Orientalism Within the Creation and Presentation of Doctor Strange
Sino-US English Teaching, May 2021, Vol. 18, No. 5, 131-135 doi:10.17265/1539-8072/2021.05.007 D DAVID PUBLISHING Orientalism Within the Creation and Presentation of Doctor Strange XU Hai-hua University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, Shanghai, China Doctor Strange has become a representation of superheroes with magic in the world of Marvel. Considering his identity as Sorcerer Supreme, there is a crucial connection between the Orient and his magic. The paper will discuss the detailed symbols of Orientalism in the process of creation and presentation of Doctor Strange respectively to figure out the change of Orientalism with the times within the texts of Doctor Strange and its existence today. Keywords: Orientalism, Doctor Strange, magic in the world of Marvel Introduction Ever since his debut in 1963, Doctor Strange has become a representation of superheroes with magic in the world of Marvel. Noticeably, a number of eastern elements have never ceased to appear in the Doctor Strange series throughout the times. Several characters are from the east, and the mysterious Asian land is also the birthplace of Doctor Strange’s magic power. Considering his identity as Sorcerer Supreme, the first and strongest sorcerer in Marvel, there must be a crucial connection between the Orient and his magic, both in the entire Marvel world, and in traditional western culture. Eastern elements under the account of westerners can be well interpreted with reference to the general concept of Orientalism. Thus, this paper aims to discuss the way the idea of Orientalism evolves with the times that is showcased within the texts of Doctor Strange. -

Avengers and Its Applicability in the Swedish EFL-Classroom
Master’s Thesis Avenging the Anthropocene Green philosophy of heroes and villains in the motion picture tetralogy The Avengers and its applicability in the Swedish EFL-classroom Author: Jens Vang Supervisor: Anne Holm Examiner: Anna Thyberg Date: Spring 2019 Subject: English Level: Advanced Course code: 4ENÄ2E 2 Abstract This essay investigates the ecological values present in antagonists and protagonists in the narrative revolving the Avengers of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The analysis concludes that biocentric ideals primarily are embodied by the main antagonist of the film series, whereas the protagonists mainly represent anthropocentric perspectives. Since there is a continuum between these two ideals some variations were found within the characters themselves, but philosophical conflicts related to the environment were also found within the group of the Avengers. Excerpts from the films of the study can thus be used to discuss and highlight complex ecological issues within the EFL-classroom. Keywords Ecocriticism, anthropocentrism, biocentrism, ecology, environmentalism, film, EFL, upper secondary school, Avengers, Marvel Cinematic Universe Thanks Throughout my studies at the Linneaus University of Vaxjo I have become acquainted with an incalculable number of teachers and peers whom I sincerely wish to thank gratefully. Doctor Strange Comics As Post-Fantasy
Evolving a Genre: Doctor Strange Comics as Post-Fantasy Jessie L. Rogers Thesis submitted to the faculty of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in English Karen Swenson, Chair Nancy A. Metz Katrina M. Powell April 15, 2019 Blacksburg, Virginia Keywords: Fantasy, Comics Studies, Postmodernism, Post-Fantasy Copyright 2019, Jessie L. Rogers Evolving a Genre: Doctor Strange Comics as Post-Fantasy Jessie L. Rogers (ABSTRACT) This thesis demonstrates that Doctor Strange comics incorporate established tropes of the fantastic canon while also incorporating postmodern techniques that modernize the genre. Strange’s debut series, Strange Tales, begins this development of stylistic changes, but it still relies heavily on standard uses of the fantastic. The 2015 series, Doctor Strange, builds on the evolution of the fantastic apparent in its predecessor while evidencing an even stronger presence of the postmodern. Such use of postmodern strategies disrupts the suspension of disbelief on which popular fantasy often relies. To show this disruption and its effects, this thesis examines Strange Tales and Doctor Strange (2015) as they relate to the fantastic cornerstones of Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings and Rowling’s Harry Potter series. It begins by defining the genre of fantasy and the tenets of postmodernism, then it combines these definitions to explain the new genre of postmodern fantasy, or post-fantasy, which Doctor Strange comics develop. To show how these comics evolve the fantasy genre through applications of postmodernism, this thesis examines their use of otherworldliness and supernaturalism, as well as their characterization and narrative strategies, examining how these facets subvert our expectations of fantasy texts. -

