Classics of Detective Fiction: from the 1960S to Today This Series Will
Classics of Detective Fiction II Lecturer: Stefani Nielson Classics of Detective Fiction: From the 1960s to Today This series will consider trends and innovations in detective-suspense fiction since the 1960s. Including works by the esteemed Ross Macdonald, the superstar Ian Rankin and the brash Sara Paretsky among others, the series will focus on the steady growth of "niche" genres within detective-suspense fiction since the close of WWII. A key theme will be how these new forms of detective-suspense fiction speak to the changing times. Storytelling forms we'll examine include post-Chandler American noir, Scandinavian noir, post-Golden Age British historical mystery, the humorous Canadian cozy mystery, and the 21st century female detective story. Questions we'll ask include: has the hard-boiled detective disappeared? can a whodunnit be "serious" literature? what is the gothic detective novel? whatever happened to Sherlock Holmes? does geography matter, eh? what's funny about crime? what's a nice girl like you doing in a crime like this? how does the past affect today? Join us as we discuss the conventions and transformations that keep us reading this intriguing genre. Each week we'll examine one author and a work of fiction, considering how that work expresses its author's unique voice, relates to its own time and yet remains relevant to readers today. Suggested reading schedule: Please note participants are not obligated to do any readings. All readings are available through the public library. Week Author Reading Category 1 -

A Brief History of the Hawaiian People

P. 2 1 Digit zed by Google \ PREFACE AT the request of the Board of Education, I have .fi. endeavored to write a simple and concise history of the Hawaiian people, which, it is hoped, may be useful to the teachers and higher classes in our schools. As there is, however, no book in existence that covers the whole ground, and as the earlier histories are entirely out of print, it has been deemed best to prepare not merely a school-book, but a history for the benefit of the general public. This book has been written in the intervals of a labo rious occupation, from the stand-point of a patriotic Hawaiian, for the young people of this country rather than for foreign readers. This fact will account for its local coloring, and for the prominence given to certain topics of local interest. Especial pains have been taken to supply the want of a correct account of the ancient civil polity and religion of the Hawaiian race. This history is not merely a compilation. It is based upon a careful study of the original authorities, the writer having had the use of the principal existing collections of Hawaiian manuscripts, and having examined the early archives of the government, as well as nearly all the existing materials in print. -

Lone Star Sleuths Bibliography of Texas-Based Mystery/Detective Fiction
Lone Star Sleuths Bibliography of Texas-based Mystery/Detective Fiction A Bibliography of Texas-based Mystery/Detective Fiction Be sure to check out the new anthology, Lone Star Sleuths, available from the University of Texas Press as part of its Southwestern Writers Collection Book Series. Reflecting the remarkable diversity of the state, Texas-based mysteries extend from the Guadalupe Mountains in the west to the Piney Woods of East Texas. This annotated bibliography, arranged according to different regions of the state, helps map out some reading trails for mystery fans. We sought to provide a comprehensive list of mystery authors, although not every title published by each author is included. This list is not intended to provide an exhaustive listing of each book published by each author. Instead, it is intended to simply point the Central Texas way towards further exploration by readers. East Texas This bibliography was originally compiled for an exhibit at the Southwestern Writers Collection, Texas State University, in 2003-2004. It was prepared by Steve Davis, North Texas Assistant Curator of the Southwestern Writers Collection, and by Dr. Rollo K. Newsom, Professor Emeritus at Texas State. Along with Bill Cunningham, Davis and Newsom are South Texas co-editors of Lone Star Sleuths. West Texas This bibliography is not currently being updated, but the compilers do welcome Other Texas Mysteries corrections, additions, elaborations, and other feedback. The bibliography may be updated as time permits. Please send comments to Steve Davis.
