Further reproduction prohibited without permission. ABSTRACT At the age of thirty-eight, the contemporary American writer Anne Tyler has an impressive publishing record. By the end of 1978, she had published seven full-length novels and forty short stories, several of which were later included in prize anthologies. An eighth novel is scheduled to appear in the spring of 1980. All seven of Miss Tyler’s novels and most of her short stories are set in the South, primarily in North Carolina, where the novelist grew up, or in Baltimore, where she has lived with her husband and two daughters since 1967. Moreover, since the publication of her first story in 1959, Miss Tyler has shown a continu­ ing interest in the intricacies of family relationships and the growth and concurrent isolation of the individual within a family setting. Re­ peatedly the novelist focuses on the ability of the individual to adjust to the confinement and isolation of family life and to continue to love in the face of marked conflict with the very people to whom he is related or with whom he has chosen to live. More than merely a vehicle for study­ ing the endurance of human beings in confining, restrictive situations, however, Miss Tyler's fiction also reveals the author's development as a writer: a maturation of both her vision and her skill in the handling of complex and frequently more elusive personalities. The novels move from the early _If Morning Ever Comes, a book which focuses on the dilemma of a single character, Ben Joe Hawkes, to Searching for Caleb, a portrait of five generations of the Peck family. In successive works, the main char­ acters are older, their life experiences broader and more comprehensively portrayed. The young law student of lf_ Morning Ever Comes, ten-year-old Simon and his cousin Joan in The Tin Can Tree, the dumpy teenager of A v Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner. Siipping-Down Life, and the passive college drop-out and heroine of The Clock Winder, Anne Tyler’s fourth novel, yield to more intriguing, mature characters: the reclusive bachelor-artist of Celestial Navigation, the impulsive and intuitive fortune teller, her mechanically-inclined husband, and her restless great uncle in Searching for Caleb, the tolerant and witty housewife of Earthly Possessions. Elkins Florida International University ABSTRACT The structure of Anne Tyler's novel, Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant is interestingly reminiscent of that of William Faulkner's As I Lay Dying; an investigation of the similarities reveals an underlying connection between the two works, a common concern with family dynamics and destinies. Both novelists examine the bonds between people, mysterious bonds beyond or beneath articulation. Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant is not, however, a pale imitation or a contemporary retelling of the Bundren novel. It is a participant in a tradition. The parallels between the two novels are suggestive rather than exact. Despite a certain sharing of Faulkner's fatalism, Tyler gives us characters a bit less passive and events a bit less inexorable. The echoes from Faulkner deepen and intensify the themes of Tyler, but in her novel, for one character at least, obsession ultimately gives way to perspective. The ending is not Faulknerian but Tyler's own; the optimism is limited but unmistakeable. Anne Tyler's latest novel, Dinner to the Home• also named Tull.2 A close look suggests that the sick Restaurant, begins with this sentence, similarities are not limited to names and surface "While Pearl Tull was dying, a funny thought appearances.     May 2020 Dear Student, You are enrolled in Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition for the coming school year. Bowling Green High School has offered this course since 1983. I thought that I would tell you a little bit about the course and what will be expected of you. Please share this letter with your parents or guardians. A.P. Literature and Composition is a year-long class that is taught on a college freshman level. This means that we will read college level texts—often from college anthologies—and we will deal with other materials generally taught in college. You should be advised that some of these texts are sophisticated and contain mature themes and/or advanced levels of difficulty. In this class we will concentrate on refining reading, writing, and critical analysis skills, as well as personal reactions to literature. A.P. Literature is not a survey course or a history of literature course so instead of studying English and world literature chronologically, we will be studying a mix of classic and contemporary pieces of fiction from all eras and from diverse cultures. This gives us an opportunity to develop more than a superficial understanding of literary works and their ideas. Writing is at the heart of this A.P. course, so you will write often in journals, in both personal and researched essays, and in creative responses. You will need to revise your writing. I have found that even good students—like you—need to refine, mature, and improve their writing skills. You will have to work diligently at revising major essays.

Librarian Cussy Mary Carter is a 19-year-old who lives in Troublesome Creek, Kentucky with her father and must contend not only with riding a mule in treacherous terrain to deliver books, but also with the discrimination she suffers because she has blue skin, the result of a rare genetic condition. Both personable and dedicated, Cussy is a sympathetic character and the hardships that she and the others suffer in rural Kentucky will keep readers engaged.

    Fluid Input Devices and Fluid Dynamics-based Human-Machine Interaction Steve Mann and Ryan Janzen Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering University of Toronto http://eyetap.org Abstract—We propose a highly expressive input device having keys that each generate an acoustic sound or similar disturbance when struck, rubbed, or hit in various ways. A separate acoustic pickup is used for each key, and these pickups are connected to a computer having an array of analog inputs. Non-binary, con- tinuous sensitivity allows a smooth (“fluid”) range of control. We describe three embodiments of the input device, one that works in each of the 3 states-of-matter: solid, liquid, and gas. These use (respectively) geophones, hydrophones, and microphones as the pickup devices. When used with liquid or gas, the device becomes a fluid- dynamic user-interface, comprising an array of fluid flows that are sensitive to touch. Sounds are produced by a Karman vortex street generated across a separate shedder bar, shedder orifice, or other sound producing device for each finger hole. Data is entered by covering the holes in various ways. This gives highly intricate Fig. 1.
