But even more than those unexpected twists and turns, is that the present has shown up over and over and over in the past. Fast forward 44 weeks to last night -- election night. And suddenly, all I could see was the past poking its way into the present. I watched the results roll in on the newsroom screens until early into the morning. And I thought about all the elections that have come before. George H.W. Bush sitting alone in his hotel room, mourning his loss to Bill Clinton in 1992. The Chicago Tribune going to press with the wrong headline about Dewey defeating Truman in 1948.

    About blogs Just another WordPress weblog Liberated Punks Accelerate China’s Musical Evolution From Pigface and Ministry to PiL and Killing Joke, drummer Martin Atkins has pounded the skins for some very loud punks. But he didn't realize that China's underground sound would throw him into a time machine and dial it back to the '70s and '80s, when bands were pushing the envelope on conventional rock and not really caring how you felt about it. Atkins shot 80 hours of video from his 2006 trip into Asia's 21st century powerhouse, and chopped it down into the recently released documentary Sixteen Days in China . Listening Post caught up with him to talk about China's greatest bands you've never heard and more. Wired.com: How did your experiences with Ministry and your other bands match up to the scene you witnessed in China? Martin Atkins: I think time and location has more relevance, like London in 1977, New York in 1980 or maybe Chicago 1989. These were cities that had exploding scenes that I managed to be a small part of. Add to that some entrepreneurial what-the-fuck-ness, and there you go! The backdrop is different, but the immersion, the focus on just the music and attitude feels like a definite ripple from those times. It doesn't feel strategized in a careerist way. The guys in D-22, who now have a label called Maybe Mars, and their venue reminded me of the vibe of CBGB's. While I was over there, I saw the club on CNN, and that rang a bell for me.

There, he leads the transformation program to improve how the National Offender Management Service (NOMS) works with contracted partners across various sectors. Owusu was initially asked to join the MoJ to work on the 2013 'overcharging' scandal: this occupied the top of the UK political agenda and involved the discovery of overcharging by providers of home-curfew monitoring equipment and services. The disputes concluded with a settlement totaling £180m and was a watershed moment for UK government in its commercial undertakings. Prior to joining the Ministry, Owusu worked as a management consultant, having completed Humanity in Action-inspired stints at the War Crimes Chamber of Bosnia & Herzegovina, and an internship program at the International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol). Born in London, raised in Ghana and educated in America, Owusu attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated with the Senior Honour Award, before earning his Master's degree from Imperial College London. Owusu is also an award-winner with a number of solo features and exhibits under his name. My hypothesis was that changes in the music over time would mirror the socio-political trends that were simultaneously taking place. Two key components set this research apart from much of the previous literature on the subject. First, the empirical and quantitative nature of this study is relatively unique, as most previous research on this topic has been qualitative in nature.
