Satterthwait, Walter. Dead Horse. Hard-boiled pulp writer Raoul Whitfield was the highest paid mystery author in the country (and possibly the inspiration for Nick in Dashiell Hammett’s The Thin Man). In 1933, Whitfield married socialite Emily Davies Vanderbilt Thayer, and the pair lived the money-guzzling jazz-age life. Two years later, Emily died, apparently a suicide, though many believed she was murdered. Veteran genre writer Satterthwait imagines what he think may have happened to the real couple.
