gamut of emotions. Not only will I be entertained and challenged, but I will also have perspectives and opinions reinforced one minute and completely altered the next. We’re delighted that you’re here to join us for these two days—truly just the beginning of the journey for these unique musical theatre pieces and their extraordinarily talented writers. I congratulate each of the writers who participated in this event and thank them for their creativity, intelligence, talent, and courage, which is the lifeblood of our artistic industry. We hope you’ll want to blaze a development path with them. Every year the Festival inspires many long-term relationships among writers, theatres, producers, directors and performers, and we expect this year will again initiate many partnerships, in new and varied ways. NAMT believes that the best way to encourage that ongoing development is to give our writers every possible opportunity to showcase their best work.

Did you have any special fondness of the movie "The Wizard of Oz" when you were younger that may have sparked your interest in making a musical out of "Wicked"? I think it is great that you've staked your claim on this piece of OZ history. I was just wondering if you felt a special connection with the film that prompted you to read the book and then write the musical. I can really feel passion in the music that comes when someone really has worked hard and poured their heart into something. It's a great piece of theatre and you should be proud. I love your work and am actually in rehearsals for my high school's production of "Godspell," which, might I add, is another great piece of theatre. I hope all is well with you and I hope to hear from you soon.
