But by the end of that century, Lombards coming from Northern Italy had conquered most of the peninsula, with Byzantium retaining only Calabria and Sicily. From the middle of the 9th century, the Aghlabid Dynasty of Ifrîquya (the original name of Eastern Maghreb) raided Sicily to take possession of the island. A new Byzantine offensive at the end of the century took back most of the lost territories in Apulia and Calabria and established Bari as the new provincial capital. Lombard territories further north were broken down between three cities led by princes: Capua, Salerno, and Benevento. Further east, Italian duchies of Naples, Amalfi, and Gaeta tried to keep their autonomy through successive alliances with the various regional powers to try and maintain their commercial interests. Ethnic struggles in Sicily between Arabs and Berbers on the one side, and various dynasties on the other side, led to power fragmentation: The island is divided between four rival military factions at the beginning of the 11th century. Beyond its natural boundaries, Southern Italy had to cope with two external powers which were looking to expel Byzantium from what they considered was part of their area of influence: the Papacy and the Holy Roman Empire. -

The T term ‘flagging’ is normally used to describe a series of discourse phenomena occurring in the environment of a switch. In spite of a large literature on code- switching, not much is known about flagging, aside from the general assumption that it has signalling value and may draw attention to the switch (Poplack, 1988). The present study aims to offer a more eclectic understanding of flagging, by looking at the phenomenon from both a structural and an interpretive perspective. -

Murgatroyd Pindar Pythian I Abstract This article concerns the ancient Greek lyric poet Pindar (approximately 518 to 438 B.C.), specifically his first Pythian Ode, and my primary purpose is to supply a new translation of the poem (together with résumé and running commentary for illumination and elaboration), thereby introducing Pindar, the nature of his composition and certain features of his style to the non-specialist. In my transla tion, which is based on the Greek text of Snell & Maehler (1984), I aim above all at accuracy, purity and clarity, and I try to convey to the reader a real idea of the feel and texture of the poem by means of a version which is faithful to the spirit and not just the letter of the Greek. In the essay I provide a résumé, explain the background to the piece, discuss its implications and focus, and treat its major poetic features, such as diction, metre, sound, imagery and structure. New York University Spring 2016 CORE-UA 762 EXPRESSIVE CULTURES VIVA VERDI: MUSIC, LITERATURE, AND THE ARTS IN ITALY FROM THE RISORGIMENTO TO FASCISM TUESDAY, THURSDAY 2-3:15 Silver 520 Professor Thomas Ertman This course explores the rich artistic live of Italy between the defeat of Napoleon in 1814 and the consolidation of the fascists in power in the 1920’s. During this time the Italian states first experiences a cultural and political “resurgence” (the Risorgimento) and then, in 1861, united to form a single nation, the new Kingdom of Italy. Although the country entered World War I on the side of the Allies and hence belonged to the victors in that conflict, it fell into a severe crisis after the war’s end that culminated in the appointment of Benito Mussolini as prime minister in October 1922. Italy during the course of this century was above all the home of opera, and we will explore both the economic side of the “opera industry” and the most important works of the peninsula’s greatest composers of the day: Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, Puccini and above all Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901), the most dominant artistic figure in 19th century Italy. We will follow Verdi’s stylistic development from the “galley years” of the 1840’s through the late masterpieces as well as examine the impact of Italian politics on his operas. The readings for the course will be drawn from the great works of literature of and about 19th and 20th century Italy, beginning with the Frenchman Henri Beyle (Stendhal)’s The Charterhouse of Parma (1839), an unmatched portrayal of love and politics during the early Risorgimento, and Giuseppe di Lampedusa’s The Leopard, a novelistic treatment of Italian unification as experienced by a great southern aristocrat. -

The article reflects on the contexts in which populist and far right politics are taking hold in Italy and in the European Union (EU), with the LN used to illustrate this dynamic. The EU is shaping national politics in new and unexpected ways. The article concludes that the LN is seizing the opportunity to recast itself in Italy by adopting a national anti-euro, anti-austerity, anti-EU project at the same time that populist parties in other member states of the EU are capitalising on deepening societal insecurity and growing opposition to the EU, the euro, immigration and EU-imposed austerity. Introduction The Lega Nord (LN) – which translates as the Northern League – is Italy’s far-right anti-immigration, traditionally anti-southern party, and it is currently undergoing a major transformation. Under its new leader Matteo Salvini, the LN has softened its anti-southern rhetoric, toughened its stance on European integration and the euro, and established strong ties with other far right populist parties in Europe.
