A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT Dick Pippen [email protected]

Greetings Orchid Lovers—Wow!! Give him a pair of (special) pliers and some wire from Home Depot and Jim Longwell will show you some really neat tips and tricks for your orchids. This is what we were treated to at our November monthly meeting. Thanks Jim, great job! Ah yes, November also means that it is time for many of our seasonal members to reappear. It was good to see you again. Welcome back!! November also means that it is time for our Official Annual Members Meeting during which we hold the election of the Board of Directors for the coming year. The report on the election and the slate of Officers and Board members for 2020 appears elsewhere in this newsletter. I want to thank our 2019 Board of Directors for all their efforts and good work, and I look forward to working with our “new” Board of Directors during 2020. Most importantly, I want to thank all of you, the members of our Society, for your faith in your BOD. With your help we will do our best to make the Naples Orchid Society better and stronger. What was it that Barry Manilow always wanted to bring back—“that lonesome feeling.” Well, we don’t want to bring back a lonesome feeling but apparently a number of our newer members have been feeling lonesome—especially when it comes to competing with some of our more experienced exhibitors on the monthly table. So, with that cheesy introduction, I want to tell you that we are bringing back the Novice Table. Some of you will recall that we used to have the Novice Table, but it fell into disuse and we needed the space for more and other orchids. The Novice Table is essentially for first time exhibitors, you can exhibit your on a separate table, and they will be voted on separately from the regular plant table exhibits. We are in the final stages of perfecting the “rules and regulations” and we will have the information available and start this in January. Speaking of next year—just a gentle reminder that our Annual Orchid Show will be the last weekend in February the 23-24. In preparation for the show our January and February monthly meetings will be devoted to workshops on creating containers, flower arrangements, filling out the green tags and how to compete with your friends for ribbons and awards. It is hard to believe that 2019 is almost over, just a month to go—but a good month—December. Not only because of the holidays but most importantly because on the 5th of December we have our Annual Holiday Potluck-Party. I am looking forward to seeing all of you there for our end-of-the-year celebration. Oh, and by the way, bring lots of good things to eat!! Until then keep your orchids happy. Dick P.S. What’s blooming in my collection these days— Barbara Kirch, a cross between Guarianthe aurantiaca and Guarianthe bowringiana, two very well known species. I got this at our sale of George Gallipeau’s orchids in June 2013. Nice little flowers. Took five years for the plant to bloom, but it was worth the wait. Used to be a , but now a . . .

NOVEMBER--FROM AOS “GROWING ORCHIDS” MONTH-BY-MONTH CHECKLIST by Robert M. Scully Jr.

• Groom each Phalaenopsis spike. Use a fresh, clean stake. Avoid excess plant movement while buds are developing or the buds may blast (wither.) Be advised that high humidity in a closed house can also lead to flower spotting caused by Botrytis; provide supplementary air circulation using even a small fan just to avoid still air. • Nobile-type dendrobiums may show some swollen nodes on their leafless pseudobulbs. By month’s end, flowers can appear because the buds develop rapidly. • Some of the mottled-leaved Pathiopedilum species – Pathiopedilum fairrieanum and Pathiopedilum sukhakulii – bloom now. Keep their potting medium moist and avoid getting water in the pouch. • Ludisia discolor (syn. Haemaria discolor) will begin to develop inflorescences soon. Clean the foliage now, before the inflorescences grow, to maximize the beauty of the decorative foliage.

More Orchid Terms from AOS • Clavate – club shaped • Cochleate – formed like a spiral shell • Pedicel – a stem carrying a single flower • Resupinate – rotated to bring lip lowermost • Tetralocular – four-chambered

An Orchid Vignette—A Ray of Sunshine from a Pot of Gold Contributed by Dick Pippen

