Le Antichita di Ercolano Ercoanese. This academy was founded in 1755 by edict of Charles III, king of the Two at Herculaneum. Lavishly illustrated and imperially sized, the Antichita di Ercolano were intended only for private circulation. The individual volumes, published by the royal press, were issued separately and were not sold but presented to deserving visitors and to courtiers. Volumes were also sent as diplomatic gifts to foreign courts. The years 1738 to 1765 marked the heroic period of excavations at Hercuaneum, some removal of the objects found were meant to provide an unparalleled art collection as part of Charles III’s intention to raise the cultural position of Naples. -

The World on Stone
The World on Stone Shapero RARE BOOKS The World on Stone Nineteenth-century lithograph view books 32 Saint George Street London W1S 2EA +44 (0)20 7493 0876 [email protected] www.shapero.com INTRODUCTION Lithography, a technique of printing on stone, which originated at the end of the eighteenth century, enabled an easier and less costly transfer of an artist’s drawings into printed form than had hitherto been possible. It also lent itself to capturing the fluidity and sense of the moment that is the essence of a sketch. Amongst the artists who took advantage of this development were those indefatigable travellers who ventured across the globe recording beautiful and striking topographical views, as well as the costume and manners of peoples in far-flung corners of the world. Some of these artists were military officers recording various campaigns, others were travelling under the patronage of the wealthy back home. This catalogue includes the work of some of the finest of the artists: Lear, Lewis, Prout, Roberts and Wilkie. It also contains two works by Girault de Prangey, a pioneer of the daguerreotype, who worked up his sketches from his photographic images. The subjects include the Pacific, Australia, New Zealand, the West Indies, United States, South America, India, Russia, and the Levant. We hope you will find something to interest you amongst these magnificent publications. ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL STRETCHES OF THE RIVER THAMES 1. ALFRED, HENRY J. Views on the Thames.