Eight years later, Peter Parker is drafted into the Avengers by Stark to help with an internal dispute in Berlin,[N 2] but resumes his studies at the Midtown School of Science and Technology when Stark tells him he is not yet ready to become a full Avenger. Jack Reacher: Never Go Back
[email protected] ENGLISH REVIEW #MackansFilm Title: Jack Reacher: Never Go Back Year: 2016 Genre: Action, Adventure, Crime Length: 118 min Director: Edward Zwick Actors: Tom Cruise, Cobie Smulders, Aldis Hodge 6,7/10 <iframe width="854" height="480" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/aRwrdbcAh2s" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Jack Reacher must uncover the truth behind a major government conspiracy in order to clear his name. On the run as a fugitive from the law, Reacher uncovers a potential secret from his past that could change his life forever. [email protected] ENGLISH REVIEW #MackansFilm TYPICAL NETFLIX FILM It is typical Tom Cruise movie, but not one of his best. To keep it simple, it is a mediocre movie, and the whole story seems mainly concerned to get Tom Cruise to look cool, even now in older age. Some see his attempts to keep the same physics and image that he had 10-20 years ago, as a desperate and pathetic midlife crisis. But I disagree with those critics, and I actually think his efforts are inspiring. He has always given everything in their roles, to create some kind of realism to the character and the movie itself. Just as his enthusiasm for doing his own stunts, so I see this as no more than an artistic way to sell the illusion that what we see in the film, is real. I do not think he cares about trying to stay young. He is an actor, and the majority of the characters he plays are athletic beefy males. -
Movie Review: ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’
Movie Review: ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ NEW YORK — There’s plenty of humor and action in the fast-paced sci-fi adventure “Ant-Man and the Wasp” (Disney). What’s noticeably lacking is any exposition or guidance for those not already familiar with the characters and their relationships from 2015’s “Ant-Man” and 2016’s “Captain America: Civil War.” While the film can still be enjoyed on its own, newcomers will feel somewhat left out as a result. One example of the potential confusion awaiting novices is the fact that, when we first encounter him, Scott Lang aka Ant-Man (Paul Rudd, who also co-wrote the script) is approaching the end of a two-year sentence of house arrest. That’s the consequence, we learn, at least by implication, of his activities in the latter of the two previous movies. But specifics on what exactly he did are not shared. Whatever his wrongdoing, Scott — whose alter ego, thanks to a high-tech suit, can shrink or grow at will — is now anxious to focus on serving his time and raising his young daughter, Cassie (Abby Ryder Fortson). Scott’s good resolutions are undermined, however, when his predecessor as Ant- Man, Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), and Pym’s daughter, Hope (Evangeline Lilly), aka the Wasp, draw him into their quest to rescue Hope’s mother, Janet (Michelle Pfeiffer), the original Wasp. Janet been stuck for decades in the Quantum Realm, a kind of subatomic limbo. To retrieve her, the trio will have to do battle with two principal enemies: Sonny Burch (Walton Goggins), a petty gangster out to profit from Pym’s technological breakthroughs, and Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), a victim of Pym’s past misdeeds. -

Abstract Established in 2008 with the release of Iron Man, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has become a ubiquitous transmedia sensation. Its uniquely interwoven narrative provides auspicious grounds for scholarly consideration. The franchise conscientiously presents larger-than-life superheroes as complex and incredibly emotional individuals who form profound interpersonal relationships with one another. This thesis explores Sarah Hagelin’s concept of resistant vulnerability, which she defines as a “shared human experience,” as it manifests in the substantial relationships that Steve Rogers (Captain America) cultivates throughout the Captain America narrative (11). This project focuses on Steve’s relationships with the following characters: Agent Peggy Carter, Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow), and Bucky Barnes (The Winter Soldier). -
