IHS students served more than 17,000 community service hours this year. In addition to participating in school-sponsored service activities such as Midnight Runs and Student Ambassador duties, they reached out into our communities and served as volunteers at the Special Olympics, American Cancer Society Relay for Life, Pope John Paul Rehabilitation Center, Bethel Health Care Center, Morning Glory Breakfast Program and many other worthwhile parish and community activities. Mass was celebrated on a daily basis and all-school Masses were held on a monthly basis. Each class enjoyed a day offsite in retreat and several thought-provoking assemblies were held throughout the year. IHS kicked off the school year with a BBQ to welcome our new freshmen and transfer students. The student council and classes sponsored a freshman social, as well as fall and winter dances. Throughout the year members of a variety of clubs enjoyed one another’s camaraderie while working on projects that contributed to our greater community.

IHS Traditions.indd 15 10/13/11 1:23 PM MEET THE GIRLS HEAD SOCCER COACH AND ALUMNUS NELSON MINGACHOS ’89

Did you know the girls head soccer coach Nelson Mingachos has been part of Immaculate family before he even donned a Mustang uniform? Although he attended Immaculate from 1986-1989, he really became a fellow Mustang prior to his freshmen year when he attended the Mustang Basketball Camp as a camper. A few years after graduation, he became the Freshman Basketball Coach (1995-1997), then JV Basketball Coach for the next 6 years. Since 2005, he has been Head Varsity Basketball Coach. As our Varsity Girls Soccer Head Coach since 2005, he has led the team to an impressive 7 CIAC Class S State Championships (2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010), two CIAC Class S Semi Finalist (2002 & 2007). Coach Mingachos been named the Danbury News Times “Coach of the Year” (2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009), South West Conference Coach of the Year (2008, 2009), The Connecticut Girls Soccer Association Coach of the Year (2008), NCSAA New England Coach of the Year in 2009, NCSAA National Finalist Coach of the Year in 2009, and Doc McInerney Coach of the Year Award by the Writers Alliance in 2010. He was inducted into the Immaculate Hall of Fame in 2000.

Inspirations: “I always speak to the influence my coaches had on my life. Dan Murphy, Bob Nelson and Bob Plumb are a huge part of the person I am today. They taught me integrity, patience and molded me into a respectful young man. These are values I try to instill in my players today. I have been fortunate enough to work side by side with Bob Nelson working as his JV coach, and currently working with Bob Plumb on the basketball court.”

Why Immaculate? “I tell everyone that I bleed Mustang Blue! I have had many offers to coach at other local high schools but feel it is my time to give back and cannot imagine being anywhere else. This is a great place to be.”

Coach Mingachos is married to wife Kellie. They have two daughters, Isabella and Sophia.

What Immaculate Means to Me...

“I consider myself fortunate to have graduated from Immaculate. My parents made many sacrifices to ensure I was able to attend Immaculate and I am eternally grate- ful for their love and foresight. To this day, I continue to rely on the knowledge and skills I developed while at Immaculate. Immaculate’s challenging curriculum, caring faculty and Catholic values helped me get started on the road to life-long learning. Immaculate challenged me to become a leader of character and to appreciate and prac- tice the qualities of courage, competence, commitment and candor.” LTC ANDY MORGADO ’90

IHS Traditions.indd 18 10/13/11 1:23 PM “My name is Megan Mitchell and I am an Immaculate High School 2010 graduate currently attending Emerson College for Broadcast Journalism. Immaculate High School has not only pointed me in the right direction, but started me off and guided me through this path to- wards a bright future. Because Immaculate allowed me to do so many different activities such as lacrosse, the musicals, student council, etc., I was able to jump right into the swing of things at college. The faculty and staff at Immaculate not only taught me so much in the classroom, but they also gave great access to me whenever I needed help. At Immaculate, I was always encouraged to pursue my dreams by creating videos and broadcasts for the school, which gave me experience when auditioning for television and radio shows at my school. I have also grown tremendously in my spirituality at Immaculate. The values I learned from Immaculate as well as the curriculum and spiritual life opportunities, have been a key asset to my growing relationship with God. I implement these values in everyday life which has helped me communicate effectively with others, as well as deal with any type of situation. Immaculate High School has shaped me in such a positive way and I love knowing that I will always be a part of this fantastic family.” MEGAN MITCHELL ’10, EMERSON COLLEGE

“...the best educational and spiritual decision we made was to send our three children to Immaculate High School.” — Mrs. Donna Lasco

“There are many decisions parents need to make as their child reaches each milestone. For my husband and I, the best educational and spiritu- al decision we made was to send our three children to Immaculate High School. From the moment we entered the school we felt as though we were part of an extended family, each person working side-by-side to insure our child’s success. There is continual support whether it is as simple as con- firming an early dismissal to an unsure parent or as complex as providing step-by-step guidance through the college application process including the many scholarship opportunities that may be available. Our children also experience this support from their teachers and guidance counselors. Their teachers want them to succeed and encourage them to come by before school or after school to clarify any questions they may have. In addition, they value and work hard to develop a well-rounded person. Not only are our children encouraged to join extra –curricular activities, but they are motivated and made aware of the need to give back to their community. Having three children with very different interests and talents, my husband and I found that Immaculate was able to offer activities with such variety that our children are involved year round. We also have had the opportunity to see ‘first-hand’ the excellent education that Immaculate High offers as a college preparatory school. Our oldest child, now a freshman in college, had many college doors opened to him and was offered many scholarships. His academic and social success after his first semester of college is a credit to how well Immaculate prepared him both academically and spiritually for this next milestone. As par- ents who have many decisions to make as our children grow, sending our children to Immaculate High School definitely has been one of our best decisions!” DONNA LASCO, PARENT ’10, ’12, ’14

