  • Middle Triassic Evolution of the Northern Peri-Tethys Area As Influenced by Early Opening of the Tethys Ocean
Annates Societatis Geologorum Poloniae (2000), vol. 70: 1-48. MIDDLE TRIASSIC EVOLUTION OF THE NORTHERN PERI-TETHYS AREA AS INFLUENCED BY EARLY OPENING OF THE TETHYS OCEAN Joachim SZULC Institute o f Geological Sciences, Jagiellonian University, Oleandry Str. 2a, 30-063 Cracow, Poland, E-mail: szulc@ing. uj. edu.pl Szulc, J., 2000. Middle Triassic evolution of the northern Peri-Tethys area as influenced by early opening of the Tethys Ocean. Ann. Soc. Geol. Polon., 70: 1-48. Abstract: During Middle Triassic times, the Germanic or northern Peri-Tethys Basin pertained to the western Tethys Ocean. The basin was closed from the north and open toward the Tethys by tectonically controlled depressions (gates). The gates were opened in different times. The marine incursions broke first (as early as in late Scythian time) through the eastern gates and from the Polish Basin advanced gradually to the west. Semiclosed disposition of the basin resulted in its distinctive environmental diversification. Open marine environments developed along the southeastern margins which should be regarded as an integrate part of the Tethys Ocean rather than the epicontinental sea. Northward and westward from the Silesian and Carpathian domains the environments became more restricted. This resulted in significant facies diachronity between the western and eastern parts of the basin. As indicated by the faunal diversity, facies variability and geochemical properties of the sediments, during almost entire Anisian time the open marine sedimentation dominated in the eastern part while the western part displayed restricted circulation, typical for the semi-closed, evaporitic basin. The circulation reversed in Ladinian time when the westward shift of the tethyan spreading center gave rise to opening of the western gate.

Sedimentary Geology 186 (2006) 187–211 www.elsevier.com/locate/sedgeo Lower Triassic sequence stratigraphy of the western part of the Germanic Basin (west of Black Forest): Fluvial system evolution through time and space Sylvie Bourquin a,*, Samuel Peron a, Marc Durand b a Ge´osciences Rennes, UMR 6118, Univ. Rennes 1, 35042 Rennes cedex, France b 47 rue de Lavaux, 54520 Laxou, France Received 30 September 2004; received in revised form 21 October 2005; accepted 10 November 2005 Abstract The aim of this paper is to analyse the fluvial evolution of the Lower Triassic in the western part of the Germanic Basin through time and space, as well as the impact of the geodynamic and climatic setting on the preservation of fluvial deposits. The Lower Triassic crops out only in the Vosges Massif and the Black Forest, so well-log studies are required to realise sequence stratigraphy correlations and establish comparisons with others parts of the Germanic Basin. In a first step, we use well-log data analyses to characterise the electrofacies associations in the Triassic and then define the well-log signatures of each formation. In a second step, the characterisation and recognition of genetic sequences and their stacking pattern allow us to define seven minor cycles integrated into two major cycles. Finally, the quantification of the lithologies at different stages of basin evolution leads to the reconstruction of paleoenvironmental maps to illustrate facies evolution through space and time. A comparison with cycles defined in the Germanic Basin allows us to propose correlations of the Lower Triassic on either side of the Rhine Graben and leads to a discussion of the evolution of fluvial systems through time and space.

