30 Milestones in the Life and Legacy of Martin Luther Jr. Mrs. , who served as Chair, Martin Luther King, Jr., Federal Holiday Commission and Founding President of the Martin Luther King, Jr., Center for Nonviolent Social Change, is quoted as saying:

“As a nation chooses its heroes and heroines, a nation interprets its history and shapes its destiny. The commemoration of the life and work of Martin Luther King, Jr. can help America realize its true destiny as the global model for democracy, economic and social justice, and as the first nonviolent society in human history.”

4. 1954 Supreme Court ruled racial segregation in public schools unconstitutional (Brown v. Board of Education) Selected as pastor for Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama.

5. 1955 Supreme Court ordered desegregation of public schools Earned Ph.D. from Boston University

22. 1968 Delivered his last speech, "I've Been to " Assassinated on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis More than 300,000 people marched with his coffin through Atlanta

23. 1977 Awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Jimmy Carter

24. 1983 Dr. King's birthday declared a federal holiday by President Ronald Reagan

25. 1985 Lebanon hosted its first M.L.K. Celebration

26. 1986 January 20, 1986 – First national Observed.

November 3, 1992 – After a coalition of citizens for an Arizona King Holiday launched successful protest and boycott campaigns, 27. 1992 the people of Arizona passed referendum establishing Martin Luther King, Jr. state holiday.

August 23, 1994 – President Clinton signed the Martin Luther King, Jr. Federal Holiday and Service Act, expanding the mission of the holiday 28. 1994 as a day of community service, interracial cooperation and youth anti-violence initiatives.

29. 2004 Awarded a Congressional Gold Medal

30. 2011 The MLK Monument on the National Mall was opened to the public.

Day 28 - Take time to listen to someone who is sad or depressed today. Day 29 - Let go of an age-old grudge that is affecting your own peace of mind today. 30 SCRIPTURE SUGGESTIONS FOR MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. SUNDAY SERVICE

1. Genesis 37:18—20 They saw him in the distance, and before he reached them, they plotted to kill him. They said to each other, “Here comes that dreamer. Now is our chance; let us kill him and throw him into one of these pits and say that a wild beast has devoured him. Then we shall see what will become of his dreams”.

2. Leviticus 19:15 Do not pervert justice; do not show partiality to the poor or favoritism to the great, but judge your neighbor fairly.

3. Deuteronomy 16:18 Appoint judges and other officials in every town that the Lord your God gives you. These men are to judge the people impartially.

4. Psalm 34:14 Turn away from evil and do good. Search for Peace and work to maintain it.

5. Psalm 82:3—4 Give justice to the weak and the orphan; maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute. Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.

6. Psalm 140:12 Lord, I know that you defend the cause of the poor and the rights of the needy.

7. Proverbs 21:3 Do what is right and just; that is more pleasing to God than sacrifice.

8. Proverbs 21:15 NIV When justice is done, it brings joy to the righteous but terror to evildoers.

9. Proverbs 28:5 Evil people do not know what justice is, but those who worship the Lord understand it well.

10. Isaiah 1:16—17 Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean; remove the evil of your doings from before my eyes; cease to do evil, learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; defend the fatherless, plead for the widow.