IHS Traditions.indd 22 10/13/11 1:23 PM A Message from Brian McGovern ’89 President of the Alumni Council

Fellow Alumni, Current Students, Staff and Friends of Immaculate,

I am pleased to let you know that the Immaculate High School Alumni Council is up and running and will be a great resource for the school and its Alumni. Our primary objectives include:

• Engage the Immaculate Alumni to enhance and strengthen the Immaculate Alumni Community • Plan and coordinate Alumni events • Update and improve the accuracy of the Alumni Directory. If you would like to update your information, please contact Julie Sorcek, the school Director of Media and Communications, at [email protected] • Regularly update the information in the Alumni section of the school’s web site www.immaculatehs.org • Regular e-mails and e-bulletins throughout the year, highlighting events, both past and planned • Assistance in coordinating and getting information out regarding class reunions • Letting the Immaculate community know about good things happening; get us the information and we will post it for all to enjoy

The first Alumni Council event was a wine tasting held this summer at DiGrazia’s Vineyard in Brookfield, CT. The event was a great success with participation from many classes. We look forward to more events this year.

The Alumni Council is looking for volunteers to be the lead contact person for each graduating year. If you are interested, please contact one of the Alumni Association officers or faculty members. We have a Facebook fan page to help connect alumni with each other and Immaculate. We hope you will become a fan if you are a Facebook member.

The word is out: Immaculate is driven by a new energy and direction. We appeal to all alumni and parents of alumni, recent and far- removed, to come back to campus and catch the wave! Feel free to contact any of the Board members, we would love to hear from you.

Thank you for your support, and I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming Alumni events.

IHS Traditions.indd 27 10/13/11 1:23 PM Donor Spotlight Mr. Joseph Draper Class of 1982

BACKGROUND: I graduated from Fairfield University with a degree in Finance in 1987.

CAREER & FAMILY HIGHLIGHTS: While at Fairfield I had the chance to travel to France for a full year and became Editor-in-Chief of the campus newspaper “The Mirror” during my senior year. After graduation, I joined Salomon Brothers and stayed for 22 years as they merged into Salomon Smith Barney and then Citigroup. My responsibilities were always in trading and investing in Emerging Markets with most of my time spent in Asia. I have lived in Hong Kong or Tokyo since 1990. In 1999, I was promoted to Managing Director in charge of propriety investments for Private Equity, Real Estate and Distressed Debt in Asia for Citigroup. The unit invested in small and medium sized companies such as BMW car dealerships in China, oil exploration in Indonesia, and ski resorts in Japan. I met my wife Mieko in Tokyo. We have three wonderful children: Suzuran 3, Rikto 2 and May 1. They keep us very busy and make long airplane rides quite interesting. We live most of the year in Tokyo but spend our summer in Connecticut. We think the northeast has the best weather on the planet from June to September.

FAVORITE IHS STUDENT MEMORIES: As a student I loved going to Immaculate. You were welcome and encouraged to participate and be active. There was a sincere mutual respect of students and expectations that they would act responsibly which they did for the most part. I loved participating in sports. We had a very successful Mock Trial Club then which might be a forerunner to today’s debating teams. We were in the state tournament three years in a row and lost in the finals in 1980. We worked months and months and beat teams from prep schools and big high schools across the state. We were definitely the underdog but we had dedication and the support of some great teachers (Mr. Rinaldi and Mr. Genova) and the local attorney Dave Bennett. What a neat experience for high school students.

INSPIRATION: I left Immaculate feeling great about my friendships, what I’d learned and accomplished. It was time to go but sad to depart. The most important thing I always felt was that teachers and administrators cared; that they had a real interest in the students and their suc- cess and earnestness to teach and encourage and to forgive and forget when that was also called for.

SUPPORTING IHS: I want other young people to have as much fun and feel the satisfaction that comes with accomplishment and handling responsibility. I want them to have great friendships, to be in a positive and healthy environment that cares about them as people. It left me with confidence, a work ethic and humble appreciation of how much others had done for me.

IHS Traditions.indd 29 10/13/11 1:23 PM Scholarships

The gift of education is one of the greatest and most enduring gifts that can be given. We are extremely grate- ful to our benefactors for their overwhelming generosity. There are many parishes, trusts, and individuals who provide tuition assistance, some of whom are highlighted below.

A longtime supporter, Isabelle Farrington’s generous donation to Faith in the Future has been providing funding for merit-based academic scholarships.

George Landegger provides $6,500.00 annual scholarships for six St. Peter/Sacred Heart students who attend Im- maculate High School. TheDr. Ian Smith Scholarships are merit- and need-based partial scholarships awarded to incoming IHS freshmen and graduating seniors. Dana Smith, Ian’s twin brother, came to the 2011 Baccalaureate celebration to present the scholarship award.

David R. Couch Education Foundation Scholarship bears the name of its benefactor who taught at Immaculate High School for 35 years. Over the past three years, the David R. Couch Education Foundation has provided fund- ing for over 45 half-tuition needs-based scholarships at Immaculate High School.

On behalf of the students who were given tuition assis- tance awards, we thank all of our donors for providing Angel Aid and scholarships. Your gifts made it possible for more students to attend immaculate High School. Thank you for giving the gift of educa- tion…a gift that lasts a lifetime.

The family of Ben Bisbano hosts an annual golf tournament. Proceeds from the tournament provide funding for the Ben Bisbano scholarships which are awarded to an incoming freshman and a graduating senior.

Many of our parishes provide IHS spiritual support as well as financial support through annual collections. Above, Monsignor Weiss celebrates Mass with IHS students from St. Rose parish. 30

IHS Traditions.indd 30 10/13/11 1:23 PM Thank you to our Donors for making a difference in the lives of Immaculate High School Students.
