Foreign companies explore investment opportunities in Iran’s mining sector A considerable number of European and Asian company representatives, among them a large economic delegation of NUMOV member companies, are currently investigating possible investments in Iran’s mining sector, Iranian Deputy Industry Minister H.E. Mehdi Karbasian announced on 11th December. Making the remarks during the 2nd Iran’s Mines and Mining Industries Summit (IMIS 2016) in , H.E. Karbasian, who is also the Head of Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization (IMIDRO), underscored that foreign investors should regard Iran not only as a country with 80-million people market but a country with access to the region’s 400 million people market. The two-day IMIS 2016, held at IRIB International Conference Center by IMIDRO, focused on Iran’s mines and mining industries role in the country’s economy, the government’s incentives to develop mining activities for economic growth, applying compatible finance strategies for Iran’s mines and mining industries development projects and introducing new technologies in mining industry.

Iran Aseman to buy Airbus Jets Iran Aseman Airlines has made an agreement with Airbus for the acquisition of 7 airplanes. The first jets are scheduled to be delivered by the end of May 2017. Iran Aseman is the third largest airline of the Islamic Republic and serves national as well as international destinations. Currently the airline has 35 aircrafts with an average age of 35 years.

Iranian steel exports to rise by 50% Iran’s exports of crude steel and related products are forecasted to rise by 50 percent in the current Iranian calendar year, which ends on March 20th 2017. Steel exports amounted to 4.1 million tons in the past Iranian calendar year, National Iranian Steel Company Managing Director Abdolmajid Sharifi said, adding that the figure is anticipated to reach 6 million tons in the current year. He also said Iran’s annual crude steel exports is projected to hit 15 million tons in 2025. Sharifi further announced that the country’s crude steel output is foreseen to reach 18 million tons by the end of 2016. According to the World Steel Association (WSA), Iran produced 13.210 million tons of crude steel in the first nine months of 2016, with 8% rise from 12.231 million tons in the same period last year. As a major steel producer in the region, Iran boosted its steel mills across the country in recent years, as central and southwestern Khuzestan provinces remain the major steel producers.

Iran Air and Boeing reach USD 16.6bn deal The Airline of the Islamic Republic of Iran () signed an USD16.6bn deal to buy 80 passenger planes from U.S. aircraft maker Boeing, IRNA quoted Farhad Parvaresh, Managing Director of the Iranian flag carrier on 11th December. The deal, signeded in the presence of Iran’s Transport Minister H.E. Abbas Akhoundi, includes the purchase of 50 narrow-bodied 737 planes and 30 long-range 777s. The aircrafts will be delivered over 10 years. The concluded contract between Iran Air and Boeing should be regarded as the first step taken to renovate Iran’s air fleet and the renewal procedure will speed up in future via finalizing other deals such as the one to purchase 100 Airbus aircrafts and also the contract to buy 20 ATR planes.

Austrian companies eager to participate in Iran’s energy projects Representatives of Austria’s OMV and some other leading energy companies of the country in the meeting of Iran-Austria Joint Energy Committee in Tehran on Saturday expressed their willingness to participate in Iran’s energy projects. The meeting was also attended by representatives from National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC), National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC), Iran’s National Petrochemical Company (NPC), and National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company (NIORDC), as well as Iranian Energy Ministry and Iran’s Research Institute of Petroleum Industry. The Austrian representatives said they are eager to cooperate with Iran in renewable energy sector and offer training services in this field. An OMV representative also announced his company’s readiness for development of Band-e-Karkheh oil field in Iran’s southwestern province of Khuzestan.

Switzerland calls for stronger co-op with Iranian SMEs Former Swiss ambassador to Iran, Livia Leu Agosti, has voiced her country’s willingness for boosting economic cooperation between Iranian and Swiss small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). She made the remarks in a meeting with the Chairman of Iran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture, Gholam- Hossein Shafei in Tehran on 12th December. Agosti who is the delegate of Switzerland’s Federal Council for Trade Agreements and Head of the Bilateral Economic Relations Division at the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs in the country’s Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research, noted that even during the west imposed sanctions the two countries did not cut the ties and Switzerland sent certain commodities like medicine and food products to Iran. In the meeting, Shafei for his part stressed the need for development of economic ties and removing the banking obstacles between the two countries.