Blc. Malworth produces a gorgeous rich yellow flower about six inches across. A specimen plant viewed from a distance is spectacular. Jade Orchids has such a plant and during the years I volunteered there I admired Malworth every year it bloomed. Blc. Malworth is a cross between Cattleya Charlesworthii (1900) and Blc. Malvern. The cross was created by Jones and Scully when they were in Miami and registered by them in 1963. It has earned 14 AOS and international awards and has been used as a parent in 179 crosses. Potinara Wattana Gold produces a smaller, bright orange flower. It is a cross between Cattlianthe (nee Slc.) Kauai Starbright X Blc. Buttercup. The hybrid was created by Wattana Saengsagwan, of Bangkok, Thailand and registered by him in 1986. Saengsagwan only registered a total of three orchids, all in the late 1980s. Wattana Gold has not earned any awards but has been used as a parent in seven crosses. The photo of Wattana Gold (left) is borrowed from OrchidWiz. Enough about these two plants. What I really want to talk about is a hybrid between these two. I volunteered at Jade Orchids for several years and repotted numerous divisions of Blc. Malworth x Pot. Wattana Gold. I always thought it was a “pretty flower,” but too small for my taste at the time. Over time my taste changed, and I decided to get a division of this cross. So, I did, in October 2015. I potted the bareroot division in a 6” plastic pot in a bark mix. In 2016 it produced one flower, then in 2019 it produced a spike of three flowers (photo right here). Well, I am glad I got the plant because it produces a very rich yellow- gold colored flower that is about four inches across. What is even more interesting is that, when I checked OrchidWiz I discovered that the cross has been named!! It is called Potinara Sky of Sunshine. I really like that name, very clever, especially if you live in Hawaii as does Jeff Newman. Apparently the cross was made originally by Jeff Newman, Newman Orchids of Hawaii, and only registered by him in 2017. This is an old cross so it took him a while to find time to register it. Being so new, it has yet to earn any awards or be used as a parent in any crosses. Give it time. I think that if you asked, Jade Orchids probably still have some of these plants around and they would be happy to sell them to you.

WHAT IS THAT FUNNY IMAGE OF AN ORCHID AT THE BOTTOM OF THE HOME PAGE OF THE NAPLES ORCHID SOCIETY’S WEBSITE? It used to be yellow and now it’s white and it doesn’t pop out like it used to. But what does it mean? The 1% for Orchid Conservation and logo belong to the Orchid Conservation Coalition and it means that our orchid society has consistently committed to budget at least 1% of our annual budget for orchid conservation. No, we don’t donate that amount to the Coalition, but the OCC just wants our board to agree to spend at least that amount on our local orchid conservation activities. And that’s what we do through our Intern Program. But we also do it by having our annual show and by talking about and demonstrating the Ghost Orchid-gami and other native Southwest orchids. When NOS buys the Ghost Orchid-gami from the North American Orchid Conservation Center, that’s supporting orchid conservation. Several times a year we invite local presenters to talk about local wild orchids at our monthly meetings and that also contributes toward that greater than 1% for orchid conservation. So that logo means that our society is actively supporting orchid conservation in many ways. I’m proud of that and hope you are too. Find out more about this subject by Googling orchid conservation. If you are lucky like me, you might also find that the US Fish and Wildlife Service has about a 23 page report on orchid conservation in the Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge. It was written a while ago by one of Dr. Zettler’s students at Illinois College. Couldn’t get the web address, but you can find it if you look.

Go to smile.amazon.com, it’s the same company, same prices, same account and same everything, except Amazon will let you name a non-profit organization and donate 0.5% to it. NOS has already been registered and linked, but you will need to go to this website and name us as the organization you have chosen for the donation to go to. Remember to go to smile.amazon.com to order using your same account login and password for your Amazon account. Bookmark it so you will have a reminder. And THANKS for supporting your Society!

Clyde Butcher’s monumental photographs celebrate the beauty of the natural landscape. The exquisite beauty and depth of his work draw the viewer into a relationship with nature. In the tradition of the nineteenth-century Hudson River School painters, Clyde composes his works at pristine and untarnished locations across the United States and world, creating arresting compositions that distinctly mark him as the foremost landscape photographer in America today. His photography transcends political boundaries, challenging us to work together to protect natural places across the globe.

Although Butcher will always be identified with the Everglades, he is deeply committed to recording precious landscapes throughout the world. The beauty and importance of Butcher’s photography quickly earned widespread recognition resulting in museum exhibits in the United States, an exhibit at the National Gallery of Art in Prague celebrating the new millennium, and a request by the United Nations to photograph the mountains of Cuba to celebrate The Year of the Mountains.
