The sea flows in to the Japan Foundation The Japan Foundation, Los Angeles presents its newest exhibition, “Gyotaku: Impressions of the Sea,” featuring the artwork of Dwight Hwang, running through Feb. 28. Using sumi ink, washi paper and the days catch, “gyotaku” – which translates to fish stone rubbing – is the traditional method of printing fish in Japan. Originally, fishermen used gyotaku as a way of documenting their catches, but since then it has become an art form of its own. While strictly adopting the traditional tech- nique and materials, Hwang’ artwork also gives new life to each printed fish. The subjects he takes on range from king salmon to giant octopus and spiny lobster. “My many years in Japan have taught me many things.
