Questions and Answers

What are the drop off and collection arrangements?

We will be operating a strict one-way system around the site, entering through the Flint Street entrance and exiting through the main gates on Schoolfield Road, to ensure a safe flow of parents and children. We understand that the entry and exit points may not be from the most convenient gate for you, but we want to limit contact between families on the playground. Parents must be prompt in dropping off and collecting their children.

In order to minimise the number of people on the school site, only one parent will be allowed to drop off and collect their child.

Should you have more than one child in school you will need to drop off and collect all of your children at the earliest collection time. For example, if you have a child in Year 6 and Year 2, you will need to drop off both children at 8:30 a.m.

Parents will not be permitted to wait around on the playground or outside the school gates, but are expected to drop off their child and go. Parents will not be permitted to enter their child’s classroom.

We expect parents to keep 2 metres apart at all times and ask all parents and pupils to ensure they have thoroughly washed their hands with soap and water before leaving home.

West Thurrock Academy, Registered in and Wales No. 08259069. Registered Office: West Thurrock Academy, Schoolfield Road, Grays, Essex, RM20 3HR How will classes and teaching be organised?

The school will be following a curriculum appropriate to the year group they are in. Teachers will plan supportive interventions to make up for missed learning where appropriate.

Each year group will be a bubble and not mix with other year groups. Children will be expected to remain at their allocated spaces during lessons. Lunch times and playtimes will be staggered and children will remain in the space allocated to their bubble.

Wherever possible class equipment will not be shared; however, where this is unavoidable, items will be cleaned after each single use.

Does my child need to wear school uniform?

Yes. This should be cleaned daily to reduce the risk of contamination.

Does my child need to come into school wearing a face mask?

No. The government have recommended children not to wear masks in school.

The government do not recommend the use of PPE in schools; however, some staff may wear it at times of the day, for example, when administering first-aid.

What can my child bring into school?

Children need to bring a water bottle clearly named into school, a break time healthy snack and a packed lunch if they are not having a hot dinner. Children also need to bring in their PE kit, Book Bag and coat. Children must not bring any other items into school in order to reduce the risk of contamination.

What are the arrangements for my child’s prescribed medication?

Please bring your child’s medication to school on the first day when you drop off your child. Make sure that the medication is clearly labelled with your child’s name and in a plastic wallet. Please hand it to one of the adults at the gate.

Is attendance compulsory in September?

Yes, it is compulsory. The school’s Attendance and Punctuality policy is reinstated.

What if a child in school is ill?

If any child shows signs of illness, however mild, they will be sent home to isolate for 7 days. We ask that parents do not send their child into school or come to the school if someone in

their household has symptoms of the virus or has a confirmed case of Covid-19. The school will advise on steps that need to be followed in these cases.

Will I be able to come to the school office or into the school building?

Parents will not be permitted to enter any part of the school building. Parents should telephone the school office or email with any queries or messages.

How can I help the school?

Please encourage your child to practise the hygiene habits that are required, for example social distancing, hand washing and using tissues.

Please understand that all the decisions taken are for the safety of everyone.

We very much look forward to welcoming all our families back to school.

Yours sincerely,

Susan Cook Headteacher