NORWEGIAN JOURNAL OF GEOLOGY Keuper (Late Triassic) sediments in Germany 193 Keuper (Late Triassic) sediments in Germany – indicators of rapid uplift of Caledonian rocks in southern Norway Josef Paul, Klaus Wemmer and Florian Wetzel Paul, J., Wemmer, K. & Wetzel, F. 2009: Keuper (Late Triassic) sediments in Germany – indicators of rapid uplift of Caledonian rocks in southern Norway. Norwegian Journal of Geology, vol. 89, pp 193-202, Trondheim 2009, ISSN 029-196X. K/Ar ages of detrital Keuper micas in the Central European Basin provide new information about the provenance of siliciclastic sediments. All sam- ples of the Erfurt Formation (Lower Keuper) and the Stuttgart Formation (Middle Keuper) indicate Caledonian (445 - 388 Ma) ages. These sedi- ments originate from the Caledonides of southern Norway. The older Fennoscandian Shield and the Russian Platform did not supply any material. In combination with zircon fission track data, we show that uplift of the Caledonides of southern Norway accelerated dramatically during the Car- nian, most likely as a result of rifting of the Viking Graben. This push of Scandinavian-derived sediments ceased in the Upper Keuper (Rhaetian). Instead of Scandinavian sediments, micas of Panafrican age were transported from southeast Poland and Slovakia into the Central European Basin. Only micas in the vicinity of the south German Vindelician High and the Bohemian Block have Variscan ages. J. Paul, K. Wemmer, F. Wetzel: Geowiss. A careful recognition of uncon- formities and sedimentary indications of clearly arid climate provide powerful tools for correlation within non-marine successions that are devoid of any biostratigraphic markers, at least on the scale of the West European Plate.

Magnetic polarity of Upper Triassic sediments of the Germanic Basin in Poland. Annales Societatis Geologorum Poloniae, 85: 663–674. Abstract: Palaeomagnetic results are presented for 205 samples of cores from the Ksi¹¿ Wielkopolski IG-2, WoŸniki K1 and Patoka 1 wells, drilled in the Polish part of Germanic Basin. The magnetic polarity stratigraphy is based on the inclination of the characteristic remanent magnetization, isolated in 60% of the total samples and found to be in general agreement with the expected Late Triassic inclination at the sampling sites. A total of 22 magnetozones from the integration of the three records correspond to about 25% of the published polarity zones for the Upper Triassic sediments that were combined in the worldwide composite polarity-time scale. The magne- tic polarity pattern, defined for the Schilfsanstein, fits very well with the one defined in the Tethys area for the upper part of the Julian sub-stage.

The facies of the Lower and Middle Buntsandstein fluctuate between fluvial sandstones and lacustrine deposits, pointing to an extended basin with very low morphological gradients. Compared with the deposits in the central Germanic Basin (Poland, Northern Germany), enhanced sand content, occurrence of pebbles, and predominance of fluvial deposits indicate a more marginal position of the Thuringian Buntsandstein in the southeastern part of the Thuringian Basin, although no alluvial fans can be recognized. Only a few investigations deal with the provenance of the sandstones of the Buntsandstein. The distribution of facies belts points to an extended source area in the south comprising the Moldanubian (Bohemian) Massif.

The succession, divided into three Muschelkalk units, was studied in the Alt Palància area. In this area, both the lower and upper Muschelkalk consist of two main types of sub-units, those made up of carbonate and those of carbonate-marl alternation. The marked similarity observed between the evaporite units of the middle Muschelkalk and the Keuper

  • Middle Triassic Ammonoids from Silesia, Poland
Middle Triassic ammonoids from Silesia, Poland ANDRZEJ KAIM and RoBERT NmoŹwBDZKI Kaim, A. & NiedŹwiedzki, R. 1999. Middle Tiiassic ammonoids from Silesia, Poland. - Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 44, I, 93-115. Adescription of new ammonoid specimens (Acrochordiceras aff.damesi,cf . Acrochordi- ceras sp. indet., DiscopĘchites cf. dux, ?Paraceratites sp., cf. Balatonites sp. indet., Beneckeia buchi) from the Lower Muschelkalk (Anisian, Middle Tńassic) of Silesia (southern Poland) is presented. The detailed stratigraphic position of the new finds is given. The description is supplemented with a list of all species of ammonoids found hitherto in Silesia, which was a southern part of the Germanic Basin during the Anisian. Beneckeia and Noetlingites were typical of epicontinental seas and usually appeared in the early part of fransgressions. Other ammonoids entered from the Tethys into the epicontinental sea of the Germanic Basin during the maxima of fransgressions. Some of them (balatonitids, paraceratitids, bulogitids, Discoptychites and probably Acrochord- iceras) were successful colonizers which established their own populations in the Ger- manic Basin and evolved towards morphologies typical of epicontinental seas. Other (Beyrichites sp., Paraceratites binodosus, and'Trachyceras' sp.) are regarded as un- successful immigrants or empĘ shells drifted post-mortem from the Tethys.
