N.W WASHINGTON. D.C. 20008 April 4, 2011. Meera Shankar Ambassador of India The ‘maximum lNDlA’ festival hosted by the John F. Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts in cooperation with the Indian Council of Cultural Relations and the Embassy from March 1-20, 2011 was a resounding success. As a co-sponsor of the festival, the Embassy was proud to be associated with ‘maximum lNDIA’. A festival of this magnitude to present India’s arts and culture in the U.S. was held after a gap of twenty five years. Our American friends were able to see and experience the rich diversity of art and culture from different parts of India under one roof — Indian dance, music, theatre, crafts, cuisine, literature and cinema. The milling crowds and sold out performances were a testimony to the tremendous interest and goodwill that Indian culture enjoys in the United States. ‘maximum INDlA’ also served as a unique opportunity for the people of India and the United States to rejoice in the steadily strengthening partnership between our two great democracies. I would like to congratulate Chairman David Rubenstein, President Michael Kaiser, Vice-President Alicia Adams and their entire team at the Kennedy Centre for their flawless execution of this large-scale project.

  • Béla Fleck, Zakir Hussain & Edgar Meyer
Jim McGuire BÉLA FLECK, ZAKIR HUSSAIN & EDGAR MEYER With Rakesh Chaurasia Béla Fleck Banjo Zakir Hussain Tabla Edgar Meyer Double Bass Rakesh Chaurasia Bansuri PROGRAM There will be an intermission. Sunday, November 11 @ 7 PM Zellerbach Theatre 18/19 SEASON 45 PROGRAM NOTES There’s a bit of the sorcerer in Béla Fleck (banjo), Zakir Hussain (tabla), Edgar Meyer (double bass) and their special guest, Rakesh Chaurasia (bansuri – Indian flute). Most musicians hope at most for proficiency in their chosen form, but these gentlemen move from bluegrass to Western classical to Indian classical to jazz, transmuting genres into something uniquely their own as though they’d gotten hold of the alchemist’s tools that legendarily changed lead into gold. In any case, it’s music that transcends description; ineffable, indefinable and very beautiful. The story begins around 1980 when Meyer’s friends Sam Bush and John Cowan told him about a guy they thought he’d enjoy playing with, Béla Fleck. “We first played together in Aspen, just busking, but we were pretty close pretty early. The thing we had in common was that both of us were completely comfortable talking about music 24/7 – playing, instruments, technology, the machinations of human beings involved, and any part of music” says Meyer. They played even more. “As players,” he adds, “we were at a formative stage, so to some degree, we were shaped by each other. Béla’s inventive, he cares about the details, and he’s willing to put rhythm above other things, to prioritize it.” And rhythm led to the next step.

My frst and foremost thanks are to the greatest parents in the world, who have sacrifced more than they have had at every stage for me in order for me to live my dream, for being the strongest support system one could ever ask for.
