2017 FXB FIELD EDUCATION INTERNSHIPS: GREECE BACKGROUND The FXB Field Education Program is offering a new internship opportunity to Harvard students. Selected applicants will work in the field of inclusion focusing on migrants and refugees. The aim of the internship is to undertake qualitative research to build community networks and facilitate dialogues locally and internationally. Greece is facing a humanitarian emergency as the number of migrants and refugees arriving on its shores had increased dramatically. Authorities and agencies on the ground are struggling to respond effectively. Over 109,000 migrants and refugees have reached Greece by sea since 2015 and the numbers are increasing. Migrants and refugees coming to Greece are coming to a country struggling with an economic crisis, as a result of which the Greek authorities are not able to expand or scale up their services to meet the demand opposed by the influx of refugees. With over 1000 new arrivals daily, and with migration figures set to rise in the coming months there is a distinct lack of capacity on the ground to respond to the current situation.

AREAS OF INTERVENTION  Child Protection  Mental health support  Shelter and essential non-food items  Food security and livelihoods  Health and nutrition  Water, sanitation, and hygiene  Education  Gender specific issues  Empowerment groups and advocacy

TASKS  Data collection using the following:  Design interview guides  Conduct interviews and facilitate focus groups  Conduct ethnographic observations  Analysis of data collected  Develop practical tools that can be used by the host organization in their work with refugees and migrants  Presentation of findings with the host organization and members of communities  Production of a report on refugee and migrant rights and inclusion

DURATION  Summer: June 1 to July 31, 2017

HOSTING SITE Save the Children worldwide helps children in 120 countries, providing support for health, education, protection, disaster relief. Save the Children in Greece is initiating a multi-sectoral response focusing on child protection, shelter and basic food and non-food items in order to meet the needs of refugees and migrants fleeing conflict in countries such as Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq. Save the children is on the ground in Lesvos, Greece, engaging in activities to provide services to

refugee children. Child friendly spaces and child protection professionals are on hand to make sure that children receive the care that thy need.

QUALIFICATIONS  Master and Doctoral candidates only  Knowledge of, and preferably practical experience with, research and evaluation methodologies  Research interest in migrant and refugee rights, child protection, health policy and advocacy

STUDENT LEARNING OBJECTIVES  Gain understanding of refugee and migrant rights  Gain knowledge about the roles and responsibilities of professionals in public health, community development and advocacy  Gain knowledge about leadership and management experience in NGOs and public services  Establish professional, local and international contacts and references useful when seeking post- university employment
