Iron Man/Tony Stark...... Downey Jr. Tony Stark, an extravagant billionaire genius who now uses his arms dealing for . He created a techno suit while kidnapped by terrorist, which he has further developed and evolved.

Thor...... He is the Nordic god of thunder. His home, , is found in a parallel universe where only those deemed worthy may pass. He uses his magical hammer, , as his main weapon.

The /Dr. Bruce Banner...... A renowned , Dr. Banner became The Hulk when he became exposed to gamma radiation. This causes him to turn into an emerald when he loses his temper.

Hawkeye/Clint Barton...... Clint Barton is a government who works for S.H.I.E.L.D. a.k.a. the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division; A normal man save the fact that he just so happens to be the world's best archer.

Black Widow/Natasha Rovanova...... The only woman in The Avengers team, she is a secret for S.H.I.E.L.D. who excels at and various martial arts. She is an ex­Soviet spy whose tactics have gained her international notoriety.

Nick ...... Samuel L. Jackson He is the head of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Avengers Initiative.

Agent ...... She's a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent with good intentions. She is the commander on S.H.I.E.L.D.'s own flying battleship, the .

Agent ...... Clark Gregg A S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who, unimpressed by all of the flamboyant superheroes, is the liaison between The Avengers and the various government agencies who control them. 2

Loki...... Tom Hiddleston He is 's notorious adopted brother and the central antagonist in The Avengers. He views humans as an inferior race and has vowed to take revenge on his brother after the events in the Thor film. 3 Plot Summary

S.H.I.E.L.D. Director arrives at a remote S.H.I.E.L.D. facility during an evacuation. The Tesseract, an energy of unknown potential, has activated. It opens a through space and the exiled Norse god steps through. Loki takes the Tesseract and also takes control of the minds of several S.H.I.E.L.D. personnel, including Agent Clint "" Barton and Dr. , the main researcher of the Tesseract, to aid him in his escape.

In response to the attack, Fury re­activates the Avengers Initiative. First he pulls Agent Natasha Romanoff, a.k.a. , out of an interrogation. Fury sends her to India to find and recruit Dr. Bruce Banner, a.k.a. the Hulk. At the same time Agent Phil Coulson approaches "" Tony Stark and requests that he review Dr. Selvig's research. Fury himself approaches Steve Rogers, a.k.a. , with an assignment to retrieve the Tesseract from Loki. During his exile, Loki encountered the , an alien race seeking to conquer the galaxy. In exchange for the Tesseract, the Chitauri agree to help Loki conquer Earth.

Captain America and Iron Man travel to Germany to capture Loki. Loki quickly surrenders when the two heroes arrive, and he is escorted to a S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier, a high­tech, flying aircraft carrier. However, Thor arrives and attempts to free Loki so he can reason with him on his own, but he gets into a fight with Iron Man and Captain America. Eventually, Loki is taken to the helicarrier and placed in a glass cell designed to hold the Hulk.

Suddenly, Clint Barton “Hawkeye” and Loki's possessed agents attack the helicarrier, disabling one of its engines in flight. While Stark and Rogers attempt to restart the damaged engine, Thor tries to prevent Dr. Banner from turning into the Hulk and destroying the ship from inside. While fighting Agent Romanoff hits Hawkeye over the head, releasing him from the mind control and The Avengers are able to defend the helicarries from the attackers.

Meanwhile, Loki, desperate to win, uses a device built by Dr. Selvig to open a portal to the Chitauri home world over , summoning a Chitauri invasion.

The Avengers rally in defense of . With help from the reformed Barton, Captain America and Thor evacuate civilians while Dr. Banner transforms into the Hulk and goes after Loki, beating him into submission in Tony Stark's penthouse. Romanoff makes her way, with a little help from the Chitauri, to the device that holds the portal open (conveniently located on the roof of the Stark Building) and hits Dr. Selvig over the head, freeing him of Loki's control. Dr. Selvig then reveals that Loki's staff can be used to close the portal, which The Avengers fight to do, and eventually manage to do it.

After the disaster in New York, Thor escorts Loki and the Tesseract back to Asgard, while Fury notes that the Avengers will go their separate ways until a new world­threatening emerges. 4 Some Words and Expressions that You May not Know
